Spot History w/the Dern Brothers
« on: December 14, 2023, 09:53:32 AM »
The Dern Brothers have been going to famous spots and showing everything that's gone down on them, sometimes bringing in guests for short interviews. Pretty good stuff, if a little too long:

Love this series. Also the Derns are all sick at skating. They have street parts if you haven't seen it is worth the watch. Very heavy handrails

it's a little YouTube-zany for me, but the meat of it is actually good.

I dig their channel - when I first saw a thumbnail I thought it was going to be kookishness with the dude with the colored hair, but they seem to know a lot about skate history mentioning the tricks that have been landed (or not) in the spots. When I started skating in Brazil (2001), it was really hard and expensive getting hold of US videos, so I like watching old legendary tricks that I might have missed.

Plus, they rip too. One of those guys just went to Brazil and landed lots of stuff in shitty spots.

The algorithm must be lining up for these dudes, because I've had all three of these videos suggested to me this week. Pretty nice history lessons by a couple dudes who actually rip, Hot Topic hair not withstanding.
Andy Anderson, I cannot sanction your buffoonery.

This is a guilty pleasure of mine for sure. Definitely a little kooky clickbaity kind of vibes, but they're obviously serious skate rats at heart. And I imagine trying to make a living off skating these days is really tough, so if it brings in a little extra money for them, then great. They also research each spot really well. There was a couple of times I thought they'd forget a specific trick, but they'd pull it out last minute.

Haven't watched these yet but I think I will, now. Been a fan of Kanaan ever since I saw him in the Hollywood Hellbomb video.
There was no wire. Clark's planet needed him.

I loooved this Kanaan part back when it came out, and I skated with Dalton a while back and he was nice as shit. Big fan of the bros, and like many others, find their videos surprisingly enjoyable.

A guilty pleasure of mine too, but that Destin fellow has some of the worst hair I've ever seen. Also, Dalton looks like a massive kook with the bandana and pit vipers and has heinous style but is a pretty gnarly transition skater. Kanaan seems pretty chill though.

I love watching these. They are true skate nerds for sure...and they kill it on a board. I wont be surprised if kannan has his name on a zero board in the near future.

Find the Derns pretty insufferable, but still enjoy these.

Been enjoying these. Kanaan is an absolute monster, probably the gnarliest handrail skater out right now. His last zero part was borderline suicidal. Recently rewatched the rough cut and could not believe how fucked it is:

I, too, thought these videos would end up being really lame due to the typical YouTube clickbait thumbnails. I'm glad I was wrong. These are pretty sick.

Yeah I like these too, I'll admit it. I also like the ones where Kanaan creates frankenstein spots in his backyard.

I'm not a huge fan but how this guy is not pro? With his skating + all the YouTube and viral stuff I feel that he could have a good amount of board sales.

When people say they aren't too into these dudes, they just looked at their fits in thumbnails.  These dudes are unhateable skate rats and they rip too.

they do a good job on those videos. lots of detail too. they noted that kevin romar nollie heeled wilshire 15 twice. that's definitely worth mentioning and easy to overlook.

This is 2nd (3rd?) wave skate YouTube, and it's pretty good. I wouldn't bat an eye if they started a board company and turned Kaanan pro. The fact Zero hasn't done it is a crime.

Cheesy YouTuber vibes aside, it’s clear these guys are skate rats and know a lot of skate history/do their research. I really like that they find all the clips, significant slams or near-makes, bmx and scooter tricks, even the random local that managed to get an nbd. It’s gotta take a lot of digging to find those clips, so I really respect that. I hope they can continue to get guests to add the back stories, that’s always a nice touch.

It's quality content.   They do their research and back it up with clips.  I hope they are able to make it work and get paid.

I feel like I may have watched an episode on Carlsbad gap, and it wasn’t so bad. I’ll take it over most skate YouTube channels.

I might be in the minority here but I enjoyed the rough cut far more than the actual painkiller part. I still liked the part but the GnR two song edit was overly dramatized with the drawn out slow motion imo. When you’re attacking psycho/hairball spots like Kanaan it doesn’t really require those extra bells and whistles in the edit.
Anyways, these Dern Brothers videos are really fun. I dig spot histories and they seem to do their homework. One aspect I especially enjoy is when they go over how you could “hypothetically” make the spots skate-able again.
