Climbing/Bouldering
« on: June 27, 2024, 07:59:07 AM »
Surprised there's not a thread for this already, popular as it is. Definitely helps me loads to stay in shape.

I was looking for a climbing thread because I had a question re the Olympic qualifiers, in case some of you are watching both skating and climbing both. I was wondering: is there a rule in the Climbing comp that already qualified people cannot participate in a Qualifier event? Because literally NO qualified climber participated in the last event. Whereas in skating it seems to be a free for all (Jagger trying to one-up himself in pool, etc.) What's the reasoning here?

You do know the system tells you to start a new thread when the other one is old, yeah? But hey, keep policing fellow skaters over nothing, important use of your time.

Just answering your question bud

Seems pointless to create a 3rd thread but whatever, gotta keep that thread count up I guess

Who's gonna win Mens Gold? Janja seems pretty unbeatable for the women's which is a shame because there's so many other exciting talents (Orianne!)

I'm climbing 3 days a week, best shape of my life, and i don't get injured. My flexibility and overall strength has vastly improved. Guess I'm not a skater anymore but I'm happier with life so there's that.

Also on that 3-4 days/week routine, lots of fun. Interesting as a subculture as well, feels like a wide gamut of people finding their place within the culture, from jocks to hippies and crusty motherfuckers.

A breeding ground for Good Pants as well.

Genuine question: Do you climbers drive around and notice spots you might be able to climb, like we all do when we see skate spots? Or is it like you are strictly park climbers? Like if it wasn't made for climbing, you don't even waste your time? Honestly curious...

it depends on where you live i'd assume; urban climbing is definitely a thing for some folks. i live in Houston so there's zero rocks until you drive 2.5-3 hours westward to Austin/Hill country area.

I'm still on young dad life so can't make time for more than twice a week but it does wonders for me. And yeah, I'd say it gives you spot eye, although more for rocks than urban spots. Whenever I'm somewhere rocky I try to spot routes.

Feel like they Combined scoring system is still imperfect. Lead doesn't make enough of a difference it feels like? Or maybe it's in combo with the routesetting that is ultra modern for bouldering but really just pumpy for lead? If the leading route was a little more brainy or creative, maybe it would help to give it more weight.

Shameless thread resurrection but I wonder if anybody else in the mountaineering sphere has been following Jon Krakauer's incredible clapback opus against Michael Tracy?

the message merely suggests you “please consider starting a new thread”. so, no, “the system” does not tell you to do anything. this is on you and you alone. and i don’t care what they say about you shtonk… keep fighting the good fight.
