yeah, I'm at 11 weeks (almost 3 months) and still getting pain across the top of the ankle (and inside in the inner ankle joint) when I pull the foot up towards the sky. been RICE'ing the fuck out of it along with just about every physio exercise known to man.

I was wearing Blazers when it happened.... so I don't even know what to believe about mids/hi's anymore

[close]

your still icing it 3 months later? jesus. i can walk just fine and im using it all day so it cant be that bad. any tips? its still a bit swollen.

This is not a mindblowing tip but maybe someone reading this just rests and hasn't tried it.

Do you have a balance board? I fucked up my foot so hard before that I thought I would never be able to skate without an ankle brace thing.. I used this for as long as I could every day and eventually it felt okay. Make sure to get a high one though.

I have pretty fucked up ankles and have seen numerous doctors about it. Ice won't do anything for you except for the initial injury to prevent swelling. At this stage, hot towel wraps are what you should do in regards to temperature treatments.

Best thing I can recommend, I've never tried the balance boards, but therabands will build up hella strength. You can do a ton of little exercises while watching tv, etc. After 4-6 weeks, you should notice significant improvement.

Heat is one of the worst things for injuries. Heat increases inflammation where cold relieves inflammation. Ice constricts the blood vessels and then pulls blood to the area to naturally heat it up. This increases circulation and blood flow, which is the main factor in healing.

Listen to Anthony Shetler's podcast with Dr. David Sales. It's pretty much 2 hours of advice for skateboarders regarding injuries, prevention, nutrition, etc.

Listen to Anthony Shetler's podcast with Dr. David Sales. It's pretty much 2 hours of advice for skateboarders regarding injuries, prevention, nutrition, etc.

Heat is an excellent source for reducing pain, relieving soreness and relaxing tissue in persistent muscle injuries. While ice packs are THE method that should be applied to a fresh ankle sprain, after the initial injury, ice isn't going to be so effective. Ice actually restricts the blood flow to targeted areas, therefore restricting potential swelling. This is why it is used immediately following the injury. On the other hand, heat is used for injuries that haven't healed well over a longer period, like a month or two, by increasing the blood flow (which in persistent injuries, is something the muscle has too little of) to the targeted area, allowing flexibility, which in turn prepares the muscle for rehabilitative exercises.

I think you might be taking the bolded quote out of context. It's not suggesting initial treatment, rather it was in response to someone who is still suffering after three months of ice. After that long, it seems pretty clear that cold treatments are not improving the injury.

Obviously, these things are not universal and depend on how many times and how serious the injury is. One doctor's opinion is not a be all end all of the discussion. Ultimately, a person has to find what works best for them. In my case, as numerous physicians recommended to me, heat helped.

Not gonna argue your long reply because you're clearly a professional since you have fucked up ankles and have seen doctors.  ::)

But ice is the most beneficial thing for an injury at any time, not just when you hurt it. You should ice after skating even when you're not injured. Look at pro athletes, they always have bags of ice on their knees and/or ankles after games. After physical therapy sessions, they always have you ice. I wonder why they never use hot towels.

Jeez dude, don't get all flustered. Athletes using ice like that, like say a baseball pitcher post game or Reynolds famously in that ice bath, would constitute an initial aggravation.

Haha not flustered at all dude, I thought I was pretty passive. Or how Michael Jordan famously wrapped bags of ice around his knees after every game. I guess the Bulls' team of sports doctors and physical therapists were just a bunch of idiots and aggravated the knees of Michael Jordan for years huh Dr. Makaveli?

I feel I have to respond, so people don't read this and think ice is bad, or that they should be heating injuries. That's just false information.

Look dude, I tried to be objective, but you're just misunderstanding. Ice is super good for treating injuries and soreness right after aggravation, as I have already said. However, for treating injuries that occurred weeks ago and that have not healed, heat is better. No where did I ever say you should never ice anything and all that.

I feel like this is that scene in the movie 24 Hour Party People where some dude is telling Tony that The Beatles manager was named George Epstien and the producer was Brian Martin. Like you know the information, just not correctly. In other words, to quote Tony Wilson, "You're just fucking wrong."

Both articles said ICE JOINTS and HEAT MUSCLES. This all stemmed from an ANKLE INJURY... A JOINT.

You're implying that muscles have nothing to do with ankle injuries... What are tendons attached to again? Muscles around the ankle stabilise the joint and move the foot. Strengthening the muscles and improving proprioception are the biggest two things physiotherapists make you do after recovering from ankle injuries. Don't spread misinformation here and go around calling people idiots, this shit affects a lot of people on this forum.

thanks for the tips
ive been using this:

but only for a little bit every day.
so i should just stand on it as much as i can? i believe my ankles are really strong though, as ive never rolled them badly before. my fingers are all fucked up though so i guess thats the price i have to pay. i dislocated my finger when lifting a heavy thing like a year ago, but im going to the doctor to check it out tomorrow. should i ask for her to refer me to a physiotherapist? i can push around and do small fakie shuvs but any kind of jumping hurts.

i honestly trust you guys more than the doctors.

Honestly I wouldn't skate and just let the thing heal. It will be worth it in the end. Do these exercises once or twice per day and ice for 10-20 minutes afterwards. This is from my Physical Therapist and I can definitely feel my ankle getting stronger. It's a slow process but injuries are just part of the game and you have to deal with them.

but wont skating make it stronger/ train it for skate motions? but thanks for the picture, started doing them already (the ones i can read) you wouldnt happen to have a better resolution one?

Arnicare gel helps a lot. I've even seen it in a Brad Cromer insta pic.

hahahah i dont know why but that made me laugh. just because a pro does something that doesnt mean its smart though. pro skateboarders are generally some of the dumbest fucking people on earth. but i will check it out thanks for the tip.

I can't decide between getting blazer mids or one stars as my next pair to try out.
Blazer mids: Extremely durable, supportive (for a vulc), good boardfeel/grip, and very comfortable once broken in. Only cons I can think of is that they get a bit hot and it has the zoom air insole (which I don't like)

One stars: Fairly durable, lunarlon insole, good boardfeel/grip. Cons: the bottom of the sole detached from one of my shoes, I hope you have extremely skinny feet because they are so pointy it's unbelievable, you have to skate them for a while to obtain good comfort and no pinky toe blisters. I also found that they stretched a lot which makes them look really weird.

Personally I think blazer mids are the way to go, you could also check out the one star mid if you're into those.
