Tricks you learned that made you forget other tricks?
« on: July 25, 2023, 05:27:03 PM »
We all know the age old tale of every skater learning 360 flips and then losing varial flips. Learning kickflips, losing heelflips etc…

Have you learned any “harder tricks” just to completely lose its “easier” predecessor?

I learned blunt kickflips and now I can’t blunt fakie to save my life, same with pivot fakie once I learned pivot shuv to fakie.

Anyone else?

Front hurricanes made me lose feeble fakies. Ironically, I’ve lost them both now that I haven’t had a ramp in half a year.

If I even just try one double flip, I might land it but that will ruin my kickflip for a while, maybe the entire day if I keep insisting. Feels like polluting one of my favorite tricks for myself and so I just stay away from them (but do not downright hate the trick but for that; some people have done good ones).

I also alternate through phases where I have a firm frontside pop shove-it on flat until I automatically come to the conclusion that at this point, just a couple of frontside pressure flips shouldn't hurt. Nope, that always means every moderate effort frontside pop shove-it for the next six months will now turn primo just as automatically. I still land them but the catch feels way off until the flatness magically comes back again. I've just accepted it.

Nollie front foot impossibles and nollie 360 flips used to interfere for years but not anymore.

The last time I ever did a switch front heel was the day I learned regular front heels. I could do them fairly consistently, but  somehow traded one for the other

Learning nollie bs biggerspins messed with my nollie bigspins, always over spin them now.

Conversely I learned pressure flips before any other flip trick and had them fairly consistently, since learning kickflips all those years ago I haven't been able to flip a pressure kickflip right since, always wants to rotate or whatever if I try them now, not that I'm too fussed about losing them.

For quite a while, newly learned half cab flips messed up my fakie varial flips...which kind of makes sense I guess.

Sort of the same - I'm in the midst of trying to get good inverts, but when I first started learning them, I would over-rotate and do invert-reverts on accident.

Now its a battle to do regular handplants without reverting to fakie.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

Varial heels were one of my favorite and easiest tricks until the day I learned laser flips. They're just impossible now.
Also can't fs shuv (over rotates or flips) but fs bigspin and fs 360shuv every try

I learned how to do this weird pressure flip thing where I flip down, and then flip my board over. And my feet have to be in the most horrendous position. I traded that for dignity

fakie front-side flips replaced half-cab kickflips.   It wasn't an immediate loss, but fakie front-side flips are easier now and I stopped practicing half-cab kickflips (maybe for the better, half-cab kickflips are probably top 7 ugliest skateboard tricks).

Since I really like halfcab flips, I am genuinely interested what your other 6 ugliest tricks are.

I learned switch 360 flips before I learned switch flip. After years of trying I finally learned switch flip really good and completely lost my switch 360 flip for 2 years. They’re back and better than ever luckily but I spent so much time relearning that trick that I lost my switch hardflips. And now my switch flips are also kinda meh. Worth it, Switch 360 flip is my favorite and best feeling trick.

Few people can make them look good. Most people are behind the trick rather than above it.

Focusing in noseslides for some time kind of destroyed my crooked grinds. They used to be my go to on every obstacle, now that confidence is gone and I'm struggling. Just doesn't feel right. I want to go back to 100% knowing that I'm locking in correctly. But how?
What would you guys say, is the main difference in technique between a noseslide and crook? I feel like the noseslide is maybe more of a sideways motion, whereas the crook is put straight down onto the ledge/rail.

Noseslide you kind of turn and jam into the position from the side but crooked grind you're actually trying to get on top of the ledge from a diagonal angle but otherwise straight approach, and then crush that truck by actually standing on top of it, like a backside nosegrind with no subtlety. It's a 'straighter' trick than a noseslide typically feels like, that's why you sometimes see people learn crooked grinds first and then immediately backside 50-50's but for a while they still look like they're going for a crooked grind on those, and just rectify the position late to also lock in with the back truck. So to me your impression sounds correct.

not necessarily a new trick, but my flatground tricks go to shit once I start trying to do them into stuff.

I had a good kickflip, but once I started to try to do kf manual, kf 5050, kf crooks, I lost them. I can't kickflip for shit now.

I learned fsshuvs, had them popped good and stuff then tried to do fsshuv bs5050 and now my fsshuvs are ugly as shit and for some reason they fuck with my front knee super hard.

I guess overall my flatground sucks ass I land heavy as shit on every trick and put so much stress on my lower back. I don't even really wanna practice them anymore just cause of how much physically it hurts to try them. I get jealous of my shorter friends cause they seem to be able to just fling shit and be so light all the time.

I used to suck at tre flips, so I did a lot of varial flips instead.

Finally took the time to learn how to scoop properly. Gained tre flips with some consistency, completely lost varial flips (although I can still fakie v-flip every so often).

I personally think trading varial flips for tre-flips is worth it.

I know it's a common one but I never got that interference myself, I think because I visualize them as two competely different tricks and have a different foot positioning for each. For varial flip my front foot is way further up the board, near the front truck bolts and then I pop pop shove-it style ('straight' pop off the center of the tail) and just extend my front leg to kick through it. 360 flip the flick happens closer to the center and so my feet are a bit closer together and the sideways sweep on the pop is fiercer for the board to spin the whole way around but the kick to go through with the right timing for the flick nonetheless.

Used to be able to do impossibles that were really more like 3 shuvs pretty consistently. Took the time to learn how to properly wrap my impossibles and now I land them way less frequently and cannot 3 shuv at all.

Plus side, when I actually do land one it looks 100% better now.

i was gonna say to be able to do 3 flips. 3 shoves, and impossibles is unattainable....you'd have to be three different people....

Since I tried to learn bs heels, I can't heelflip straight anymore.. They always turn bs.. The worst is.. I never learned bs heels, so now I got shitty heelflips and I can't bs heel for shit.

I somehow suck at basic ass bs boardslides now after putting a lot of XP into feebles and bs 5050s. I can bs feeble to infinity and beyond now but can't boardslide a really long (round) flatbar, it's about 6 meter / 20 feet long. I can consistently bs board half the rail, but never the whole thing. It always goes to one side and it makes me insane.

It has to have something to do with how I ollie into it if I'm trying to do the whole thing, because if I slide half of it, I'm perfectly on top of it and could go for another half.

This used to be the easiest shit. Anybody experience this? Help

Most people with good fs bigspins can't do them switch and vice versa. My guess is it's preference to spin in one direction rather than learning one of these preventing the other.

Learning pressure flips put a curse on my pop shove-its. Anytime I try pop shove-it it pressures inward and the chances of primo are quite high.
