I went back and watched all the prelims and it really solidified my dislike of the judging.
There was a trick for getting high scores in THPS on ramps where you would nollie, flip, grab, spin 720. If you simply change the direction of the d-pad (eg you first do the flip and grab for “right”, then you do the flip and grab at “diagonally down right”, then you do “diagonally up right”, etc.) they all count as different tricks even though they are basically the same and you get crazy points.
I feel like the Olympic judging similarly places too much weight on stuff like 540 variations on flat walls, so that in effect it penalizes skaters who dare skate more of the park or do something weird and interesting.
In the Finals, everyone besides Schaar, Sorgente, and Pedro (who was robbed) was a total snooze. In the prelims Sorgente and Barros had runs that were way under-scored and everyone with interesting style was quickly gone. The French guy, Spanish, German, and Swedish all had stuff I liked. I even thought ANDY FUCKING MAC had a great run! Whatever, not enough spins I guess.
Talk shit on Breaking but I think it was awesome they had the balls to be like “you’re not going to win solely because you’re a really good failed gymnast” and lowered scores for repeated moves.
