I had one of these decks and fucking loved it. Lasted a noticeably long time, never broke either, and it was at a time that I was breaking almost a board a week.

I don’t remember this at all.

Me neither but I wasn't there and never tried one so that might have something to do with it

If you break boards this is worth it, if you're just a guy chipping the tail still getting after it you're run of the mill set up will last long enough.

I know someone that bought a few, because he breaks boards a lot. He likes them. They last longer than a normal maple deck, but he did crack/break one in about 2-3 weeks.

When people complain about boards breaking, I just tell them to land bolts. Stop trying to stomp every trick you do.

“I’ll never get a Deathwish again. I broke it on a flat ground kickflip on the first day! I love Baker boards though” Shit drives me crazy.

Can't understand people breaking new boards on flat ground

I think seeing how some people skate, especially how some people land very awkwardly if they don't quite get a trick to work well, it makes a lot more sense.

The other thing to note is wood inconsistencies or other factors too, but in general any board, brand new through to whatever state of destroyed can seemingly break "just doing a simple trick" but I wonder what beatings that board has had before then to weaken it.

Even more so when boards are very new and very stiff, landing wrong, mostly snapping off the tail or nose, is way more common as I have done on the first session just turned up to the skatepark, tried a kicky on the platform, maybe a bit too keen, cracked the nose as I landed too far forward and was actually trying to get my feet off the board as it didn't flip right, grip too sticky or whatever.

A well worn in board just feels so much more right to me, not something that I have just set up, but that is probably more just a me thing.

I would be very in the back seat on tre flips so would often land heavily and break the tails on any boards, which is maybe the best thing to add more than anything else.  I am not that big or heavy at all, but more just clumsy and not balanced, especially trying a little too hard to land on the board, when I maybe should have concentrated more on balance and other things.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I guess it depends on the quality of the wood or how long you've been using the same board. I broke a World Industries board doing an ollie over an old TV box that my friends and I found on the street. I landed with my weight slightly back, almost like doing a manual, and cleanly snapped the tail. That's why I'm amazed when I see a pro jumping down some stairs and landing directly in a manual or nose manual without breaking their board. It seems unbelievable.

I love that the DLX riders have no idea what basalt is yet are “backing” it so hard. They don’t even fucking now how a skateboard is made. “Uhh what? It’s got salt in it?” I’m not buyin’ it. This is like the time I bought a habitat board with a hemp ply in it. It literally did nothing..maybe made things worse actually.

I’m not particularly big but I land heavily a lot and I’m a sloppy skater for certain, when a board is fresh and crispy it absorbs less impact, usually after the third session is when I feel like it’s broken in and I’m out of the danger zone of snapping the tail on a switch flip or pop shove.

Anybody remember "I-Beam Construction" from New Deal or some other Giant Dist. brands I think? It have a center "ply" that was made of vertical plies. That shit worked.

I remember it. I’m pretty sure I saw a New Deal Templeton deck with it.

Edit: here’s a link with description. Guess they called it V Ply

A long, long time ago I vowed I would never, ever, under any circumstances re-grip a deck.
I've stayed true to that vow and I always will.

I avoid frontside flips until the board is broken in and I've had some fun on it since it is at risk of snapping at the nose. I learned em with a pivot, which is bad because now that I turn most of the way, I still land with that pivot foot heavy and can just focus the nose off upon landing.

Love a good gimmick.

I rode this bamboo habitat board once. Its was this janoski deck. Felt like one of those cheap rubbery number 2 pencils. Shit sucked. For sure lasted longer but id rather have had a bit more rigidity than a floppy bamboo board that flexed weirdly.

Im sure this shit no differnt.

On paper for sure the science project gimmicks make sense. But its never practical escpially for 120 bucks thats crazy.

Best gimmick ever was when popwar just covered the board in a bunch of weird raised dots. I dont think it improved my skating in any capcity but that was a neat press.

I rode a few heavyweights decks whenever they had them jams. Well they lasted for quite sometime only issue was they'd chip a bit if you aren't vigilant about zip outs. Hmmm basalt is DLXSF version of flight decks or VX? I mean if you're a big boy and it works go for it.  I've seen those flight decks get stress tested and never seen anyone break or focus them.  Although I'm sure they do, I've just never seen it maybe razor tail but break like a regular maple deck.

I've been riding the 8.5 AH for about three weeks. I'm a sucker for tech gimmicks. It doesn't feel anything like a flight deck. The first session was kind of odd. I could notice a difference from the traditional maple decks but I wasn't sure if I liked it. I think it had something to do with how rigid the deck was. After that, it just feels like a normal deck. It might have a little more pop but not enough to justify the price difference. I'm hit or miss on whether I break boards. I usually retire them when they start to get soggy. I'll report back when it bites the dust to see if it actually lasts longer.

Side Note: I like to have my hardware flush and it was damn near impossible to manage that by hand. The deck was so hard it almost stripped the hardware. I pity any shop employee that has to set up very many of these.

interesting, yea i'm more interested in the longer lasting pop than i am about the inability to break - the most appealing part of the promo vids was the different riders hitting the tail against the ground to show how the sound of the pop is still snappy

if they come out with an 8.75 popsicle size i'd def try one

Idk about that price though, if given one as a hand me down I'd gladly rock one.  Till then I'll stick with regular decks.

Last time I skated my friend broke his board carving a steep bank.   He's a big dude but still surprising.  Then I broke my radius into pieces.   Guess we both could have used some basalt

Quick Update: Deck is still going strong. It is still living in that sweet spot of a freshly broken in deck. I slipped out on a blunt to fakie and rocketed the board into a brick wall. Barely even a scratch on it. A traditional deck would have had to be retired.
