I have a buddy who has a good heart but terrible form on everything he tries. I used to give tips but now I just bite my tongue constantly and just let him do his thing.

Im comfortable with the fact I’m not a great teacher, I usually don’t say anything to anyone, and when asked I fumble around with some bullshit about the “pocket” or something, I can’t even tell you how I do things

Might as well weigh in. A couple months ago a guy at the park gave me advice on backside grinds on transition. It completely changed my life. I’ve frontside grinded some decent stuff, various deep ends and whatnot but I’ve always been deathly afraid of backside grinds. I have them now, the guy just gave me the missing piece that makes them seem like nothing.

Very appreciative of that guy. It wasn’t completely unsolicited, we were chatting and I mentioned his pivot fakie was cool and it eventually led to the trick tip. I’m open to random advice though. It’s my choice to utilize it or not.

what gets me is when guys who are clearly mediocre start nagging younger skaters. watched a 30 year old get mad at some 14 year old kid about the way he was trying to pop shuv the 5 stair at my local, while he couldn't boardslide a flat bar and had a few nose stall variations on transition. It's a pop shuv it, he'll figure it out, and a tip is nice but when you're getting mad at the kid for not committing despite the fact that he's been trying the trick for 5 minutes and you're visibly frustrated with him while delivering the tip, it just kills the vibe.

This.  I have a "friend" like this (In his 30's).  He also cannot help himself but to give me advice on how to do tricks that he cannot do himself.  It is extremely annoying. He's a very mediocre skater who gives off strong grumpy vibes that will kill any session.

I feel like the guideline for unsolicited advice is probably somewhere close to,

it's ok to give unsolicited advice if you aren't doing it in such a way that mocks, misguides, or impedes the skater trying the trick.

Bad Example: My first anecdote, where the guy is bothering another skater with a "trick tip" under the guise of sharing knowledge, but is really just talking down to the skater because he's having a bad session.

Positive Example: An older guy at the park that used to be my local showed me where to put my backfoot on tre flips. He was an established local who was really good, and said something like "hey, you might be able to get the rotation easier if you put your feet like this." I tried the placement and it worked.

the difference between the two seems to be that one person was straightforward and kind in their approach, while the other was scrambled and became frustrated. So maybe it's best not to give unsolicited advice unless you're confident that you can be helpful and genuine in doing so.

What do y'all think?

On the flip side, I get the warm fuzzies when someone asks me how to do a trick I just landed.

I got really hyped last weekend when one of the newer rippers skated the 3 stair hubba for the first time. I gave him some encouragement and showed how I did it and he got it within a few tries.

Showed some newbies how to use a skate tool recently.  They didn't need a trick tip, just a little encouragement.   Skate on everybody

I think people should be more welcome to trick tips among strangers. It provides the opportunity to meet more people and make friends, and trick tips are always good.

Just want to say, I fucken hate trick tips. Please let me suck in peace

More often than not, it's a tip for a trick I've done before, by someone who's never done it. I would rather just some words of encouragement. It does the same job of opening the door to conversation and connections, without making me hate your guts.

ON THE SUBJECT OF TRICKTIPS! And I've said the same thing about Ben Degros, I get it, you watch youtube, you watch reels. We both skate, We get the same shit pushed in our algorithm. Don't come up to me with some shit you just saw michie brusco say 2 days.

Curious to know what he told you that made them click. I always have to cross lock otherwise my front shoulder will over rotate. Always wanted a solid heelside back5050 on coping

My problem was being afraid to get the back truck on. I would do these little bag lady things with the front truck. I was afraid of overshooting it onto the deck and falling forward into the transition. His advice was so simple, I honestly feel stupid typing it out but he just told me to imagine a small extension on the transition, basically to imagine the coping is a little further up the quarter than I'm shooting for. Once the wheel at your heel gets over the coping, you're pretty much locked in and a slam is pretty rare. I didn't realize how safe it was. Crosslock is kind of the way to go.

If you already have them and can crosslock, this advice is most likely useless to you, but it totally changed my life after 30 years of being afraid of it.

I am very disappointed that having a subscription to Thrasher gets you the mag a week or two AFTER the cover is posted on socials and it shows up in skateshops/bookstores.

I feel like I’m being punished for something.
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

It’s always been late, it was way worse before when we relied on print and they had it on the newsstands at least a week prior….

Mine sit around for weeks anyways, I kinda like revisiting this stuff….you know they make no dough on print… we’re lucky we have it.

The “trick tip” thing: I was like 16, was trying cabs down a small 2 flat 2 at Kona, I could cab drops, but nothing with distance. Dude rolls up and goes “don’t dig for an angle, jump straight up and try to keep that leading shoulder open when you’re landing. If nothing else get your elbow behind your hip, it’ll help, I swear…” it worked. I LOVE stuff like this, even unsolicited, when it’s non invasive and truly insightful.

But I hated the park “trick tip guide” just fucking roaming around doing fakie big flips or whatever all day but only landing with one foot on the board every try, that vibe, like: “no dude put your feet like THIS…”
Like, fuck you dude, I know how to nollie flip, I just got here I’m warming up, leave me alone, you’re WAYY too extroverted, fuck off…

im probably lying

As a mainstream brand it crashed and burned within two years, how the whole thing seemingly still thrives, I don't know.., I don't think we want to know...

ABP, but while we're in the unpopular opinion thread....The magazine is way better now than it ever has been.....

I personally don't mind unsolicited advice from strangers if the person is respectful about it and can consistently land the trick that's giving me struggles.
Hell, if I see you consistently landing a trick that's giving me a hard time you probably won't have to give unsolicited advice, I'll probably roll up and ask you for advice.

I have no problem with strangers approaching me to ask for trick tips, I'm happy to (try to) help.

Didn’t know which part to quote, but they also embraced/pivoted to online video where Transworld didn’t. Taylor Kirby talks about it in his Bunt inteview that Transworld didn’t want to host any Shep Dawg related thing even though they were all in the same city/region; whereas Thrasher was down.

I wish this were talked about more because it’s so crazy that Thrasher won out over everything. Perhaps it helped that they have no corporate overlords either. I’d take a “what really happened to Transworld” article/videopiece..

Yeah that’s exactly correct, skateboarder,TWS and Big Brother were owned corporately, so they never pivoted…. The skateboard magazine wasn’t bankrolled the same way…..Thrasher the print mag I bet operates at a loss but they’re making up money somewhere else….

While we’re on the topic….the mag is better than it’s ever been….

VillagePM is actually pretty sick and so is Thanyan Costa. Just because their aesthetics are a little too advanced and arty Euro for the average oldhead slappy authority doesn't make them bad. I think it's pretty great that they're really going for something fresh and I'd love to see them succeed, even though I could never wear them.

There is something so tranquil about it… perfect Christmas video.

Also, it was amazing to hear on Jeremy Wray’s Bunt episode that he ollied the water tower on the same day him and Ty we’re filming Starting Point.

I kinda hesitate to put this opinion out there, but here goes:

With all gratitude and respect that Antwuan is sober, healthy, and skating these days... his constant instagram stories of corny affirmations, pictures of his gym, cliched hustle-culture platitudes, and footage of his church pastor is becoming insufferable. And, to be honest, each skatepark clip of yet another noseslide heelflip bring diminishing returns.

Again, all preferable to Antwuan going down, and he should do whatever makes him happy and fulfilled. But dude's content is boring as hell these days. One could even say "Neen-esque".
Warm Up Zone. Let's watch some skateboarding videos.
