World's oldest person

RIP

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/04/world/asia/oldest-person-dies-japan.html

Tomiko Itooka. Cool name.

The page loaded slow enough that I read the whole article before hitting the paywall. I know there’s a list that whomever’s in charge goes down so we already have an oldest living person, however this lead me down a thirty minute rabbit hole and into a messageboard called “The 110 Club” where, I guess, people follow supercentarians - which is a term I was not familiar with. All the people round the world living into their hundreds. Brought up a lot of other questions I won’t bog down this particular thread with.

Anyway, genuinely fascinating. Really amazing how the body just keeps going at some point. Articles said Itooka still hiked well into her 80s and climbed the steps of her Shinto temple without a cane too. R.I.P.

Dang, P. Fluid too now, on the same day as Mr. Lynch, this is crazy.

Been listening to the Spyz since like 90

Any other Spyz fans on the board?

Got to see them live back in the day too and it was....memorable.

Hard to believe how many iconic images (Hendrix, Bowie, Lou Reed, The Dead, you name it) this one dude created for their posters.

Michael Buroway was killed in a hit and run accident.

He was an amazing scholar and an energetic lecturer.

His book Manufacturing Consent is a great look at how management fucks over workers

Edit: Why are we doing these RIPs in a single thread? They fade away and its not like there is a limit on how many threads we can create.

Tom Robbins too. A friend was a big fan, and my uncle lives in his hometown. I was at a bookstore last month where I saw a first edition of Another Roadside Attraction. Pretty rad. 92 is a good long life.

I don’t mind a containment RIP thread. Gnar for @Tear Up a Trick for the creation and maintenance of it. Maybe it’s my own tic, but it bothers me how many dead end threads exist. I’ve been learnin about people in here too. The standalone threads just have a name as a title and I don’t click on em all. This thread generally offers an immediate description of the person.

Fucking hell I've dreaded this day and that is not the ending I expected to read. Gas leak sounds like the only answer unless they went for a Michael Haneke Seventh Continent exit out.

Do yourself a favor and watch one of his great lesser known roles in the neo noir Night Moves (1975)

Might rewatch the Firm tonight
