Vans Faces Big Problems (Forbes Article)
« on: October 14, 2023, 12:11:45 PM »
https://www.forbes.com/sites/walterloeb/2023/10/09/vans-faces-athletic-shoe-dilemma/?sh=45a6969f6ce9

However accurate these projections are, I will say that I believe I saw fewer people wearing Vans this year than in recent years.  But I don't get out much.

"Vans has been popular in California, where there are special tracks to allow athletes to test the products on skateboards. It is very exciting to watch, and many athletes enjoy the opportunity to compete on these tracks."

Those don’t even look like vans in the image they used. Lookin like some off brand knock offs.

Our boy @Simple Magic did a good analysis on this:

Apparently the author (if not AI) is 98 years old.

You’re definitely calling skateparks “special tracks” if you’re a few decades older than skateboarding itself.

Dumb ai article aside, their quality has definitely tanked. I've been skating sk8-hi pros for a couple years now which were always pretty good, but the most recent pair I got is absolute dogshit. Wore them once and just gonna sell them. I got warned that their quality went down but I didn't think it'd be THAT bad

I actually think the article while not interesting to skaters, is probably more accurate than our takes on how the team and quality of skate shoes has anything to do with their quarterly results....normies bank roll the brand...not us....

I’ve said it time and time again, HOKA is eating Vans’ lunch…

I doubt that, they have completely different markets

I’d say Vans have overtaken Converse as “America’s basic sneaker”.  They’re ubiquitous now.  While their popularity may go up and down by small degrees, they’re probably not going anywhere.  I think the big problems they’re having are more to do with their bloated/out of touch management.  That and all the shitty halfcabs they keep pumping out (jk)

The running shoes are actually really popular in the marine industry. The ultra range vr3's have almost taken over amongst us who fish a lot. Super comfy, dry out quick and have extremely good grip. Super niche market that's not making them any money but just thought it was interesting.

I was being silly. Sarcasm isn’t always easy to translate in writing.

I keep hearing about HOKA’s taking away market share but they look like orthodic sneakers. Sketchers should be shook though…

Sorry, I missed that haha.    I actually went out and bought a pair of Hokas after a long shift at the hospital in Gilbert Crocketts destroyed my back.  They look horrible, like Frankenstein shoes, but they’re hopefully saving my back so I can skate a little longer.  I won’t be caught dead  wearing them outside of a work setting though.

This is weird shit like feedback loop algorithm bait for high frequency trading bots. All it does is state the obvious. Earnings reports are Oct 30 so any increase in volatility leading up to that date drives up the previously opened options value. They (vfc) said months ago they anticipate a drop of nearly 10 bucks per share.

I got the ATRs for running in the forest, good running shoe but looks like a flying saucer. Would rather wear those than Vans tho.
