Trucks size for tweener decks

For those who prefer the in between deck widths (7.63",7.88", 8.13", 8.38"), are you sizing your trucks up or down?

For example, I'm riding an 8.38 at the moment with 8.5" axles, but I'm wondering if I would appreciate sizing down to an 8.25" axle instead.

Yes, its splitting hairs but that's what Slap is for right? Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Was actually just having this conversation with a mate while skating the curb yesterday. I skate the dlx 8.28 (8.25) with 5.6 ventures but wouldn't mind going up to an 8.38-8.4. I personally would keep the 5.6 trucks as I find next size up truck a little too heavy, If found it a little to magic carpety I'd just add a few more speed washers on to push the wheels out a little more. The way is see it go with a smaller truck as you can always push it out a little more.

Grew up in the limited sizes years so I just go Indy 129, thunder 145 for anything less than 8. 139/147 for 8-8.25 (but almost never skate this size range) and 149s for 8.3 all the way up to 9. (Altho that may just be because I don't like how heavy 159,169 indys are and haven't tried the thunders that wide.)

It can often come down to what you like to skate, or even how you like to skate.


Example 1 (simple dudes who skate):

I am more into transition and ramp, more so than street stuff, so wider trucks work better for me on everything, usually 149s or 5.8" with three washers on the inside of each wheel on 8.38 boards.

A friend who is way more into street, specifically tech rails, ledges, flips, is definitely happier on not so wide trucks, usually 144s or 5.6" with one washer on either side of the wheel on 8.38 boards.


Example 2 (established pro skaters):

Peter Hewitt, vert and big bowl skater, 8.38 with 159s on it.

Andrew Reynolds, street tech, always narrow trucks on wider boards.

Yea this basically. If you kinda skate everything and cant decide, just figure out which one you like more esthetically. Wheels slightly tucked or wheels slightly poked. Slightly tucked works better for flips, and slightly poked gives more room for grinds. But Ishod skates 8in trucks on an 8.3 and rips transistion, and Taylor Nawrocki (idk how to spell) has been said to skate 8.5 in trucks on an 8in board and does plenty of flips. So there are exceptions to all of this.

I ride 8.38 and was on 8.25 trucks forever and glad I switched. The smallest thing I ride is the 8.25 DLX, which measures 8.38. More room to grind, more stable, better pinch, basically no downsides.

I know a lot of skaters that are decently tech all seem to be on 149 and up. Reynolds also came up in an era of narrow and tight trucks and really doesn't seem to like change. I will say that scooping tricks are slightly slower, but for me that's a good thing.

44s or 144s for everything from 8-8.38" works great for me.

Typically a little wider truck to line the wheels up with the deck.

I cram as much board as I can into my trucks….ie. 144’s on an 8.125….139 with washers is the other option…I just like having more truck….

I ride two set ups, 8.38" Manderson and 8.5" Polar or DLX

For the 8.38" I'm running Ace AF1 44's and they work pretty nice with the size. Hanger is a little small for my liking but nothing that makes me not want to skate my set up.

On the 8.5" I'm running 55's.

My preference is flush, but for those inbetweener sizes I usually do a size down rather than have axles sticking out. Seems to work better for flip tricks for me.

If I got a 8.625" I'd run my 55's and so on. My homie runs 169's on his 8.5" so seems like everyone's got a personal preference. Just got to figure out what works for you
