Midtop Cupsoles
« on: November 11, 2024, 08:24:30 AM »
Recovering from an ankle sprain and looking for something more supportive. I've been skating adidas aloha supers for the last couple of years, and love them. Before that I was mostly skating 3st.003 (I had to google that). Both have thin, flexible cupsoles with soft uppers that fit my feet snugly.

I can't do half cabs, or really any kind of vulcanized shoe. I think the first emerica Hsu's were the last mids I wore and liked. The later g6 ones felt pretty terrible.

Any recommendations?

I’m currently skating the NB# 440 mid v2. I love them so far.

I'll just add the potentially minor note that I don't wear skate shoes except for when I'm skating. So, I honestly don't mind if they're not mega comfortable for walking, etc. Will check out those 440's.

Another vote for 440v2 high. I put Superfeet run cushion insoles in mine and the comfort + support is the best I’ve been able to get in a shoe that I still want to skate and don’t mind the look of

440v2 high
480 high
OG Adidas Tyshawn
Fastbreaks
Zhaba Mids
Accel Slim Mid
Adidas Pro Shell ADV
IPath Grasshopper

440v2 high is the correct answer, tho the fastbreaks or OG tyshawns are close behind.

EDIT Forgot to add:Nike SB React Leo - cupsole/vulcanized hybrid construction

Probably the most comfortable stock shoe out there that isn't bulky. Upper is not as supportive as say, the 440 tho.

Agreed 440v2 is the correct answer. Such a good shoe at a great price

One more vote for the Adidas Tyshawn Pro (not the Tyshawn Low, or the 2shawn). There are a few differences between the Tyshawn Pro and the Tyshawn Pro Remastered, but both of those skated the same for me. The ones with a suede upper skated better for me than the ones with a leather upper (suede seems to catch griptape better for me), so I just repurposed the leather ones as everyday/work shoes.

They're not perfect, but they've been the best skate shoes for me for the last few years. If iPath ever makes an all black Grasshopper with a suede upper and a gum outsole, that'll replace the Tyshawn Pros for me.
RIP Ben Raemers

These aren't SB. But. They're pretty flexible, comfy, leather seems durable, and they have a nice wide toe box. I swapped the insoles in mine and they're great.

I've skated the OG TJ's a ton and I always forget to tell people they are pretty narrow.  I've liked them, stable, the mid actually helps.  If I was to try something else it would be the 440v2, 480, or leo's shoe, I don't think anyone has mentioned those, even the ishod's look pretty wild but ankle friendly.

the tyshawn remastered is actually a good shoe. defs considering getting a pair again. the 440v2 is abit narrow compared to the tyshawns. really wish they kept the toe area abit more square like v1 (440).

They make the 440v2 hi in a wide, wasn't able to get a pair in my size so went with the 440v2 low wide. Might want to check into the wide hi.

In terms of Cupsole Mids I've skated the Vans Zahba Mids, Converse Fast Break Pros. Rate the Fast Breaks - wider toe box and little break in time. Zahba's are very stiff and the cupsole isn't as cushy and supportive as expected. Also a tight toe box and they gave me blisters in the first week or so. They are holding up well however.

Looking forward to an NB 1010 mid or hightop! Very supportive but also decent boardfeel once broken in.

Re Highs I like the NB 440. Nice middle ground. I also like the Vans Crockett Highs with the Wafflecup sole. I'd buy a mid shoe with this sole!

The Ishod 2 doesn't 'look' like a mid, but it is the same height as the Tyshawn OG/Remastered.

I got the 440 v2 highs, looking forward to trying them out on board.

Never would have considered the ishod 2's. They look so clunky online, but saw a video and the construction is super unique and interesting. I haven't had a pair of Nike skate shoes since the ecue's, which I honestly loved at the time. I'm a sucker for a tech story, but don't generally vibe with nike.

thanks all!

The Rowan 2 is not super mid-top ish but higher than a low top. Great shoe with many colors on clearance.

Felt nice and stable too, love the nice thick collar and tongue. Good resistance from bagging out, even after the supper was shredded and the sole was dead.

Been switching between NB 508s and Rowan 2's for my last few pairs of skate shoes. 508s are great, light and comfy, but seem to die quickly once they go. Those Rowans tho... i built spots in em, hiked in em, skated em a ton, they lasted most of a season with daily damage inflicted. Upper was shredded, sole was blown through, and i still felt like they wanted to be skated more. Love those tanky guys, highly recommend

Are the As-1 or Fastbreak wider?

Also Adidas Pro Models are an option. I've got some that I wear off board and skated them once and was pleasantly surprised that they felt wider than Sambas and have pretty nice board feel. If I wasn't a disgusting NB hoarder I'd skate some.

In the same size the Fastbreak is both a little wider and a little longer than the AS-1 - especially in the toebox area

Same story as OP, recovering from sprain and looked for something supportive and confident, was recommended the 440 v2s and they were a gamechanger. Absolutely hate how they look tho, so been spraypainting the shit out of them, but that might not be an issue for you. They way they fit your foot is awesome and no other shoe I tried (Dunks, Blazers, 440 v1, Fastbreak) came anywhere close.

Imo vulc with an insole that matches your feet > stock cupsole.

As gimmicky as they seem i do like the new footprint fluidx insoles. But everyones foot is different. I encourage everyone to buy a few different types of insoles and see what works for you.

I get what you’re saying, but I put insoles I like in supportive cupsoles and it’s made my feet feel 10 years younger. I’ll still skate vulcs occasionally when I get the itch but nothing beats the comfort and support of a good insole and cupsole pairing IMO
