By next year every MLK Boulevard will be renamed James Earl Ray Drive.

I work in scientific publishing. Obviously I'm aware of peer review for research articles and the like, but I guess I'm a bit ignorant on specifics in the funding area regarding grants. Are (Were) you reviewing cases where researchers in your field are requesting federal grants from the NIH (or something akin to it) to do their research/work?

I'm employed by a private company that's contracted to aid in the peer review process for grants under the DOJ. No issues with the company I work for and we're sitting here ready to get peer review season started, but DOGE/Trump have things jammed up. They've had us stuck in limbo since January 31, and we ran out of "justifiable work" under our contract. Normally we'd be very busy right now. Sad times.

The ambassador to Canada stating it’s “outrageous” that Canadian businesses have pulled a lot of American products from their shelves is pretty funny. He’s all “we haven’t done anything like that.” Nah, your leader just continually threatens to annex the country, I can’t imagine why anybody would be upset about that.

I kinda want Canada to call his bluff and do it and send 2 senators and like 40 representatives to Congress that will fight his agenda

I'm pretty certain with all these protests deportations ie human trafficking and outrage going on. I believe there's a much larger insidious subterfuge being cooked up to declare martial law so there's no mid term elections/power shift so he can be in power indefinitely. Don't quote me on this I'm just looking at history and it seems likely due to how play by play this shit show debacle continues.

Oh shit.... Yeah, we relied on a Fed Grant for our funding... No NOFO... so we had to close... Our Federal reps were also canned at 2am via email...

Hope things work out for you @Gnarfunkell

Feds just shut Job Corps down.

I am currently managing an intake program for youth crisis shelter... The local job corps is sending dozens of young people our way next week... on it goes...

They are on the attack:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/labor-dept-suspend-job-corps-centers-put-students-danger-cost-taxpayers-1-7b
but have been for many years:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-job-corps-failure-1524432262

The program needs overhauling but I imagine this is just a way to cut support for poor people. Some of the stats looking troubling and could be but without context are murky:
- The low graduation rate might be really bad OR it could be that by just being in the program the kids are more likely to be employable or receive positive opportunities, which pull them out of the program.
- Also, it ignores that our peak years to engage in crime/deviance are our late teens. While this program doesn't turn the kids into little robots and undo all the aspects of their environment, maybe it reduces crime, which is supposedly why we pay the police more than most teachers and professors. It seems like we enjoy investing in crime prevention as a society?
- And, it ignores the benefits of just housing at risk kids and the strain this is going to put on places like @Too Frank To Fred

Job Corps needs an overhaul, but not in this manner. JobCorps has blue and red protectors in congress and the late George Foreman was a graduate, so it'd be hard for Trump to just kill it outright. Where were the dems in Biden's first two years to make changes to this? Where the fuck is their Project 2025? Dems need to stop simply protecting institutions, but start remaking them in order to protect them.

2 other whiffs of bullshit I caught off of that Fox article. First one is Biden paused business at TWO of the job centers during his admin. OK but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to scrap all 123. Let's play whataboutism - so there are some problems at some police stations...let's shut all those down too I guess.

The other whopper they're trying to launder is about how fraught it is for these workers in these programs. I'm not suggesting that they aren't exploited and haven't been abused but I'm wondering if the abuse they're describing occurred at the job centers or the minimum wage jobs the article suggest they routinely wind up placed at? That point seemed intentionally murky but they could just be papering over how bad it is to work in entry level jobs.

Democrats just keep moving to the right. Instead of reaching out to Gen Z, they had Kamala touring with the Cheneys. There needs to be a new party. If the DNC didn’t screw over Bernie in 2016, we never would have had Trump. I don’t expect Democrats to learn from their mistakes or do anything meaningful to oppose MAGA policy.

Moving to Europe for grad school is becoming less of a dream and more of a goal as the days go by.

Damn I actually went through Job Corps from 17-18. I knew I wasnt going to college. I dropped out and went there and got my welding certs/training/GED free and was able to transition into getting a job and a place to live (they gave you a couple thousand when you complete to help get you started).

There was issues back then with it but ultimately it was the best decision I made and I learned a trade and got a good reality check from it.

His base will still support him no matter what. He could SA a child on national TV and they will do all the mental gymnastics they are so great at to somehow make him the victim.

Remember, 100% of jurors found him guilty of sexual assault before he took office.
