Do any of you hit the river? Spend your mornings checking the hatch? Tie flies? Do you roll cast on occasion? This is the thread.

I was really into fly fishing for a year (MN), then I bought a bass boat and haven't touched the fly rod since

I enjoyed all the aspects of it, except that any decent river/stream was 2 hours away. I've only hooked 5 trout, and remember each one distinctly, unlike boat fishing catches
You all getting spoon fed a comfortable place.

Yep. Mostly a saltwater guy and mostly striped bass. Lots from shore but also have a friend with a skiff and we fish often, especially in the fall. This spring I spent more time going for smallmouth though and enjoyed it a lot.

Had a good opening to the brook trout season, but now since it's been so hot and humid, trout's been getting harder to catch.

I have a river that's within walking distance of my place which is full of small mouth, walleye, catfish and the occasional striped bass. Always fun to swing big ol' wooly buggers after work. If i don't catch anything, at least i'm a 10 min walk away from home. Haven't been in like 10-12 days though, water levels have been quite low.

Got skunked in both of my Atlantic Salmon trips in the early season. Hooked a good one I which ended up losing as I was reeling him in, bastard was like 15 feet away from me. At least I got to witness my good friend catching his personal best, that was fun to see. That sumbitch was big.

Might try the fall run for salmon and sea trout. Sea trout in the fall is always fun and  you're almost guaranteed to catch something, and fall salmon has crazy colours. They're just a bit lazier and don't fight as much.

OK season so far, but I haven't invested as much time or energy as I used to.

Why cant this just be The Fishing Thread?  Had an awesome weekend fishing lake of the woods. Got a 5lb smallmouth bass with a top water and made my weekend.  Had a 50" muskie miss and follow the same lure earlier in the day but fucked it up, nearly passed out in excitement

Went out on the bay for halibut yesterday. Didn’t catch shit, just some bait. Think I’m doing something wrong, second time getting skunked in 2 weeks.

Went out for a snapper run today. Fish were scarce from recent storms. Sharks and barracuda were punishing our gear and fish every drop. Managed to land a handful of decent ones but it was a tough trip.

Blew off work today and went fishing with some mates, was sick

Went to bribie island, super early, flicked lures on these sandflats at run out tide at this place called buckleys hole then went and fished the canals

Was sick at first spot just wading through water sight casting at shit, then just peppering the weed beds with lures, came across a school of soapies, they’re like undersized jewfish and fight good but didn’t get any

Caught pike for live bait, also brought pilchards, beach worms, prawns for bait also brought hella lures we caught Moses perch, flathead, cod, bream and saw a moray eel and a monster long Tom and a sea turtle

Everything went back except for this poor bream’s eye, the bro hooked him through eye somehow and pulling the hook out also removed his eye

Then we went and got a feed of seafood I had bugs and coronas then I bought a bunch of whiting and sea scallops to take home for dinner and the irony of that is not lost on me

Had to look up the slang terms, the nomenclature doesn't jive between AUS and NA. Bream are bluegill panfish in the US south. Australian barracuda are called pike and snook in AU which are a freshwater esox species and a saltwater flats fish in NA. Long Tom is a houndfish, those damn things. Was fishing the surf in Baja Mexico for rooster fish and if you blind cast you'd feed one and kiss your fly goodbye. Soapies sound cool. Rad you saw wildlife, one of the best parts of fishing. Love a saltwater flat.

This thread needs more action. Kinda funny to see fishing get some hate for being trendy in other threads.

I saw several guys in a river near me last month, all decked out in fly fishing gear with those overly priced fly fishing rods not catching anything. its cool to see that spinning reel next to that trout.  :)
I will be going back out to east texas in early march (maybe sam rayburn), i'll post if i catch anything.

That was alright he seems like good bloke for sure

We got this freshwater spot about hour away behind a prison but it’s overgrown as fuck it’s tough going out there. Can get Mary river cod there tho, they get over a metre

I have never done any fly fishing I think I would like it though. The gear is so expensive though

You should check out a book called "the river why" by David James Duncan.

Just read a quick synopsis of the book.  It sounds like a good book, I'll give it a read.

Any tenkara enjoyers here?  I've been fishing since I was a small child and fly fishing for 15ish years, but got into tenkara in the last 5 years as something to carry easily on bike trips.  It's been perfect for bluelining and serves as a great excuse to get out of the house and explore new to me forest roads.

I've been fishing my entire life and love my Ugly Stick.  Affordable, yet good quality.  My main rod is an ugly stick with a decent Shimano reel on it.  I've caught everything from panfish to big pike and musky on it.

What rig are you using? drop shot, carolina, double drop??? I've been catching some decent size ones (nothing legal last 3 months) using 3' gulp minnow-watermelon pearl bait with a 1oz weight & 1/O hook.

It's a glorified cane pole like grandpa had, but pretty fun.  Different casting and handling means different fly behaviors means new tactics for approaching waters.

Good stuff, big up your buddy, seems like a real sweet guy. What outfitter is he with again? Laser to the far bank at 22:16, man's got a beauty of a cast with the 2 hander.

Steelhead fishing is some grim shit these days with the returns, really great your friend is out there tagging. They say those fish can make it to the coast of Japan. Picked up a fly rod about 15 years ago and I used to guide in Oregon east of the Cascades. Would fish the Santiam for trout when I was headed over the pass for work. Some days you'd catch a stocker every cast on Elk Hair Caddis. It's so green and lush there compared to the high desert, just gorgeous.

As for fly fishing gear being expensive there are some really good rods at reasonable prices. Redington, Echo, TFO. Some dogs but some real gems with cult followings. There is a price of admission as with anything but you get a lifetime warranty. My guide quiver of inexpensive rods has likely caught more fish than my insanely priced personal stuff.

Stoked to see folks in here, thanks for starting this thread OP!

My favorite rod is a 6'6" 4wt fiberglass Cabela's rod I got in 2015 for $65.  There's a lot to be said about a good stand-out product from a budget line.

Ugly Sticks are good and affordable. They are a bit whippy/bendy in the tip for my taste. I mostly use mine for guest set ups these days. Only Ugly Stick I would be hesitant to buy and use is their surf rods. They are just…..too ugly.

I really like their Tiger Lite jigging rods for vertical jigging offshore. They were dope for the price back when they had Fuji components. They have been cheapened up a bit in their current iteration, but still super reliable for the price.🔄
