I don’t think you both enjoy the reputation of being particularly smart
[close]

If I have that reputation, it’s flattering I suppose,  but this is skateboarding … the currency in this world is “cool,” not “smart”. So sometimes it’s useless in a practical sense and it impresses no one.

I’m proud of my education, degrees, accomplishments and even my IQ (which comes with the caveat/counter productivity of Autism … making things very challenging at times). I did so shit in school my whole life until grad school, which I aced because it was hyper focused on writing and found my niche. But I don’t particularly try to write or speak like I’m wearing all of the above on my sleeve. Skateboarding isn't the context for that in my opinion. Even me being on Slap … it’s never been because I feel elite, its because I like interacting with skaters and regular people regarding my work and I am ok spending the time to sort out misconceptions.

I always admired the simplicity and accessibility of writers like Hemingway. Salinger, Steinbeck, etc. for that very reason. I’m far more impressed with understated geniuses and virtuosos than flamboyant/peacocking ones. I don’t need a stack of thesauruses around me to write a fucking video review or share my dumb little opinion in a “thinkpiece” with no checks and balances/quality control because no editor will even look it over, you know? Writers need editors. It’s critical to the final product.

Also, I’d much prefer everyone interpret and enjoy the part how they want and then discuss it at the spot or in the DMs or whatever. Just like no one needs to be told how beautiful Dylan was 12 years after the world already figured that out. Or that you can simply figure it out by looking at him. “Verso” is a “concept” part? Cool. Heard that already and realized by watching it. That doesn’t mean the entire community needs to turn into Socrates for a week.

What’s the point of reading shit you already know or could have thought of by yourself? Time is the most valuable currency MY audience has. So I do the best I can to respect that. Personally I read to learn or be moved or have perceptions shifted or be entertained. Reading a bunch of super obvious drivel does none of that for me.

Are you my audience who treats me with respect?

I can’t speak to why you personally allow me to squander your time … that’s on you. Weird huh?

As far as why I’m here and doing what I’m doing … again … you certainly don’t seem to genuinely care so no need for me to explain.

Ya’ll squander way more time here than I do … maybe explain why? For one … I wanted to contribute my personal relevant take and bits from the book to make this Beachy/Dylan discussion about a chapter I was in more exciting.

I think you just like to hear yourself talk.

I don’t hear what I write on this forum. Its inaudible. But now that I think of it I can turn on accessibility settings and hear the phone read my posts out loud to me in that speedy female voice … that might be rad.

It’s more of an Alien V Predator situation: Who ever wins, we lose.

I haven't read this thread, saw multiple paragraphs from and to no one, didn't seem worth it. I did read the book though, it was good. I think the chapter on Dylan captures a lot of the sentiment around the guy at the time, not to mention the way the attention on him went from absolute clowning, for some justifiable reasons, to adulation and mimicry (hello Elijah). A little flowery, but again, not off base from the majority of the writing around Dylan when he died.

The book is a series of essays about skateboarding, which could have been lame. Writing about skateboarding is hard. It's not though, in part because it also follows a tumultuous patch in his marriage, brought on in part because of Beachy's relationship to skateboarding. It makes it particularly interesting to us older folks who have a partner that doesn't exactly get the fact that skateboarding can be a competing relationship. It makes the case that the best way to write about skateboarding is to encompass it within a life, as opposed to writing about it in a vacuum. Walker Ryan's book does a decent job of that as well.

Anyway, please proceed being mean to each other on the internet. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in on the subject line.

we all know he was trying to do "barbarian days: skateboarding" as has been mentioning here.  the problem with all forms of media that tries to capture skateboarding outside (but sometime inside as well) a skateboard mag gets puffed up by it's own self-seriousness and self-importance (if that isn't redundant) and need to make skateboarding "a thing" that exists outside of itself.

Just looking at that wall of paragraphs and reply after reply is giving me a headache, I can’t imagine what trying to read all of that and then trying to find some sort of interest in what they’re arguing about would do to me if  just to looking at it is hurting my head.
