I wear aftermarket insoles (on shoes and boots that need them) for my knees, not my feet.

No amount of feet toughening will absorb shock to your knees like a decent amount of foam in a midsole or insole. Your older self will thank you if you take some effort lessen the pile driving action of femur on tibia.

This aftermarket insole shit is almost entirely a scam and you all just need stronger feet.

Just reading this collapsed my arches. This opinion is a real contender!

What I’m hearing is that we need Super…. Feet….
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

I have oddly strong ankles, feet, and legs because my main activity, rock climbing, requires it at the level I'm at. You're often pulling on a dime sized sliver of rock with a single leg to do a hard movement and you build foot strength over time. I've done PT for various issues, I'm only 175 at 6 foot 3, and am strong in any barbell lower body movement (2x bodyweight deadlift off the couch never training it).

That all has fuck all to do with insoles. Skating is a ton of jumping and landing/eccentric in weird asymmetrical positions. Having some arch support helps keep my ankles and knees supported during that. If you're skating a few hours and battling a trick you're popping and landing dozens of times in a strange position vs lifting in a fixed stance or running in a straight, repetitive line. For me it's made a big difference over weeks and months in terms of having zero joint issues, no foot, ankle, or knee soreness post session, and just general comfort.

Skate brand insoles are trash and most excessive padding is a bandaid. Most amateurs aren't even skating shit with the impact an aging Reynolds has.

I want to be clear that I'm not saying you should take the insoles out of your shoes, I am saying that buying FP insoles is silly because AFAIK there is no modern skate shoe which doesn't include a decent foam insole.

Some are strong, some aren't. Anyone that's been doing it for at least a year has some pretty tough grip strength though.

I don't wear anything with a logo on it, I'm not a walking billboard.
Most of them look bad and they mean nothing about quality.
For most people it's just ostentatious.

Same with tatoos, I'm not a canvas.
I've never seen someone tatooed where I thought it looked good or better than without it.

I know hating on Rollerblading was beat into my head as a young skater.

But this day and age rollerblading, especially the 4 wheel skates (like the ones you see in roller derby) is way more in style.

Secretly I still hate on roller skaters. Just pick up a damn skateboard and learn how to Ollie up a curb. It’s not easy and you will fall and you will bleed. That’s the point. It’s hard.

I’ve seen fools get absolutely smoked on rollerblades. For a good minute they were doing some insane shit on those things. They’ve always had my respect.

I actually went to school with a pro street style blader in the late 90s …dude rode for rollerblade and got pretty big in the 2000s.  He was cool as shit and dude got buck on the shit I seen him in.

Maybe skaters had a problem with them back then because their whole style and presentation was in essence from skateboarding (from the magazines to videos to music and clothing ).  That’s what bugged a lot of my homies but I never cared for people got down.

I also worked with the Ryan Nyquists younger brother who was a street style bmx’r and he used to tell me how much skater got bummed whenver they  showed up at spots

Same. There was no rivalry with them in my hometown. We’d often end up seeing each other at spots and hyping each other up. It was fun to watch them hit rails we wouldn’t even look at. Those dudes partied hard too, we would just drink beer and smoke weed but they would posse up at the house party candy flipping and shit.

Definitely. After I quick skateboarding in 2009 I started blading (from 2011 to 2013) and it was really fun. Basics are much easier than skateboarding. I was sliding ledges and flat rails in no time and doing air grabs on quarter pipes, which I never did with a skateboard. You are bodied more frequently than in skateboarding, where you just bail and walk. Although I could do tons of tricks and it was fun, I never connected with blading in the same way I connected with skateboarding.

Rollerblades weren’t cool in 2008 and I really doubt any rollerblader still at it in 2025 believes they are cool.

Fuck, how many of us are rollerbladers?

I was in to action sports anything as a kid, so when I came across a pair of aggressive inline blades on clearance at sports authority I hoped on it. A few other skaters at my local also dabbled inline. I definitely got better at inline faster than I did skating, but skateboarding was and still has been the end all be all.

I had some rollerblades when I was like 11 and it was great fun the first time I tried it (because it was so easy for someone that had skated on ice) and then got pretty boring the second time and there maybe never was a third time before my mom gave them to the kid next doors because I never used them.

I would have gone the inline route if I had access. Wanted a pair of K2s or Oxygens. But those were expensive compared to the skateboard someone had indefinitely loaned me. Inline would be more popular if it were more accessible. Not so easy to pass on old skates.

Also the time cops chased us out of an unfinished skatepark at night, all the inline guys got caught because they had to change before they could drive.

Crazy to hear the skills carry over, when I see people skating quads at the park it freaks me out, it looks terrifying.
Especially when they skate ramps and have their feet pointing sideways, I'd have to have an ambulance on standby before I tried that.
And I don't understand how bailing works. It looks like you just have to go all in on every attempt.
I'd definitely have to wear knee pads.

Mad respect for the roller skaters, they're easily my favorite non-skateboarders at the skatepark.

Oh yea the knee pads are essential, I'd be fucked without them. My crew is a mix of skateboarders and quad skaters so it was an easy transition to make with friends there to teach me the basics
