The Beanie Thread
« on: October 05, 2022, 07:53:23 AM »
Fall is among us Pals.

It was 49 degrees in the morning on my way to the bus stop. I was looking for beanies online and vast majority of them were identically made. I'm looking for suggestions for thick warm head wear that will hopefully fit over my small afro to cover my ears.

So whats your recommended head warmth solution?

Carhartt for when it’s cold. Any cheap gas station beanie for when it’s cool out. I shave my head so no hair means a beanie may get  pulled out on a cool or chilly day.

bricks and wood makes a nice quality heavy knit beanie. Super thick and warm. Anderson Paak rocks them. I'd say they're worth it at retail price, but you can usually get them on sale

also Noah makes good beanies

When my hair is long I usually wear an Atlas beanie of mine with a super loose fit because I put it through the washer and dryer incorrectly. The lack of constriction is undesirable with short hair but holds my long hair together perfectly with a nice level of airflow. I hate my hair getting in my face while I skate so it's perfect for hot days when I want to keep my hair controlled but also not overheat. I have to figure out exactly what I did to stretch this one out so I can do it again with another one when this one is lost or is otherwise not worth wearing. When I have short hair I usually wear caps, I'll go with a beanie if I'm feeling particularly cold.

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

Every time I go to Peru I buy 4-5 fisherman beanies made of Alpaca. Soft, warm, thinner than wool, all of them together cost about 1/2 the price of a skate beanie.

I too shave the dome, and I’ll wear a beanie 3/4 of the year.

Brixton heist beanie on the cheap is good, otherwise I’d look at Poler or Roark

Same ones here. I grab them at the Army surplus store for like $8 when I’m up in Chico.

I gotta wear straight wool beanies. Anything acrylic, like the carhart beanies now makes my head break out. Shit sucks. But wool never smells bad, son that's a plus

if you are purchasing Wool, you should be purchasing 100% Merino Wool, much smaller fibers, comfier, less itchy , moisture wicking, and insulating when its damp.

Acrylic also outgasses for a long time and is almost certainly linked to an increase chance of cancer. Also you will flush thousands of bits of microplastics into the ocean with every wash. Organic fibers forever.

This, or cashmere-merino blend is the way to go.

I bought a possum wool cap from a market in Hobart, Tasmania and it has been absolutely great. The ultralight backpacking company Z Pack makes an excellent possum/merino blend beanie that’s pretty cheap. I also recommend their socks - some of the best I’ve ever owned, though not great for skating.

Finding good beanies isn’t easy at all. I like a watch cap type of a beanie when it’s not too cold to keep my hair from getting in the way and to absorb the sweat when I’m skating. Having my hair a lot longer on the sides now make it so that most beanies won’t stay on that well. I’ve had to get rid of over half of my beanies. To make things simpler I’m gonna get my hair cut.

As for acrylic or wool, I sweat like a crazy and find acrylic better cuz they’re so easy to wash. I also have sensitive skin and wool beanies can start irritating my forehead. Maybe merino wool or alpaca would be better but it’s not easy to find a basic watch cap that I can fold as I like made of those materials around here at least. Found one from alpaca but that costs 60€ which is a bit outrageous and is out of stock anyway.

When it’s actually cold I’ll use all sorts of different beanies which cover the ears. Those don’t seem that hard to come by here in Finland. I don’t skate outside when it’s so cold that I’d need to cover my ears so how one would perform when skating isn’t important to me.

Lol at the Zpacks link. Is ultralight gonna be the next big trend in skating? Brands that should have a skate team…

I love my Dime beanie. Dime always has dope beanies in their drops. Looks sick, fits nice, and keeps my head warm enough. No matter what temp, if I’m skating, I’m sweating so I rotate my beanies and wash them regularly. Love my quartersnacks beanie too.

It shouldn’t be terribly surprising that a bunch of hyperactive 30 and 40-somethings have evolved interests outside of skating. I’ve been eyeing an Arc Air or Arc Haul for the past few years, but can never bring myself to pull the trigger.
