I just don't think anyone was saying "well Phelps said this about this" in conversation in the 90s.

As a 90s' teen skate rat I'm pretty sure none of us even knew who the fuck Phelps was.
It would have been more like "Thrasher says" than "Phelps says".

I don't think any of us paid any attention to writers, editors, and photographers until the Big Brother SHIT era when all those guys kinda stepped out in front of the camera.

for better or worse gh has filled the void of the phelper
a polarising, funny personality whose opinions generally echo that of the core community

in 2025 it only makes sense that this is in the form of a youtuber/twitch streamer

also, i can almost guarantee the old guys he pisses off these days would have held  phelps word as gospel in the hellride era , which i think  only adds to my point .. in 10 years gh devotees gonna be doing the same to whoevers next up - provided they survive the groyper wars of 2028

Joa having the same cred as Phelps is laughable...Also grew up in the 90s and am not a fan of his videos but don't care for him, what either way he ends up in skateboarding, the scene has gotten so big that I can enjoy it without ever interacting with any of his content.    The only people who i think deserve to be punched in the face are literal nazi's like Nick Fuentes and Richard spencer.  Joa or any opinions like his does not deserve any physical violence
[close]
If anything Joa has more. Phelps didn't really matter to anyone until KOTR, and even then I don't think people really cared about his opinions that much. Like, go fast and do scary stuff was a thing before Phelps came along.

phelps edited Thrasher for 26 years you fucking person.

Those 26 years in which Phelps ran Thrasher has influenced skateboarding, good or bad, far beyond anything else. Phelps himself didn't really put himself out there as the face of Thrasher until later in that career, but Thrasher dictated what was cool or not in skateboarding for decades, and Phelps dictated what was in Thrasher. Almost every trend you can think of became one because that's what Thrasher decided to elevate.

I don't listen to Gifted Hater, I don't do the Nine Club or the Bunt either, just not my thing, but the idea any Youtuber in a sea of youtubers has even a fraction of the cultural impact that the primary skateboarding magazine for 40 years, and the last standing for the last few years, has had, seems ridiculous.

youtubers, streamers and such should not be respected.
i won't care about some dude sitting in front of his pc recording some lame ass youtube videos giving HIS opinions on stuff. i don't care. i can have my own opinion, i don't need yours. i also don't care for GH. i think watching these fucking endless videos is a waste of time. comparing him to phelps is peak ridiculuousness.
but you do you. go ahead and keep watching if you enjoy it.

Did Phelps ever film a full part?

and? so what?
i've had my profile since 2012 with 5.8k posts
you've had your profile since 2019 with 2.4k posts
extrapolate these numbers and then reevaluate again what point you're trying to make.

phelps was a skater back when filming parts was a completely different feat. so hardly comparable to now, where you can pull out your phone and film shit in best quality and publish it online within seconds. so again i don't get what you are saying. then as someone already pointed out he was editor in chief for nearly thirty years of a print mag that survived print's extinction and somehow it successfully transformed to today's thing which became the only relevant mag in the online era. so there's that.

I’m not the one saying I don’t care about people on a computer talking about skating. If you’ve been on slap for over a decade then you clearly do care what people on a computer have to say about skating.

As editor of a major mag for decades, Phelps had access to the best fillers in the world and still couldn’t manage to film. He was an asshole junkie. Good riddance.

What about if there's a wall in the way? Or you are otherwise sure to get smoked? You probably had a clip or two in mind when u wrote that...?

Also how do you make footage about yourself? What? It's not like they're his parts dude... You might be doing too much meta-criticism here - Imagine you were in the park watching him film, would you say the same? Nah you'd probably say "damn, sick".

Anybody saying Phelps never filmed just hasn't looked hard enough I got schooled on this before.

I disagree that Thrasher was dictating what was cool in skating back in the day. I think Transworld was bigger in the 80s, and Big Brother was more influential in the 90s. Thrasher was in this weird old guy space in the 90s, trying to figure out how to cover what was happening while sticking to their hash roots. Their coverage of pool skaters and such was just not the thing that people cared about. Even SOTY was kind of a thing like- oh cool, good for them. It wasn't the big deal it is now.

Joa Fields has more integrity than Jake Phelps ever had. Sure Phelps ran his big mouth and drug addled hellride like some kind of hero of the gnar but when it comes down to it he was an industry bendover like everybody else. He knew exactly where the line was and toed it perfectly, never once held someone accountable for doing actually bad things when it would've cost ad dollars. Always snuck up to just the right people and stomped on the easy targets. Even if my personal tastes when it comes to skateboarding aesthetics and culture are way closer to Phelper than Gifted Hater, I know which one gave Christine a platform, I know which one exposed industry plants and posers like Berle and Beatrice, I know which one has refused industry money time and again so he could keep saying exactly what he wanted. Doesn't make me like the Youtuber's cringey contrarianism any more but I won't let personal preference cloud my judgement over who of the two has/had an actual spine.

I was hanging out with 2 well regarded mid 80-mid 90s pro’s this past summer in California and conversation about Phelps came up. One dude liked him, the other said he wasn’t a particularly nice guy. Both stated, unequivocally, that more than anyone, Phelps decided what was going to be seen in skateboarding. Phelps doesnt like your city, it wont be covered. Phelps doesnt like you, you wont be covered.

Im 40, so not some old heshed out bowl dog Phelps worshipper, and slap mag was the best mag, but to say that Transworld and Big Brother were better or more influential isn’t accurate. Maybe for you, in your town, but that’s definitely an unpopular opinion. Shit, a month or 2 ago, i asked one of my very good friends, east coast dude early 50s dude, been skating since the 80s, in the industry since 97, about skate mag hierarchy in his lifetime and it went like “big brother had a cool early phase, but it’s always been Thrasher. I likes slap the best, the whole SF vibe, but Thrasher had dictated what happens in skateboarding. Transworld was like a Christian style skate mag.”

So its anecdotal and opinion based, but I haven’t encountered anyone sharing your opinion in the wild

I get the initial post, IMO both Phelps and Joa at times drove but more so filled and facilitated popular narratives.  Phelps: skating is gnarly, this is how it used to be…..Joa: sarcastic troll.  Everyone hitches their trailers to them and eventually people start saying how they suck, when really they are just being themselves… They both were far sighted?

Same thing but replace Thrasher with Transworld. When it came to coverage and videos they put out, Thrasher definitely got the B-sides. Every great skater (even ones Phelps didn’t like) was putting their best stuff towards anything but Thrasher.

for better or worse gh has filled the void of the phelper
a polarising, funny personality whose opinions generally echo that of the core community

in 2025 it only makes sense that this is in the form of a youtuber/twitch streamer

also, i can almost guarantee the old guys he pisses off these days would have held  phelps word as gospel in the hellride era , which i think  only adds to my point .. in 10 years gh devotees gonna be doing the same to whoevers next up - provided they survive the groyper wars of 2028

future is now old guys

Joa having the same cred as Phelps is laughable...Also grew up in the 90s and am not a fan of his videos but don't care for him, what either way he ends up in skateboarding, the scene has gotten so big that I can enjoy it without ever interacting with any of his content.    The only people who i think deserve to be punched in the face are literal nazi's like Nick Fuentes and Richard spencer.  Joa or any opinions like his does not deserve any physical violence

I loved Big Brother, and I will say they were sort of the amplified voice of the average skateboarder in that they spoke freely and did not censor themselves — but I just don’t understand how one could say they were more influential than Thrasher. The mag was certainly at its lowest in the 90’s though.

I see what where you're coming from regarding Transworld. Big Brother definitely had a moment in the 90s, it was and is my favorite mag and I'd take Nieratko and Carnie over Phelps any day. I'd still say Thrasher had more cultural pull overall. I'd also say, given that Phelps ran the show from 1993-2019. So he presided over the mag as SOTY, KOTR, their videos, Hellride, Skate Rock, etc., all become central aspects of skateboarding culture. So as far as cultural impact, it furthers the argument that Phelps influence is astronomical, certainly far beyond that of Gifted Hater.

Just as a final point, I don't engage with him at all and don't feel I'm missing anything. He comments on the videos and people that make up the culture, but Thrasher, Phelps in his time, created that culture itself. If you ignore Thrasher's outlets, you miss out on huge instances of important aspects of skateboarding, videos and interviews and photos. Meanwhile, you can completely ignore GH and not really miss anything.

Fuck it. ima just say it:
Skating a Heroin deck in 2025 feels icky, like irl 4chan dudes hoarding Pokémon cards or collecting Funko Pops. I say this because even though I fuck heavy with Heroin, the Instagram is literally just “look at my setup” porn. Do any of these people actually ride the fucking boards? Why am I looking at a wall covered in 8 different fucking egg decks on a Insta reel? When did did we start collecting readily available skateboards and treat them like PSA graded collectables instead of skating them? Like yeah, deck collecting always been a thing, but at this point I just want to see Craig Questions do a fat boneless or Dead Dave do something interesting, as opposed to a bunch of divorced dads jerking their pickles on the Heroin Insta. That said, I’m not out here saying all of Heroin is wack now. Did see a kid with a curb crusher deck the other day, and he was pretty chill.

I'm not hating on your post or anything- and I don't use insta anymore so admittedly maybe I'm missing the point, but what the fuck are you saying here?
Heroin have been doing their own thing since 1999 or before. Always been good shit to me.

Basically, whenever I click on Instagram all Heroin ever posts on their story/reel page thing are just picks of people's setups, and it's at a point where it just feels like none of these dudes even ride the decks they're posting/are just clout chasing for a repost/like from Heroin. Some of the posts are legit like walls of Heroin decks. Now, look, I'm full on cringe myself, but I can't help but feeling even more cringe looking at this shit. Of course other brands also do this, but with Heroin it's at a point where every fucking time I log in there's legit like 20 pictures of Heroin reposting/liking bullshit on their story. Yes, it's my dumbass choice to use social media, but at least other brands I follow are like posting actual interesting shit. It's not so much the products themselves, but the way the brand is becoming a repost bot on Instagram.
