One time I showed up at the spot and the curb had been "waxed" using a Speed Stick which was also discarded in the same place.

I've never liked watching Penny footage. The skill he had isn't in question, but his style and outfits always looked dumb to me.

Now that's what this thread is all about. I respect your immense bravery.

Ditto. 26 pages of popular opinions, then this.
[close]
I totally stand behind this statement.
[close]

Don't get me wrong because I'm not trying to be edgy or anything - I understand why people love him and his skating, but it never really did anything for me. I did get into skating after his peak though, so I didn't have the experience of seeing his footage when it just came out.
His ability and skill dropped off dramatically after his peak. So I can see your first thought being that he’s overrated and that’s hard to adjust later on.

Snowboarding is just skateboarding for people who’s dads own the dealership.

Snowboarding is skateboarding for people who live where it’s not flat as fuck.

IMUO all skate shoes should be high tops and I was a fool that could've prevented a bunch of rolled ankles for not wearing them in the past.
[close]

If you’re into science and studies there’s no proof that high tops prevent ankle sprains or rolls. There’s even some studies that suggest a low top is better since you have better range of motion and the shoes usually weigh less. One benefit I can see with high tops is if the board were to hit you in the ankle area then it offers some added protection.
[close]
Well I found one paper that studied 20 basketball players (10 in lo's, 10 in hi's) for an undisclosed amount of time and even though there were 18 more injuries with low tops they conclude that it's not significant enough of a difference to come to any conclusion. Of course it isn't, the sample size was too small to come to any conclusion from the start. This is the kind of "science" publicly available on the subject... lol.

All I know is I still can't flick without the support of hi tops without pain because of rolling my ankle in lo tops..
[close]

We could definitely recruit shoes and gear users and get a much better sample size.  Anecdotally I feel less ankle pain when flicking if I wear a high top, and both of my sprains have been in low tops
[close]

I feel more stable with a supportive mid but don’t really like skating in high tops personally. I think there’s definitely some other contributing factors to ankle rolls like size, weight, bone/ligament strength, trick selection, spot or obstacle etc. Anyone in medical field or physical therapy care to share some knowledge?

Glad to hear first hand experience and that it’s improved for you personally, @bob george what shoes have you been skating in?

Blazer Mids. Highest "mid" I've ever seen. They used to make blazer chukkas, they were great and a legitimate mid - not sure why they stopped that. I won't skate another shoe unless the blazers don't exist - i've never had any other shoe last as long as these do too! Like, the shoe doesn't fall apart at all. Usually I stop skating them because the sole has gone a bit smooth, but the rest of the shoe is generally fine (worn, but not fucked).

Crazy to hear this after the only pair of blazer mids I’ve skated I burned through in two days.

That said i had the lounge mountain blazer chukkas and I really liked that shoe

yeah I used to rock blazers pretty much exclusively because they used to just never blow out, but I've noticed since a few years ago, probably due to the economic forces that render consumer products shitty everywhere, that they get thrashed pretty quickly. So that high price tag that comes with blazers ain't worth it for me anymore

Prefab parks don’t get enough credit. They’re cheaper. They last pretty long all things considered. And some prefab obstacles like a good old fashion fun box are rarely done right in concrete these days. A prefab mini ramp is the best.

Cheaper yes but they need way more maintenance and this is where it sucks because cities don't do it correctly (when they do it)

IMO skateboarding on metal modules feels so bad

This trend of basketball is lame. I got into skating to get away from that shit. Now there's a hoop in every private park. If I have to see one more jump shot at the primitive park...

I love those trex ledges that are always in these

Sometimes there's just comfort in a prefab park

If you’re watching jock skaters in their private parks frequently enough to be annoyed by their basketball hoops I don’t have much sympathy for you.

They can have their hoops I'm just more of a Billy Marks ping pong balls kinda guy

I think the winter jeep hat is styling. Also rock a dark blue one if you be doing dirt at night. Navy blew everything really.  The jeep hat is like the cloak in that bigoted anti Hermione story Harry Potter. When a cop shines the light on you on the track sides they see right through you.
That’s why so many 90s 2000s ne writer rocks both styles of jeep hat.

I mean don’t you like Klinger from mash? I love that guy.

[close]

People should start doing slide-to-powerslide combos. That shit is excellent.

I am not sure if this is exactly what you meant, but Shinpei Ueno (the guy who directed Lenz III, runs Tightbooth, and skates for Evisen) does a lot of these slide to powerslide or powerslide to slide + trick kinda combos. Unfortunately, I am not a professional White Claw drinker, so I don’t know the names of like half the tricks he’s doing, but I want to try and guess that this will kinda scratch the itch you’re looking for. Personally, I’m all for this type of stuff, but I get that it’s not for everybody.

There are only tricks, dividing them arbitrarily into ‘legit’ or ‘circus’ or whatever is mainly based on how much you care what other people think of your skating.

Just to play devils advocate, if I were the last person on earth  there are still tricks I wouldn’t do based on how dumb or distasteful I find them. It’s not about what other people think as much as it is how I see myself.

Of course, everyone has their own taste.
I think a lot of ‘cool’ technical tricks look awkward and ass myself.

But personal preference doesn’t make anything more legit’ than anything else.
