Why do we always have to have the same "no one? Who? Me?" song and dance before fessing up to it, Robbo?

JT should've been cancelled a long time ago

This loser should’ve been cancelled years ago when he copied/stole goat legend Jason Adams’ Label Kills part intro/intro music and used the exact same thing for his Dying to Live part intro.

Nothing original about this dude - it’s all in his head.  Hopefully there’s a Misfits x Jesus x Warsaw collab on the way…

What do you think the Shoe Release x 50th Birthday collab was for?

I don't think anyone mentioned SLAVE yet. But when you add it to this list of sketchy logos and names and references and the it sure doesn't help. I realize it might not have been "his" brand entirely (I think?) but he helped fund it and distribute and profited from it, etc.
[close]

isn't $lave co-owned or co-founded by some black dude named j-hon or something?
[close]

And isn't the name supposed to mean something like "slave for the money"
[close]

That's one "interpretation" however still not what people think of when the word "slave" is used.

The word "holocaust" has its own definition and isn't specific to THE Holocaust. However I wouldn't name a brand that and then have to explain "oh but i mean it differently bro!"

The same thing for WarSaw. Why name a brand something that has a sketchy connotation then you end up having to explain it all the time? Why repeatedly choose logos related to white supremacy? Weird.

Again, just a lot of questionable things that pile up with this dude. Its never ending.
[close]

Plenty of things had iffy racial connotations that people rethought after George Floyd/Ferguson.   The Holocaust is only really used in one context, slave has many literal and symbolic uses and the Ke$ha-fication of the name makes it clear what the brand is referencing.

Jamie is just a guy who rips off rock n roll and metal bands and fonts and a lot of those bands (like Joy Division being previously known as Warsaw — as if Joy Division doesn’t have a likely worse association) used iffy imagery whether they really understand the impact.   It just looks cool to them and thus to Jamie.

Im no fan of Jamie, but no one’s usual hen clucking as he gets in his righteous indignation lather is a bit much.  Jamie’s a 50 y/o high school drop out from Alabama.   We really think he has any historical grasp?
[close]

I'll add this one since I noticed this happen after George Floyd...In the Architecture and Contractor world that I work in, they no longer use the term "Master" Bedroom.  People have avoided using it in all plans that I have to review, and has been replaced with a more accepted "primary bedroom".  also being black, when I saw or heard "Master Bedroom" I would always do the eye roll because I never understood why that had to include it for the bedroom designations...Im pretty glad that people aren't using it anymore.
[close]

Kinda my point. Not difficult to avoid this shit but he keeps doing it. No one needs to say "master" just like no one needs a brand to be named Warsaw just like a logo doesn't need to be something that white supremacists use. Jamie will never know what its like to be a black man and feel the way you do. But given his position in skateboarding and the fact that he is profiting from it and the fact that its happened before he could at least make a little fucking effort to avoid things that might make others uncomfortable or even make them have to think about  the dark pasts related to their race or ethnicity, etc. Instead he's just fine being like "oh fuck it it looks so cool and I need to steal everything from music and I don't mean it 'that way' so who cares about anyone else"

as a white person who is empathic towards anyone who is the victim of racism i dont want to see any of it either. its just so fucking crazy that he can't figure all this out. or maybe he just has no feelings unless they are about himself.

Edit:

I'll just addendum my own shit and say that i guess if you are out there banging tommy g's girl, sponsoring dudes you have seen screenshots of doing pedo shit online, protecting and paying and abusers while ignoring the abuser's victims pleas for help, perhaps your moral compass is too fucked to even comprehend any sort of racial tolerance within branding.

its not that we don't know the answers, its just baffling that he continues being that dude no matter what.
[close]

Im late to this thread discussion but yeah naming your company slave or warsaw is some lame shit...I didn't even stop to think he was naming it after a polish city and immediately thought warsaw pact

Maybe he will go the lakai route and all the models will be named after cities in Poland.

This unironically happened to me about a year ago with a friend. He invited me, his friends and several co-workers to a restaurant and then kept going on that we all had to eat $1,000 worth of food or they would charge him and his wife for the remainder of the minimum. My bill came out to $40 for a half pounder burger and a shitty mocktail.

I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned Ben Horton being the founder of $lave under Black Box. I'm a big fan of the dude's art.

"Slave Skateboards (styled as $lave Skateboards), owned by former Black Box artist Ben Horton, was launched under the distribution company in 2007. The brand's debut full-length video, Radio-Television, premiered in September 2009."

Here's a link to an article that touches on it: https://memoryscreened.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/confessions-of-a-lave-driver/

"What’s the meaning behind the name?
It can really be whatever you want. The general idea is that most people are a “slave” to something. Whether it’s substance addiction, television, an occupation, society’s demands, etc. That’s why I used the dollar sign for the “S”. Because money is one of the most influential factors in a society that determines how much freedom a person has or doesn’t have. I realize that “Slavery” typically describes people keeping other people as legal property and forcing them to live a certain way and therefore making them into personal slaves.

But that is only one aspect of the word “slave”. For $LAVE Skateboards it’s about the other side of the word “slave” that refers to people being controlled by or dependent on something or society as a whole. And therefore reminding us to always pay attention to that and to continue to preserve whatever freedoms we have, while striving for more.

My point is, we need to keep an eye on what freedoms we are sacrificing. If we don’t, that line at the airport security area is only going to get longer. And your personal belongings in your bag and your home are going to become more and more public.

Haha, that was a small rant, good thing nobody is reading this!

Cool.

Valid opinion, but I respectfully disagree with the viewpoint it's lame. I think Heroin and $lave are some of the sickest brands with the coolest art direction. Skateboarding is as addictive as a drug, and we are all kind of slaves in a capitalistic society if you're not at the top. I appreciate the existentialism in the concepts. It's where my teenage angst blossomed into.

As others have probably said, I think the guy has a huge ego, wants to redeem himself for the failure of "Fallen," is greedy and wants to stay relevant in the skateboard industry.

With their gimmick it’s pretty easy to tell what they mean with the name of the brand. As a black guy, I’ve never felt comfortable buying their products or wearing a shirt that says $lave on it, but I did have a couple Goemann boards back in the early 10s.

I no longer think JT is a racist, I think I agree with the consensus that he’s a GenX edgelord idiot who isn’t told “No” enough. Maybe a bit tone deaf too since he’s 50 and in a bubble.

So dumb "don't think of the typical meaning of slave, think of it the other way...and that's $lave"

Then why not use $heep...$lave just sounds lame as fuck

Sheep is actually ABD
It was a price point shoe brand spun off of Etnies in '97

Kind of a sick name though, I would ride a $heep board too.

Don’t remember it being price point more than Vegan.   The Sheep Ed’s at least were priced like a normal shoe

It was supposed to be Price Point but whatever the material they used for the vegan shoes and I think canvas have higher tariffs then suede and leather, so the shoes actually ended up costing more on the back end. I worked at a skate shop then and I think another part of their failure was Sole Tech had 4 companies running at that time and unless you were like a mail order shop that's a lot of shoes to stock, I think my shop would carry Accels then 1-2 ES pro models 2 basic Emericas and maybe 1 sheep shoe. I'm gonna say most of Sole tech was propped up on sales of Accels at the time, Sheep just added more payroll really. I also seem to remember there was some crossover shoes that were made on both brands and that was also kinda confusing for customers
