Why did Axion and Kastel shoes die?
« on: September 21, 2007, 02:14:42 PM »
Does anyone got the story about these past companies, as far as why they went out of business? Also is Droors still around?

-droors got bought out by rocco and then whent under a few years ago.

-Im not too sure about Kastel, but they were one of the first skate shoes i know of that you could buy at a sports store...that might have had something to do with it. Ronnie Bertinos shoe was nice.

-As for Axion, i remember Kareem talking about its demise in an interview....i remember him saying something about there being way to many people on the team and it was hard to manage, plus i think he was doing it on his own at the end, sans rocco's money.

Axions were sick up until 2000 or so and then the designs fell off hard.

Well when a shoe company has diminishing returns on their investments, there comes a time to shut it down.  Sometimes this is due to poor shoe manufacturing (Kastel) or poor management (Axion).

Let us not forget Vita with Reese, Tim O and Dill. Run by Mark Oblow. Puffy track shoes for skateboarders.

Hmm why did they die, thats a tough one.

Perhaps because they made ugly, stupid shoes that no one liked or bought?

Just a guess.

Had a pair... I don't remember being amazed by the way they skated, but still one of my fav's from the early tech'd shoe era. The Elite's were really cool too, but I think the

first Kareem's in that hard blue suede were the best. my 2¢

the original mariano's were great chillin shoes, terrible skating shoes...non skateboarders used to bug out on the tongues on those shits. kck 2's were pretty epic as well, again though the quality standards were nothing compared to say the og duffs kck....

Kastel's backer bailed out on them. I had a pair of Ricky Oyola's shoes and really liked them.

Dude...so jealous. I wanted that color soooo bad. The only time I saw them in person was on a visit to Supreme in 2000.

Fresh dude.

I had the white ones. All the gangster looking dudes at the junior college were really stoked on them.

Droors is now DC, which is what "DC" stands for---Droors Clothing. As for Vita, their financial backer also bailed on them. Kastel had some pretty weird designs, like the Ronnie Bertino Pro model with the crazy rubber piece. As for Axion, they definately had the hot shit back in the day. Everything from their riders, designs and art direction were on point for a couple years. It seems like there is a huge disconnect between the people that create the companies (skaters) and the people that finance the companies (dudes with money).  When the dudes with money start trying to run the show, that is when most companies turn to shat...

oh well, the 1st Kareem's on Axion were dope....

One of the best demo's i had ever been to was an Axion demo in 2001 at Central Skatepark in Largo, FL.
Kareem and Caine Gayle were both killing it.

I went to an Axion demo in early 2004. the MC kept saying 'hey guys Kareem just called! they'll be here in 20 minutes!!" Kareem was nowhere to be found.

Yeah, he's right.
DC Shoes started out of Droors as either Droors Casual Shoes or Droors Clothing Shoes, and the first pair looked like a Chuck Taylor rip off.
It didn't make it till the Danny Way one.

I'm pretty sure I saw Axions in a sporting goods store the other month. Maybe they were just bought out and turned into Brooks tennis shoes now.
