it's easy to hate what you don't understand, but try to appreciate that he has so much board control that he can do a variety of flip tricks with so much control even after the catch that he can squeeze in another trick (sometimes even opposite stance like the sw fs flip on wallenberg) on the way down if he feels so inclined because, well, he is him

Middle aged Midwest dude here to chime in. In the mid/late 90’s to early 2000’s Transworld was way bigger here than Thrasher. Transworld full length videos used to be one of the big things you always looked forward to and always hit. Thrasher was definitely the older dude skating bowls mag to us, which given the closest shitty 3 foot quarter pipe to us was a 45 minute drive IF we could get a ride, it didn’t resonate. It was the 4th most popular mag in our little town. Funny enough my friends sister used to work at a shitty gas station that sold Slap Mag so we had every issue of it for years.

transworld was always available in magazine stands in the grocery store where I was, with skateboarder 2nd and Thrasher just slightly 3rd.  Probably equal if I ever got to go to Borders Books and Music or somewhere with a huge selection

I could find a Transworld Skate and a The Skateboard Mag at like 3 stores at the shopping center I grew up by. At the peak it was more likely that it was sold out than not stocked at just about any newsstand worth a shit in my area.

The library was also stocked with these. Not even just the skate stuff, mad BMX and motocross magazines, and you'd ask about a certain issue and some were on a fuckin waiting list. Of course Thrasher existed but it straight up did not have the same pull around here

I’m a big Antonio fan. But even I’ll acknowledge it’s a bit much sometimes. Salt can season a steak and make it taste better. But too much salt makes the steak gross.

Companies should run board graphics for more than a season. A year minimum before bringing in new stuff. Pay each artist more. Gives potential classics room to grow in the zeitgeist. Gives shops breathing room and saves board wall space (they can display a couple and store the rest).

Seems like deck brands run themselves thin of ideas and instead put bad stuff out that adds up and hurts their image in the long run.

Skating a Heroin deck in 2025 feels icky, like irl 4chan dudes hoarding Pokémon cards or collecting Funko Pops. I say this because even though I fuck heavy with Heroin, the Instagram is literally just “look at my setup” porn. Do any of these people actually ride the fucking boards? Why am I looking at a wall covered in 8 different fucking egg decks on a Insta reel? When did did we start collecting readily available skateboards and treat them like PSA graded collectables instead of skating them? Like yeah, deck collecting always been a thing, but at this point I just want to see Craig Questions do a fat boneless or Dead Dave do something interesting, as opposed to a bunch of divorced dads jerking their pickles on the Heroin Insta. I heard a grom who obviously just started skating use the term “fakie half can” at the local today and I didn’t even correct him; my friend was about to though but I grabbed his shoulder to stop him and just shook my head no in silence. I’ve lived in San Jose since 1988 and it’s been my favorite California spot …pismo beach was also pretty dope for me, I prefer NorCal city’s over socal

But Cab hasn’t been in San Jose for almost 20yrs right?…and San Jose is pretty liberal regardless of all the tech companies.  I think Cab grew up is East side San Jose too not in cambell or willow glenn

with both the late 1 foots and his half flips, when they were new they were amazing, and then every time he puts out a new variation its amazing too... cuz its so creative and difficult. but when no one else is following suit and doin those tricks and you see him do it again on a diff spot, it doesn't hit the same. he also did switch tre noseblunt on a hand rail

Slaughterhouse remains, to this day, one of the single best and most enjoyable skateboard videos of all time.

Do you like the 88 Footwear video Destroy Everything Now? I think of it as the best "rocker" video of the era, with the coolest team and soundtrack. Slaughterhouse, Baker 3, & Cataclysmic Abyss have some gems but it seemed like the emphasis was more about playing dress up.

I enjoyed the fuck out of the 88 footwear video too, and it's similarly great. But Slaughterhouse, warts and all, is a well put together fucking classic. Charlie Castelluzo aside, everyone in the video went on to bigger things. It gave a load of the Baker crew their start. Except Ragdoll. That two song part was basically his magnum opus anyway.

And Slash kickflip fs 5050d the grass-side rail of Beverly Hills High (I think) but didn't get the recognition it deserved because of some tight jeans.

slaughterhouse fucking sucks and anyone claiming otherwise is deluding themselves. everyone on the team* definitely dressed like shit but that's besides the point, all of those guys were operating on such a low level of skating compared to their peers. slash kickflip 50-50ing rails that bastien kickflip backside tailslid three full years prior (in a line!) and boardsliding hubbas that had already been front blunted, lizard king's ugly "creative" skating that was sometimes literally nothing (kickflip up a curb, nose bash fakie, switch heel off? come on), adrian mallory just skating like a watered down TNT, ragdoll's ass out and dragging on the ground every other shitty firecracker or grab or scraped manual because he can't keep up with people doing real tricks on those spots. and i don't love such direct trick-to-trick comparisons but its not like this video offers anything else, it's not edited well either and they're just skating a bunch of blown-out southern california spots, just worse! it was a laughing stock when it dropped, no one took it seriously, it hasn't aged well, so over of people calling it a classic. just because something came out when you were a teenager doesn't mean it's good.

Like, Anotnio Durao "just" doing a half flip over a picnic table isn't nothing just because Bryan Herman had an unbelievable picnic table part in Stay Gold.
