Glad to see ryan lay finally on a shoe sponsor. What a weird time to see New Balance make much better moves skate wise than Vans.
[close]

Not weird. Vans has been blowing it quite some time. I think the damn Daniel era really fucked them up. That corporate bs got to them. NB ain’t corporate, they’re privately owned. A lot less cooks in the kitchen. They make the best shoes and are assembling the dopest team in skating.
[close]

Of course New Balance is a corporation, and a multinational one with billions in revenue at that. Being privately owned has nothing to do with that. New Balance is just as corporate as any of the other big shoe brands, there's just no public shareholders. You make it sound as if New Balance was some upstart company sticking it to the man while its owner, Jim Davis, is a multi-billionaire and one of the hundred richest people in the US. He IS the man.

I used to work for new balance, but live in portland. The difference between how NB is run and how Nike and Adidas do things is staggering. Nike keeps a huge chunk of their employees as contractors to avoid giving them benefits. The ethos Of NB is very different and I was pleased to work there.

I believe he is specifically talking about the skate division which is its own thing within NB. Everyone there skates from the designer to the guy packing boxes.

This is a hilarious understanding of what makes something “corporate”. By this definition, Nike isn’t corporate. The Koch Pipeline Corporation, ALDI, IKEA, etc. are just family businesses.

Lol I’ve had about a dozen friends churn though low level, barely minimum wage contract jobs at New Balance in St. Louis. They’re just another corporation making sweatshop products out of animal skins and petrochemicals, in countries with no labor protections.

It’s ok to just buy the shoes, you don’t have to act like it instills some virtue because they’re the “right” kind of corporation.

its interesting how marketing can still convince people that a corporation is here for some other more grass roots reason and not to make profit. Sure, you said their skate division is “only skaters”, sounds good. That division is a subsidiary of the company. They guaranteed had many consultations to arrive here. That being said I like that new balance and Asics doing what Nike and adidas did, it means more footage from the skaters I like on the teams and a chance for them to get paid a livable wage. But I’m not fooled into thinking this is some “for skaters by skaters” gig because like the “all skaters” Nike division, the people above the skate division will start chopping when they reach peak saturation. My trend forecast for 2033 is 75% of this team gets cut. As for the next decade, gonna get some great parts form some great skaters out of this.

I love how you pretend to care about how companies treat employees, then when someone points out the fact that you’re wrong, your response is “minimum wage is big bucks in Missouri”

Because workers rights are reserved for people on the coasts

I can’t speak to his anecdotes but I worked at the exact same place he is mentioning and was paid well above minimum wage. STL has a very low cost of living.

Might be a fair guess to make( altho for the wrong reasons) a lot of that team will be in their late 30s or 40s in 2033. Might even be reasonable to predict 75% of all pros today won't still be pro in ten years.

There's an Instagram sticker covering the shoe. You're not missing much.

I'd be surprised if they gave him a pro shoe right away, but maybe that was the selling point in him getting on.

Yea, it's him in the design lab holding a shoe with a sticker over it, hiding it. But yea, I wouldn't be surprised if he asked for a pro model for jumping, seeing Vans kept giving him colorways rather than his own model.

NB opened the Auerbach center w/ the Celtics. On top of it being a practice facility it's a space for community events, outreach programs, etc... all funded and supported by the partnership of NB & the Celtics. Justin is notoriously a huge basketball fan so it makes perfect sense they could get him in to see the facility, cruise the locker rooms, possibly meet some players and in turn see some limited player exclusive color ways of Tatum's new shoe.
