I definitely picture Matt Reason in 411, but the origins have to be much earlier, right?

Story here from late-80s Venice Beach skaters seems likely to be true.

Always assumed it was Hartsel first, but that's probably because he was the most known of the bunch. But if Jesse Martinez says it was Chris Cook, then I'll believe it.

Crazy to think that someone backed up into a pole in Venice in the late 80s, probably were very bummed, and totally unaware they changed skateboarding.

Does this also mean the first pole jam ever done involved a nose grab? Interesting.

True - he was there.

totally unaware they changed skateboarding

The Venice guys where absolutely aware and confident they have invented and changed the game called skateboarding.

Correct. That person is an unsung hero of skateboarding. I mean, it would have happened eventually. Poles get bent everywhere, but who knows how longer it would have been until the first.

You are right - didn’t got it.

But every skateable pole jam I bend myself with the
intension to skate it, always had to help to make it happen.

I was definitely thinking SMA dudes.

I kinda saw someone do one up and on to on Jason Philips’ home made wedge rampsummer 1988 at 38 broughton road.

He had a very skinny pipe leaning up the back of the ramp.

I can’t remember when I first saw a real pole jam. I don’t remember my first one. I remember my last one pole jam is my favorite trick.

Lol we used to call em pole jellies. It’s just like riding up a tight ramp or quarterpipe. There’s a reason they call em jams, go fast, stay centered and commit. It’s really all in the confidence. I haven’t done em in years but I’ve done all kind, round, square, steep, mellow, long, short, and it’s always just about staying confident, centered, and jamming through it.

Steep pole> mellow pole. Don't need to go that fast, just medium speed. Board hits pole, guide it up with front foot, pump up with back foot, suck up legs now you're in the air over the pole like you Ollied it, land.  I think of it less like I'm grinding the pole like a rail and more like I'm jumping over it while guiding the board up the rail with my feet
