I always thought it was really dumb that skateboarding had this big grudge against jocks and sports. Do jocks suck? Yes, but I've encountered many hardcore skaters that can be just as insufferable. I grew up wrestling and running track and can say that all the exercise and training from back then helped with my balance and pop. Seeing a lot of pro's embrace training and working out is a big bright spot for not only performance enhancement but recovery as well. Staying fit and eating healthy goes a long way, I'm nearly 30 and can still dunk haha.

I like skateboarding. I like sports. I don’t mind a measured amount of intersection between the two. However, it sure can get ugly, as demonstrated by the aforementioned Oakley ad.

Just here to also say that the Koston Oakley ad is so corny

Why does every skater feel the need to justify their other interests by saying “it’s just like skateboarding”? I’m glad you enjoy both, but beating your 3 mile time jogging is not the same as learning a nollie crooks on a ledge. And that’s ok.

Not all your personality has to be skateboard focused any more and skateboarders are more interesting for it. The time of us versus them is over. Everyone skates.  It’s just another thing people grow up doing.

I’m more than a skater, I also beyblade, and I don’t care if you call me a jock for it.

A fine article.

The shoes on Jahmal look like serious toe pinchers. I was a big fan of Adidas team at that time, less the ads.

In my opinion we are long past the idea of “it’s okay to enjoy skateboarding and other sports.” It is no longer being argued or shamed.
If skate journalists want to write about sports they should just do that without this particular angle still attached. Paul Rodriguez was in a California tourism commercial! Pros have rocked jerseys for decades! Knowing Koston was into basketball was as easy as knowing he shaved his head!

I would be interested in reading more about Davey Sayles transition from football to skating and the needed weight loss.

Feel like the jocks vs skaters (or even nerds or whatever) is way more of an American thing. Maybe because American sports are so structured thru school and shit. Maybe it's the no school uniforms so you grow up thinking your clothes are somehow who you are as a person.

Meh, it was an interesting attempt but I'm not convinced.

Sports are fine for the most part, the lamest part is how people would rather cheat than lose.

Most ‘Sports’ revolve around ‘competition’, and the path towards profession that particular mindset entails. Lots of rules, and a very performance-based approach.
Not all sports, but probably the majority.

Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding and a few others revolve around ‘getting rad’.
That is a personal, subjective experience and drives a more unique type of progression, and the mindset pulls it in a very different kind way, with different end goals.

I heard they changed the start instruction on 100 m tracking to Let’s Fucking Go!

Besides that, fully agree with @cucktard on that matter.

I always felt like MLB baseball and pro skating had a kindred spirit. The insane physics for all major league pitches, the beauty of a perfect swing and crack of a bat (especially bombs), assists/double plays/awesome at the wall catches or stretched out line drive snags. Love watching my Mariners. Love basketball too.  Go Knicks!

Skating and sports are cozier than ever. How did that happen?

The major paymasters being Nike, Adidas and New Balance has nothing to do with it.

It seems ridiculous now but in the 80s & early 90s "jocks" used to constantly harass skaters it was not like it is now.  Old dudes are fully allowed to hate jocks and sports because of this, pass given.

Thank you. I'd argue the rednecks were worse, but there was a lot of overlap between the rednecks and jocks. Sometimes it was refreshing to be called 'skate fuck' instead of 'skater fag', just because you heard it less.

These brands aren't into skating for sport, they are into the lifestyle.....

Short of Nyjah, none of the big pros even enter contests.....
