Seeing a few of y’all mention that you are closeted about your skateboarding 2023 is pretty shocking.  Do you ever plan on living your truth, like will you come out at 60 and leave your family to crash on the floor at a skate house?   How many of you are skateboarding Peter’s, denying that you know the savior (skateboarding)?

I have my own "rules" about it. Anyone who actually knows me knows I skate and have for 20 years so that's fine. I don't just come out and say it if it doesn't relate to the convo with people I don't know but I'm def not embarrassed by being a skateboarder or anything.
What I do NOT do tho is talk about all the little detail shit that we all discuss on here with regular people who don't skate. Trust me they don't want to hear it.

Why would you? I couldn't give a rats arse what other people think. I had woman tell me "you've got a lot of skateboards" yeah well I work full time and have no kids so I can do what I like.
I never talk about skating with non skaters as they don't give a shit about this dope curb I found etc.

No.  We all routinely listen to other adults unsolicitedly ramble on about the round of golf they had, the work they did on their car, their thoughts on an NFL game, or whatever other hobby they care about.  Don’t see why it should be embarrassing to talk about your own interests in return.  If it’s not weird for a 30 or 40-something-year-old to spend hours a week golfing or playing in an adult basketball league or whatever, it shouldn’t be unacceptable for someone that age to enjoy skateboarding and be proud of it.  Normalize that.

Skateboarding was a lot of my personality and I hyperfixated on it for many years. But most of the shit I talk about with other people have to do with my hobbies, so it’s just how I am. I’m not closeted, not ashamed about being a skateboarder. Most people will show me clips of stuff they found and it makes me happy that they talk to me about it.

No, and none of my friends or acquaintances hide their rock climbing, soccer leagues, BJJ, whatever. I mean it's definitely not the first thing I bring up about myself, but it's no secret. I cannot imagine that anyone cares, and anyone who would care is probably a jackass.

Once again, some people tend to think that others are thinking about them more often than they actually are. The truth is no one of these relative strangers cares that about you in the first place, much less about your hobbies.

Hell no. But like others have said, I don't go above and beyond to announce it to any and all within ear shot.

Live your life, be yourself. Time is too short to worry about what everyone thinks of you.

No. I live in San Diego. Political candidates often run ads where they’re at the beach in wetsuits. I’m pretty sure in my lifetime I’ll see one holding a skateboard.

Yes whenever I watch skateboarding I make sure to have a few porn videos playing as well.

That way I can Alt+Tab to a porn site as soon as another adult walks in so I don't make a fool of myself.

Skateboarding fucking sucks and if you are smart you will realize it's all a pyramid scheme ran by Tony Hawk and his bullshit NFT and Draft kings bullshit and get the fuck out while you still can walk.

Too bad Tony fucked his leg up and didn't have the sense to take a break and the universe done broke that boy off.

Fuck you dude I'm glad you got smoked, cause you are nothing but a fake and I hope you are happy that you are the reason skateboarding is dying a slow and painful death.

I've been thinking about this for a few hours. I literally don't own any clothes besides band shirts/hoodies than skate shit. Well snowboarding jacket/trousers/boots. Not that any non skater knows pass port, polar etc.

If I’m talking to my coworkers about my weekend, sometimes I’ll say something like i hung out, skated with friends and leave it at that. I specifically don’t mention that i skate street because that could bring up some uncomfortable conversations about what’s “legal”

I wake up every Monday and send clips of park bangers to everyone on my work Microsoft Teams.

After this I drink some limited edition NADC coffee brewed by Neen himself as I do shoulder flys with my Caliber Trucks.

Once I arrive at the office, I show of my new New Balance Numerics (and I show them that NB has a skate line, how forward thinking!)

I ensue that my actual skate shoes are worn on casual friday so they know I got that flick. I make sure to pair these with my Polar Big Boys so they know im hip.

On my lunchbreak I watch Epicly Latered videos on my phone  in the cafeteria with no headphones so they can learn Ed Templetons adolescence.

My mousepad is a footprint insole and I keep a small bowling ball to show off the technology to my coworkers.

I may be a project manager but I do keep a shoelace belt on my Brooks Brother's Chinos so keep things quirky.

When they show me pictures of Brayden playing Soccer, I show clips of Trae the Tank and show them my goals for my offspring (once I find a lady who likes FA and Hockey Aesthetics of course)

Then I make sure to make a cute Board Meeting joke every quarter.

Doing all of this is helping to normalize skateboarding in the millennial Corporate world.

no, i live in an efficiency by myself and work in middle management like you, loser

Eventually you run out of excuses for calling out on Mondays or being on crutches once or ten times a year.

The only adults I’m hiding my skating from is the fucking cops when I’m riding someplace illegal.
Everyone else seems fine with the old dude & his pastime.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me.  You think you got me?

I guess do I hide it?  If they asked me point blank I wouldn’t deny it….but tons of people in my life don’t know (mostly work) and it’s pretty easy for it not to come up…..just like lots of people who I skate with don’t know about other important shit in my life….we’re busy getting rad ok?

How about this one as a reference point…..do your skater friends know you’re here?  Do you hide it?

I hooped my complete before i went inside to serve 1-3. But it turns out they already had skateboards in there (Rikers Island adolescent side in the late 80s). C-74, adolescents ollie the 4.
But it's all different now. If you skate it gives you clout with grownups. Skate shame is a holdover from 80s-90s when they told you "skate or die, skaterfag". Skate dissing isn't a thing anymore.

No. I don’t think being ashamed of what you are is good for you. I don’t really bring it up but it might come up if people ask what I do in my past time and I do bring the board to work quite often as I like to go skate right after work so hiding it would be difficult. At my previous job I used to get a bunch of shit for skating for a few years but that place was fucking toxic with middle aged assholes who thought that anyone differing from the norm was just being stupid and bad. Fuck those guys.

I couldn’t imagine giving a fuck.

really, this is all that needs to be said.

this thread is so fucking weird to me...i genuinely feel bad for anyone who answered yes to this question...i hope your life gets better.

maybe it's from being so absolutely devoted to it for so long (skate tattoos and all too), but i don't know if many "adults" i know think of me as anything but a skater--that's at least the first thing they see...and that's after teaching at the university level for the past decade.

and the small circle of people i actually call "friends" are all in my life through and because of skateboarding--so it's more appropriate to ask "do you hide" how little you've been skating "from other adults" in your life?

Don't advertise it but don't hide it either, same with surfing. Anyone who could potentially have a negative perception is forgiven in advance as they're just ignorant of what skateboarding (and Surfing) brings in terms of physical/mental well-being.
