Not really. Machado was nominated by Marco Rubio and a few other Republicans. She has been openly pro MAGA for a long time even openly asking for a military intervention in Venezuela by the US under Trump. Anyone who is a bit familiar with Latin American politics thinks her getting the prize is a joke. Yes she opposes an authoritarian president, but in her politics she has neither been against violence nor has she been very pro democracy (she has backed a military coup against a democratically elected president and she has recently applauded Trump for his extra judicial killings of Venezuelans)

Basically choosing her was a way of not choosing Trump without really displeasing his team.

I get that it will always be a problem.

Was pointing to the fact in 2020 when Trump was focused on his rallies over the early stages of the epidemic, he said COVID was solved after he mentioned injecting bleach and his followers listened and parroted it. Much like they did when they argued (earlier on) that COVID was a Democratic hoax that would disappear after the 2020 election.

I havent heard about this one but it is scary. I have colleagues in academia that will not travel to the US for conferences anymore due to background checks etc. And they are both US citizens and europeans.
