Just watched the premiere version of the Last Resort video and then I watched it on Youtube and it's safe to say that quality on Youtube fucking sucks. I mean it's no news but I felt like saying this. It would be cool if companies would also upload their videos on their websites so the quality doesn't get compressed so bad.

Youtube is pretty good at compression these days. If the video quality is bad then it's on the person who uploaded it

This^^

Might be a good idea to upload separately to their own website due to music copyrights but as far as compression is concerned that’s on on the editor.

And limit their content to only being able to be viewed on that website?
Quoting another poster without commenting anything yourself is the most annoying form of virtue signaling on the internet IMO. Just so lazy.

Youtube's compression isn't good despite what the "experts" on here are telling you. In fact it 100% sucks a cock for everything thats outside of the standard image. The algorithm is now so heavily driven towards "optimization" that it fucks artistic imagery to pieces. Grain, intentional noise, low luminance details, any kind of blurred/smooth gradient, just anything that differs from a "modern optimized image" - these are all death sentences for your image quality on YT.

Also fuck the Google monopoly. Sadly Vimeo's gone to complete shit after they sold out.

While I agree they should host on their website for posterity sake, it costs them money to do that, especially if the video is popular. They also make no money from ads that you usually would on YouTube. It really serves them no benefit.

For the sake of preservation it would be a good idea. Never know what’s YouTube gonna look like in 5 years the way it’s going.

I think the problem with this is so many eyes get to see videos on Youtube. You'd lose so many views if you could only watch the video on a  skate brand's website. So less people would see it, less people to promote your brand's products to. Sadly Youtube is the place to get most eyes on your video. I too wish Vimeo hadn't shit the bed.

I didn’t say they should ONLY upload on their website. Read better the title.

I don’t know how you guys can say that YouTube is good at compressing when you can barely see the grain if there’s any in a video, in low light everything looks pixelated and the list goes on. Also it’s not the editor’s fault since the premiere version of the video that I mentioned it’s very crisp and sharp while the one on YouTube is trash if you watch it full screen.

A suggestion could be a link to their youtube channel. Skatebrands websites are so empty these days. Not even a proper team page in most cases any more.

Most of them end up on thrasher.com.  Trade one monopoly for another.

Bandwidth costs money.  Google makes money selling data/advertising.  I doubt a skateboard website could fund their bandwidth expenses by selling the small, niche data they collect.

Anyways I'd rather see that money spent paying a pro skateboarder a living wage, or providing healthcare.
Fuck you and your giant signature.

go back to mail / email lists the only way to find out about stuff
monthly / quarterly Zines / catalogues printed of your stuff
DVDs included
can order clothes from the catalogue or maybe just have a web store cause that is kinda important. but the only way to get the DVDs and Zines is to be part of the mail list. and then some nerd will upload it to youtube later etc.
put on that tinfoil hat, stop giving Meta and Google all your information
would be kind of cool to run a company like that.

False. The quality is excellent, maybe try the premium.

Ironically, Youtube itself is probably the best way to find out about the shortcomings of whatever version of their/Google's proprietary webmVP9/hevc bastard-reencoder they are now running. If you want a comparison just find a music Video shot on 16mm that's also on Vimeo - the Frank Ocean ones for example or Florence and the Machine's Album Film.

when skate or die ended, there were a lot of good leo romero clips that have been lost to the seas of time . youtube may not be perfect but its way better to have the clips than not.

Idk how that would be any better for compression and I know it would certainly be awful for ad revenue and traffic

I love this idea, I wish more major companies were invested into zines and physical media in general. But companies are def getting more exposure and the like through youtube

Like it or not, Youtube is now the unofficial archive for skate vids. You want to leave your mark, upload it to YT.
