I set them up today but have to wait for a dry day to take them around town and to a park to give them the test I want to do, but once I've ridden them a bit I'll come back to write up my thoughts.

After a couple more months messing around with wheels I feel like I can come back to this post just on the off chance anyone needs yet another opinion on these wheels.

Long story short I ended up buying Spitfire f4 conical fulls to satisfy my desire for a faster hard wheel.

The x99s are a good wheel but did not feel different enough from a normal hard wheel to make it worth skating full time. They are just a bit stickier than I wanted, not at all like an actual soft wheel, just stickier than a hard wheel, while also being pretty rattley on rough ground.
I wanted a wheel that would be my perfect all-arounder, that I could skate from my house to the spot or park and do all the tricks I wanted there. I live in the northwest and the ground is pretty crusty and I live in an area with lots of bricks so it was a must that the skate around my neighborhood be tolerable, and I just wasn't satisfied. For that skating I don't think I can beat Dragons.
Skating at the park is definitely a bit better than with the Dragons, I'm sliding a bit further, tailslides feel a bit better. For dusty parks it definitely wins over your standard hard wheel, I'm not sliding out by accident on the x99s.

So I switched to formula 4 conical fulls as my standard park setup just to have something reliable and comfortable with good speed and slide, and I'll probably just keep switching back to the dragons if I have to make a trip across town or I know I'll skate some crust.

I was hoping they would be the perfect middle ground but they aren't quite there so I'll be sticking to the two sets of wheels for now.

The one place I prefer the x99s to either is actually indoors though. By hours the majority of my time on a board is indoors these days, I teach skating as my job and I'm mostly indoors for that, and the surfaces are always kinda dusty. For that specifically I can see myself keeping the x99s on my board for days at a time. Whether I actually do that just depends on if I want to go to the trouble to switch my wheels, because both the Dragons and the Spitfires would also do fine, I lose some slide with the dragons and some control with the spitfires, but both are tolerable indoors so its mostly a question of whether or not I want to go through the hassle of switching.

They might be!
But now I'm already two sets of wheels deep and I don't feel ready to buy another for a while. Maybe I'll get to try someone's set up someday and it will change my life...

I’m curious to see a picture of the chunking.
[close]

Same.

I'm guessing a bunk set, trolling or ollies into a trash metal edge with jaggies/shrapnel all over it, as I don't recall anyone complaining about chunking for any of the dragons/x9s.

My 93s/97s dragons and x99s have no chunks, ollies, slappies and heavy abuse.

Can we get some pics my dude?
[close]

Yes I will. I need to learn how to post photos. Thanks. I’ll be back. Moving day/weekend so I got sidetracked.

I haven’t been on here for a minute. Just thought I’d circle back here and state my conclusions regarding chunking dragons and x-formulas: My poor form on crooks got better and better and the wheels stopped chunking out so bad. It still happens from time-to-time, mainly on sharp steel grinding surfaces. If it starts chunking and I don't rotate, the chunks get bad and just peel away.

So, mostly user error. However, i only run x-99 or dragon 93. No more 97s

Thanks for the input guys. I missed slap.

Setup some X99s after riding the X97 for months and they are noticably harder especially over cracks, felt like the original 103a STF but slightly more forgiving - everything the original Easy Street were supposed to be. Only spend an hour messing around, no stick on slides and my joints chattering on Bones wheels is a welcome reintroduction.

my knee is fried and my ollie is trash so I set out to become a slappy guy yesterday.  Pushed around on my STF's in an asphalt parking lot and it wasn't rad....

not sure if I try 99X as full timers, piece together another set up and get 97's.

Ok

skating newer parks, and parking garages, I just didn't like the noise of the 97's that my friend had when I rode his board around.  it's funny how I ride those race reds cranked to the point where my board feels dead....love it, but my initial impressions of skating dragons and the x's are not great.  It's definitely subjective.....

oh no. you are completely correct the sound kinda sucks.
well. it’s different. and i’m finally in this window of tolerance for a different skate experience. whole time, up until now, i’ve just wanted to mob shit nollie flips, and kind of spazz out in a parking lot with the ever dwindling bag of flip tricks.
i’m just now enjoying pushing around for distance, cruising and not worrying about how much an ollie hurts.
the sound of f4 99s, feels correct.

the x97s and dragons are quiet and kinda weird, sorta bouncy. haven’t tried either at a skatepark. they work well on the crap asphalt i skate on. and are less jarring to my old skeleton.

the biggest thing for me is how well the dragons and x97s roll over pebbles, cracks and debris that used to send me flying. It has been an absolute lifesaver for me in the streets.

Was just skating to the local today through some rough asphalt thinking the saaaaame thing.

Then at the park they rolled fast.

Of course… can’t make them chirp and bark as easily and freely as F4 or SPF’s… but… meh.
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

Sharing my experience of x99 wheels. Been riding them exclusively for the past few months at outdoor parks and street. They're smooth and take some of the impact out of skating streets and okay at parks. Itypially use either F4 99s or 101s. At parks, I find they're grip and slide unreliable...inconsistent. E.g., at two outdoor parks one quite grippy the other on the slick side, I've found myself sliding out at odd times and at other times not sliding like I'd thought I would. At the the slicker park they would collect laid down bmx rubber quickly and become sketchy slippery, mind you I've typically been skating over lunch time and it's been hot (I'm in Oz). At the grippier park, I found they couldn't handle a bit of dust without sliding unreliably. I've since jumped back on F4 99 and don't have the same problems at these parks and could skate without being so cautious. Will stick with harder wheels in outdoor parks but will keep using x99s in the street. I haven't had any problems with sticking on curbs, ledges or tranny.

I think we’re in for another Bones v. Spitfire with the F493a’s out now.

I hear even the 97a’s are getting reformulated?

Personally, I can’t wait to have spits again… or maybe it’s just boredom.
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

The Spitfire 97as are getting reformulated?

I hope so, they felt like a very average 97a, kinda dead and damp. Not impressed at all. I like the X97a way more, but since i’m not pinching metal on my friends with them, they work for me, especially at the older parks with shitty ground.

We just got a new park built, so i’m back on SPF in there.

Been on F4 99a classics and tablets for a while now, but since spitfire wont make the radial slims anymore for whatever fucking reason i think ill try the x formulas.

Which bones shape is most similar to the radial slim or like a slightly more rounded tablet? I skate a lot more park than street these days so probably better to go with the x99 over the x97?

V2 is the closest to a radial slim, but it doesn't come in x-formula.

As others noted (and specifically for park) x99 > x97

V1 is a more 'rounded' tablet/standard wheel shape.

Good stuff, thanks fellas. Ima hit the shop tomorrow, looks like they have both a V5 and a V1 in stock so ill check em both out. I thought id have some issues with flip tricks when i went to the tablets from the classics but didnt notice much of a difference. Do Prefer the slightly better lockability of a more square wheel tho.

No get x97. Better in more places. Rolls fast in smooth concrete, too.

If you want a hard wheel; why not just get a hard wheel?

X97.

(Though, there seems to be more x99 out there now… the people have spoken I guess.)
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

I mean i dont really want a super hard wheel. Arent the stf 103s the harder ones? X99 seems right in the middle but again i havent ridden bones in many years.

the 99X's will feel softer, but faster than your 99a classics....97x's will feel even softer than that.....so that's why I'm saying the 99's are the ticket and why/how I finally subscribed to the new formulas....

The wheels sound different which I thought would affect skating flat but I got used to it.  I just think the 97's or anything lower in the bones formula would be a tougher transition for you.

Looks like some of the X99 formula wheels are available for purchase on the Bones site.
[close]

Grabbed a set plus 15 bucks worth of other stuff I didn't need to "save" myself 7 bucks on shipping cause I'm an adult with priorities
[close]

Way to play the angles! What size/shape?

Being in Canada, not going to pay for them twice with shipping and duties, so I guess patience shall be my virtue...
[close]

US shops should get them next week I'm guessing...CN soon after prolly.
[close]

Oh good, I'll have at least a week to obsessively agonize over a 2mm sizing decision.
[close]

This had me snorting coffee. I can’t figure out how to give someone +reps, but when I do you’re on my list.
I’ll probably do the same until I decide to get 56 v6.
But then I’d want to get 54s. And then the same in x99s.
[close]

Haha, thanks man, like Mr. Brimson mentioned I think you need 1k posts.

Definitely copping the X99's. I really like the 97's but I'm an anal retentive kook and don't really like how "rubbery" they sound. Dragons even moreso. The "clack" and bark of hard wheels makes me happy.

I skate 90% park, and of that probably 80% transition, so was debating between 54mm or 56mm V6. Just noticed the 55 V5's and I think that's gonna be the move. Skating 56mm F4 Conical full's on an orange eagle with 169's, so dropping a bit of weight should help my ledge game. What there is of it.

My X97's are 54's, plus they have so much more sidecut than the F4's, it's really noticable how much lighter they are. Wheel madness!

how are the x99’s?

Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

Has anyone done a (reformulated)F4 97 vs x97 comparison yet?

….after all I was craving dragon 93’s/f4 93’s in a proper street shape (not too thin, not stupid fat) kind of decided after waiting it out will prob just stick and replace my workmanlike but actually fine 97 CF’s when time comes…. got too many cruiserish setups already and rocks only work on smooth crete parks so…
