What percentage of people that skate are skateboarders?

So many people will tell you, oh ya i used to skate or I skate.. and maybe they go to the park or curbs every other week or so... but what's the thresh hold to consider someone a skateboarder? It's certainly arbitrary and relevant. Curious what slap pals think.

I'd say maybe 10% of people that skateboard are skateboarders. It's not about how good or how much you do it either. It's more of the mindset that is reached when you just fucking go through an obsession / truly identify as such.

My son challenged me to kickflip over the low part of this round bar at the skatepark the other day. I said how about I do it over my big metal water bottle instead? It's like an inch or two lower and will fall over if it clip it. Sure enough first try I hit it and knocked it over and still landed on my board but slipped out on my ass. Guess I'm not a real sk8r but we both laughed pretty hard about it. Thankfully he filmed it for posterity too.

In 7th grade I started skating one summer like everyday in front of my house and continued, when it was nice out, to do driveway suburban skating until I got to high school. When I got there kids would ask me if I was a “skater”, and I always felt really uncomfortable answering that because I first and foremost still sucked, and I wasn’t skating streets, which I associated with real skating.

Growing up I used to think that I should have a rapport with all skaters, because we're skaters - but yeah, I know a lot of dickheads that ride skateboards who I definitely would not ever interact with in any capacity if we weren't both skaters.
