I'm curious how this will play.

The idea of DOOM being run and gun, DOOM eternal being about jumping and shoot, and this about being a tank/standing your ground is interesting. I hope this isn't like fighting the Marauder over and over again.

Doom with a parry mechanic sounds pretty sick. Seeing different plays on a great formula sounds fun as hell. I'll give it a shot.

Gonna be on game pass day 1 for anyone curious

I’m so fucking excited for this one. Loved DOOM 2016 and Eternal, albeit they play unlike one another. Hearing “you will stand and fight” and being able to pilot the Mech suits they teased us with in Eternal is what sold me.

Preparing to buy a PS5 for this and GTA6.

I'm currently playing eternal on nightmare. I've beaten the expansion pack on ultra-violence and the master levels on ultra-violence, but nightmare is a completely new challenge. I'm currently half-way through Exultia. The slayer gate took a few tries.

Has anyone beaten Eternal on nightmare? Has anyone made it through the expansion pack or the master levels on nightmare?

I recently saw this comparison of Doom Eternal vs Doom 2016.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/doom-the-dark-ages-needs-to-fix-eternals-biggest-gameplay-problem-if-it-wants-to-succeed/ar-AA1DrHru#comments

The author seems to hate Eternal, but loved the 2016 version. I absolutely loved Doom Eternal. I'm only starting Doom 2016 now and so far I don't even really like it. The regular shotgun is a weak AF and I feel like I'm wandering around in the dark or an overly red Mars.

What did others who have played these games think?

I’ve played through both. Doom 2016 was great as a first new installment in 12 years. It does have its issues with being kind of directionless at times, but I still think it’s great. Doom Eternal is still fun and another great game in its own rite, but it just felt way too fast paced and up in the air for what I expect out of a Doom game.

Agree with you 100%

To be honest all the things that made me love Eternal over 2016 such as platforming and super fast gameplay seem to be ditched in Dark Ages

Thanks for the feedback.

I was planning on buying a PS5 for both Doom Dark Ages and for GTA6, but with GTA being delayed and hearing how people didn't like Eternal (which I loved), I'm thinking about holding off.

I got an xbox one to play gta V & RD2
I bought a ps4 to play metal gear & Last of Us
Resident Evil 8 only plays on Xbox Series S, so I gotta get a new console if I wanna play that...

meanwhile, all of these games were available via STEAM, which works immediately with each console's controller upon plugin.
and while you're at it, go Linux, fuck both sony & microsoft

? RE8 is on both PS4 and Xbox One

But yeah I'd always recommend someone getting a PC if they can afford it, aside from Bloodborne and Demon's Souls remake there's almost nothing you can't play natively on PC now and you can emulate BB pretty decently depending on your rig

Didn't feel like playing Eternal after enjoying Doom 2016. More parkour and speed was a turn off.

Strength/tank builds have never been a go-to in any game but we'll see if Dark Ages is an exception.

"The narrative places a greater emphasis on storytelling, with more cutscenes and character development, providing a deeper insight into the Doom Slayer's origins" doesn't sound too great, though.

Doom 2016 was my introduction to the franchise so I can’t hate too much but I couldn’t get in to it when I tried to play it 8 or 9 years ago. I only beat like one or two levels before putting it down.

Eternal on the other hand was insane. Probably one of the most badass games I’ve ever played. No videogame has ever gotten my heart beating so fast in a good way like eternal does. Finally getting around to beating the DLC now.

Am a little bummed that Dark Ages seems less fast paced and platformy but the art direction and combat alone looks so rad I think it will still be a hit. I’ve also heard there’s a combat speed slider so you can make it more intense like how eternal was.

Holding off on Dark Ages for now.

I've been playing 2016. It is getting better as I go through it, but it just doesn't compare to eternal. Eternal was fun, the expansion pack was fun, and the master levels were so gnarly.

2016 has its moments, but the combat isn't nearly as good and weapons aren't as good. The shot gun and super shotgun are especially disappointing. They are awful compared to the originals or eternal.

Agreed. I have some really nostalgic memories of playing 2016. Senior year of hs I threw a party at my parents house while they were out of town shortly after the game launched. I had gotten it for Christmas but had never tried doom games before so it sat in the plastic wrap for a few months until that party. The party was awesome but like 20 people were too drunk to drive so tons of people spent the night. Someone found the game and put it in my old PlayStation. That was my introduction to doom. On a lot of substances with a bunch of people being amazed by the brutality at 4 in the morning. We got stuck and couldn’t figure out how to beat the first level but it still made a great impression.

That being said, eternal is better in every single way in my opinion.

I'm glad you agree. The original IGN review for DOOM 2016 is much lower than DOOM Eternal, but the recent IGN ranking of best DOOM games put DOOM 2016 higher than Eternal. I don't know what is going on.

I just beat 2016 on Ultra-Violence. Other than wanting to see the all of the Classic Doom levels, I have zero interest in returning to this game.

Eternal was so awesome. I beat it and the expansion pack on Nightmare and the Master levels also on Ultra-Violence (I don't think I can do Nightmare on Switch for the Master levels).

Its free on PC if you have game pass. I just played it to see how it was. I was never the biggest fan. The one i liked was DOOM 3. The visuals of the New DOOM are pretty great looking.

Huge fan of Doom and Doom 2 from the 90s and 2016 Doom also. Doom 64 was good too (if you can get passed no reloading animation for the ssg).

Dark ages was sick, finished 100% on ultra violence and almost finished on Nightmare. Patiently waiting for the dlc..

I couldnt get into eternal, didn’t feel like a Doom game with all the jumping/flying around.

Loved 2016. Was meh on Eternal for a while. Tried Dark Ages and don’t know why the fuck they’re talking so much. This doesn’t really feel like the new Dooms to me. Went back to Eternal and love it.

I was SO hyped on this game before it came out but I finally got around to playing it and it kinda sucked. Respect if you like it but it’s not my cup of tea. Doom eternal is one of my favorite games of all time and Dark ages was such a big departure from that formula. I just don’t like it

Anyone playing Eternal on console? If so did you master the quick swap? I've done it a few times, but I can't seem to master this. I feel like this is the next step to actually getting good at this game.

I'm cruising through a second play through on nightmare, but feel I should be quick swapping at this point.

Yep. Jumping / platforming felt like the easy way out (looking at you Destiny).

DA is much more a 'return to form' in that regard...but shit like flying on dragons/giant fights feelcheese/tacked on as filler.

Holy shit, just beat the master level of Taras Nabad (Doom Eternal) on PS5 on Ultra Violence. Fucking absolutely bonkers. There is no possible way I could do this on Nightmare. Gnarliest parts were two Archviles hidden behind a wall and a section with 2 marauders and way too many prowlers.

Genuinely asking bc I’ve never been the type to really play games on the hardest possible difficulty (it happens but it’s rare), but what makes you all want to play a game like DOOM at the highest difficulty setting? I feel like it would just be impossible to enjoy with how many deaths and game overs I’d get.

@Blind Fisherman

This is a good question. I think there are probably three reasons:

1. I feel like a lot of games are too easy (Doom Eternal included since it gives us Sentinel Armor if we struggle with the bosses and we are totally overpowered once we get all the guns/power-ups). The lack of challenge makes the games feel rather passive. Mario Wonder is a good example of this. It is visually amazing, but I feel like I'm moving through just triggering new visuals rather than playing a game.

2. Kind of like skateboarding, since I enjoy the game, I want to see how far I can push myself. I'll never be a speed-runner, just like I was never going to make it anywhere in skateboarding, but I can get better.

3. This game's intensity is part of the fun. Sessions is to chill, Eternal is for the chaos.

There was something about playing BattleToads as a kid (and even as an adult) knowing that I was never going to be good enough to beat the game. BattleToads is a little too difficult, but I do miss the friction of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. Some of the contemporary games feel like there is too much user experience design/research making sure the player doesn't run into too much friction and completes the game no matter what.

I appreciate you taking time to answer my question, Lurp. I can see exactly why after reading that. And I agree with the point of pushing yourself to be the best you can like we do with skating.

And, you’re not wrong about some games becoming overtly easy toward the end. I had the same feeling playing the newer Zelda games (BOTW & TOTK). It seems that the line is pretty fine between offering a crutch and giving you just enough to have an edge on whatever you’re up against in modern gaming.

That is true, too. The intensity being a part of the fun. I’m a big baby when it comes to difficulty.lol I don’t think I’ve ever successfully completed a game on the highest difficulty.

I haven't played any of the new Zelda games. I think the newest Zelda I played was the one released on N64. I keep going back to the Super Nintendo Zelda. It is fun even though I know everything that is going to happen. ;D

I beat Horde mode on Ultra-Violence... well sort of. I made it all the way through every bonus level and every bonus horde and I was down to the last spirit empowered enemy on the final round and died. So, I did it all over again, but didn't do the bonus hordes for the last battle. I need to go back and do it properly but whatever.

But, finally, switched over to Dark Ages. This game is fine. It isn't great and it isn't terrible. I don't really like the shield mechanics . They would have been cooler if they were far far more limited. It feels very GTA to me. Click L2, click R2, something happens, click L2, click R2, something happens, do this a bunch of times until the fight is over. I think I like it better than Doom 2016, but it feels gimmicky and watered down.

Finally, I found out that I have one last master level to complete in the Ancient Gods Part II. Kind of stoked on that.

Ok, I have to admit the game is growing on me a bit.

Eternal is still far and away my favorite. But, I think this is better than 2016. If they do a Dark Ages II, it could be amazing.

The leap from 2016 to Eternal was a huge leap, the leap from Dark Ages to Doom [insert name] could really allow them to flesh out this formula.
