I skate regular foot, but if I see a big patch of ice, or maybe I'm wearing socks on a slick hardwood floor, and I run and slide across it,
I do it goofy foot.
The first time I realized it was on a big sheet of ice in my work parking lot.
I ran and slid all the way across it and when I got to the other side I wondered "why did I do that switch/goofy?"
So I reset and ran at it again to try sliding across regular foot and man I ate shit after sliding like 2ft, I had no balance.
I guess I'm regular foot across all board sports but goofy foot only in ice sliding. What up with that?

Is that normal? Does anyone else switch stances across any different...like...instances of sideways locomotion?

I see you, and I am with you.

I pretend that it’s the reason I suck so much at flip tricks. Dang confuscating my body all up not knowing’ which way is what now.

Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

I'm so over curb dancing like board to hurricane to febble shit. I always found it cheating using rails to do those tricks. Also rails are overrated.

Some people are regular on a skateboard and goofy on a snowboard (and vice versa).
It was weird to me at first but it happens and it works well for those people
I know numerous people who surf regular and skate goofy or vice versa. All of them do both well but have no particular switch advantage that I've noticed. It's fascinating to me

A kid I knew growing up skated street one stance and vert/transition in the other stance. No real reason for it apart from he just felt most comfortable skating that way.

Ben Degros videos could be more concise

His last installment was pretty boring but I still like to see him rifle off flat ground tricks in his enchanted tennis court while beaming to the camera in child-like glee.

If anything, industry Ben sometimes sounds a little big for his britches, but that's probably just envy bubbling up from someone the same age who never did anything with their life.

Fort Miley is a combination of three skate phenomena: 1) the mediocre spot that is near where pros live and where a magazine’s offices are located, 2) a spot where difficulty of tricks isn’t readily apparent to people who have never been there, and 3) a spot that photographs reasonably well and offers contrast to the primarily urban locales in most skate media.

But yeah, I totally agree with your take.

you should go check it out, if only because it's on a cool trail close to great views of the beach and the presidio. i also think it's up there with the brooklyn banks in terms of interesting, "how did someone design this so perfectly for skateboarding?" architecture that's been skated since the 80s and you can see how it influenced skateboarding's progression. but yeah it's fucking hard to skate

This is interesting to hear.
As a kid in the midwest it was definitely a spot we'd talk about when it came up in videos, mostly trying to decide if it's a street spot (forest spot?) or is it the world's shittiest skatepark? How tall is it? We'd try to determine how tall it was based on the trees in the background but could never come to a consensus. But yeah, a lot of "what the fuck is that place?"

I always thought , man, after the second or third time kicking my board off the building I'd be over it.

it's an old military fort, there are a fair number of recognizable spots at decommissioned military bases in SF

If you ever find yourself at Fort Warden outside of Port Townsend, Washington, you can find a spot which is nearly identical to Fort Miley, presumably built at the same time and from similar plans, except it lacks the large flat sections of concrete, hence it’s mostly not skateable. They filmed “An Officer And A Gentleman” there.

I first went to a mountain on an old Burton with no tail kick and quickly learned I would leaf and favor regular. This was around when checkered pig had just started and half pipes had hits.
March or April something or other. Last week of Sunday river.
I had taken some runs, but the trail is too skinny. Then I blasted off the end of the lit half pipe fully out of control fakie and landed right between two boulders.

Fort Miley was worth the tourism trip, imo, for two reasons,

I like gawking at big concrete structures, especially abandoned ones

The niche of skating a pyramid on top of an abandoned base is some Wild Wasteland shit

Aside from that, you gotta be fucked up to get a real trick there. Those safety rails are insane, anyone who makes it to the top rope is actually insane. Dern Brothers style recap would be sick for that spot.

Yes, agreed. I was trying to remember the other "skate history-esque" segment while I was typing that. Some background lore about the function and development would be interesting to hear as well.

I am completely fine with Kader not putting out tons of footage. I like what he does put out, he's still out there filming and skating, he honestly seems more self aware and grounded than a lot of pros his age that put out more footage.

Ft. Miley is super fun and 95% of SF spots are so much harder to skate than they look, but you can still have a great time there dorking around doing manuals on the top of the pyramid.

We may see a resurgence in people buying Powell.

DLXSF basalt boards are about $15 more than a Powell flight.

Flights seem to still be made in the US, not sure about Deluxe. That might account for the price difference. Flight seems to be stronger too, according to preliminary rumor.

if the new shapes Powell is rolling out soon (shorter WB) are any good, they might just catch on thanks to the shitshow the economy is lumbering towards.

I picked up a new deck last week, I was looking at the DBX decks until I saw they were $120.
Even if it lasts twice as long, that's still only a roughly $20 savings over buying two normal decks.

A standard deck lasts me on average probably a month on the low end and maybe 3 months on the really high end. I get bored of decks though, I like to try a new shape, get a new graphic, get new grip, etc. every month or two.
Unless it was a significant savings, I kinda don't want to skate the same deck for 3 to 6 months.

I was saying this in the gear thread, but the thing these skateboards always miss is that skaters by and large enjoy purchasing and setting up new skateboards. I understand there are board breakers who destroy a deck every session, and things like the Flight Deck are definitely good for them, but I think most skaters who can afford a basalt deck are happy to drop $50-75 every couple of months to get a new toy.
