I miss Skateline NBD. I honestly laughed at some jokes and the clips they showed were often a good chance to watch parts that maybe you missed or even to get to know other skaters.

I just  watched Pretty Sweet for the first time and....I mean, I don't even know what to say. I heard through the grapevine that it was "pretty bad" but HOLY SHIT I did not expect the levels of cringe and pain I felt watching it.

Call me a hipster but it's amazing how indie artists can create something beautiful, raw, authentic and LA culture just destroys it when they touch it. Hollywood and overproduction always has to taint everything in the area.

I don't understand how every now and then I'll hear someone say "actually it was pretty good".

I feel kinda bad because I'm not a movie maker or artist myself so it may be fucked up to rant about how much I didn't like something, but I'm just wondering if anyone else agrees.

The skating was pretty good I guess and certain things were filmed well, but I was distracted by the god awful song choices, B roll, and cringe.

Sir this is the unpopular opinion thread

The youtube comments were 95% positive, and my initial search to find current or old threads about it on Slap didn't yield much for some reason. I just did it again and found the 2012 thread shitting on it lol. Still, I sometimes still see positive reviews pop up around me.

You're right, the thread below makes me feel less alone.

I like Pretty Sweet and don't understand what's so awful about it.
Marc Johnson skating to Bowie, Sean Malto's part is fucking epic (and the Justice song kicks ass), aside from that Fitz and the Tantrums song I think it has a pretty fucking banger soundtrack (Suicidal Tendencies, NWA, Justice, Bowie, Beasties, Sleigh Bells) and the goofy "cringe" and sketches have always been a part of Girl videos going all the way back to Goldfish.

Friendly reminder that this is the unpopular opinion thread.

I'd rather listen to The Misfits than Dream Theater.
But when I'm sitting down to watch a skate video, I'd rather watch Wade Desarmo than T-Funk.

Wade's on some Teddy Pendergrass shit, yo. Way to smooth. Dream Theater is like every freestyler that isn't Rodney. They all do crazy technical stunts and nobody fucking cares.

I'd rather listen to the Misfits than Dream Theater but when I sit down to watch a skate video, I don't wanna hear either.

Except the QS Top 10 doesn't have a host making jokes...

I miss Skateline NBD too though. It's weird because Gary's presence in skate videos is annoying usually, but I liked him as the host for Skateline.

The celebrity parts were unnecessary. They straight up redid the Owen Wilson bit with Will Arnett and the Jack Black annoying filmer thing was brutally unfunny.

Obviously some really great skateboarding in that video, but some really weird choices when it comes to everything else

When Jack Black said "Malto, do this one for the skate gods".... I felt that
If you see offensive comments, just let it go into one eye and let it out of the other eye, no tears and not sadness or anger.

Owen Wilson’s cameo worked well because it was unexpected and out of left field and made you double take. Unfortunately lightning dosent strike twice.. and barely gets off the ground when it’s an over-the-top personality like Jack Black or worse Jonah “I used to skate” Hill

The Owen Wilson thing happened at a time where there was still magic in the world, and people could believe.

1st time I watched Sorry as a kid I thought to myself, wtf does Johnny Rotten have to do with skateboarding? Funniest bit was him dissing Ali's gear low key calling him a poser.

He didn't even slightly call him a poser in the Sorry video.
He said:

"he's brillian' on a skateboard and a complete plonk off one, lay off the punk gear my mate, you know?     ... you look like a gerl on yer skateboard when ye wear that stuff"

I had the same thought though - clearly it was just a pay day and an excuse for Rotten to get drunk. Seemed like he was enjoying himself and the commentary added a good bit to the vid.

Foundation is or was involved in some sketchy shit.

I heard an odd story from a friend who had a friend who rode for Foundation and went on a few trips in the late 2000s. He claimed Foundation had contacts for sex workers across multiple cities "for the team" or something like that.
Then there's that video (Tentacles of Destruction?) where Heath Josh Beagle are engaging in some weird shit very much orchestrated by Foundation, including procuring 14 year-old girls as "dates". Yuck

I've always joked that Foundation isn't a real company just based on the fact that I've never seen a Foundation deck in the wild but what was going on over there?

Long time ago 95-96ish  I skated with a few characters in South Carolina Ethan Fowler was amongst them.  My gf at the time was 17 and I was 18, suffice it to say she cheated on me with Ethan Fowler, I was pissed about it at the time.

Foundation and many other team's that have cruised through the south eastern area, I wouldn't say creeps so much as sketchy sometimes homophobic nonsense. I'm only speaking from the few interactions I've had over the year's, call it right place right area to see these guys at random spots and kicked it with them.

I swear I read an interview where someone told a story about Leo Romero posting on Craigslist in attempts to get laid. Not exactly the same thing but similar energy (if true).

Ben DeGros is an industry Psy-Op to get us to care about gear more than we otherwise would and thus seek out specific measurements in products we wouldn't likely buy if we weren't aware of the nuances.

Is “this board has medium kicks, mellow-to-medium concave, a wheelbase, and pairs well with indendepent and thunder trucks, now here’s 3 minutes of me skating and giving commentary on my flatground” really what an industry plant would do? Zach Dowling is more what you’d expect a shill to be

No way. If everyone suddenly had gear madness companies would have to start making their decks in a way wider variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate everyone knowing exactly what they require from their deck.
They'd rather pump out like 5 different shapes to a customer base that doesn't give a shit than have a bunch of people going "I can't skate your decks because you don't make anything with a 6.875" nose".

It’s great that people understand more about their equipment, but I think people developed skateboard madness earlier. As a result of Ben and Schmidt
