What’s the best curb *angle* for slappies
« on: July 16, 2023, 04:51:32 PM »
I brought this up with some friends and it was WAY more controversial than I expected. I have a harder time doing slappies on angled curbs, to me it makes way more sense on a 90 degree angle curb and I think tricks lock better.

Based on the vitriol it sounds like I’m in the minority but I wanted to get some other opinions. Some of it sounds like it may be my *~*California Privilege*~* and having access to a lot of perfectly manicured red curbs.
If you see offensive comments, just let it go into one eye and let it out of the other eye, no tears and not sadness or anger.

I’m in the steeper club as well. Don’t mind if they have a Cali cut AS LONG as it’s not mellower than 80*. Anything less than that fucks me up severely. I ride classic shaped wheels so it’s nearly impossible to lock in on mellow curbs. Add to that fact, there’s some curbs that are skated a lot and people slather the top and side with Jerhi Curl to nose slide a curb that sucks for them, they become deadly.

If you can’t slap a 90, can you really even do a slappy?

This is the mellow one I was referring to:

It’s almost a 55* cut.
The curb itself isn’t that much of a problem, variety and such, I have more of an issue with wax abuses on such mellow curbs. If you want long nose/tails, hit a steeper curb. Don’t try to force it to do something it can’t.

Find a 90 degree curb, ram up into it. Find a 60-80 degree curb, ram up into it. What feels better?

As long as I get to hear and feel metal and stone crushed together beneath my feet I don't really care.

My favorite curbs tend to be low and vertical or very steep, but that's probably mostly a function of living in the rust belt and having little choice. I really like the sloped ones I've found though. Our curbs crumble so fast the city occasionally puts angle iron on them to try and squeeze a few more years out which is a whole different, very slippery beast.

What is wax abuse? I’m fine with a thick layer of wax as long as it’s not on the ground.

sharper vertical curbs definitely feel more satisfying to get into and the lock-in is better. i find myself getting lazy when slappying angled curbs and just missing the front truck lock-in a lot of the time

You don’t have to smash into it. You just carve. It feels different not to ollie. It’s magical, I can’t describe it.

Curb angle. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s not a double sider. You can die on a double sider.

Double siders rule. My favorite two are double siders and down hill:

Not having to worry about cars fucking rules also.

Edit add semi circle's to the options dude (as in the Lyon one).

fully agree with this. A double sider is the only curb I skate lately though so I've stuck with crooked grinds and noes slides pretty much only. Everything else I've tried has turned into me finding new ways to slam. It seems like it's all mental though because I could at least do 50/50, 5-0, and sloppy smith on one sided curbs.

No one you knew of, the first slappy I remember in modern times is AVE in minefield, but people have kept these tricks alive since it’s inception.
