8.0 vs 8.25

What are the pros and cons of each? Been riding 8.0 and I like it but I kinda want to try an 8.25?

I tried a 8.25 once and it felt weird and monstrous compared to the 8s I always ride. Gave the board to my kid and he likes it.

I feel the pros and cons of them are pretty obvious but it’s all relative to what you’re used to and very subjective. It’ll always come down to nimbleness (8.0) vs stability (8.25+) and what you want to prioritize. Foot size probably plays a big factor in preference too.

I’m a pretty short person with size 9 feet and usually rock an 8.125 which I find to be the best of both worlds for me

I skated 8s for decades and then went to 8.25 but trying to keep the wheelbase at 14-14.25. Still on 139s. Feels perfect

A bonus for 8.25 is your selection will be wider

I also like borrowing old/used decks from my friends like if I’m interesting in trying a 10 in popsicle I’d rather borrow a shitty one then spending $$$ on something I’m not sure of

8.25: are just comfortable, I tried going back to 8.125 because 8 just didn’t feel like an option anymore and meh. 8.25 just feels nice. Considering I like my board a bit longer and 8, and 8.125 just look weird once they start hitting 31.9

I’m way more tied to my trucks than the size of the board. I ride 149s on 8.25s mostly

Depends on the shape.

I have 8.0 and 8.25 boards set up right now and the biggest difference I notice skating them is the 8 has a smaller tail.

Kinda digging 8.3 lately with 8.25 axles. I’m noticing tail length is more important for me than board width.

That’s been my setup for the past year, and I’m actually actively learning new tricks still at age 40.

I had this dilemma between 1996 and 2004 all the fucking time. 8.25s just felt better but flip tricks came harder... It wasn't until I realized that 149s on 8.25s had a certain kind of magic that I was cured...

But I haven't ridden anything smaller than 8.5" in close to 20 years...

Depending on your age and when you started, 8" set ups should be better for muscle memory tricks. They flip quicker and more precise. 8.25 set ups give you more landing surface which equals less toe drags and frustrating shit like that. Thats my take on it. Maybe a 8.25 with 8" trucks will be a good option for you, maybe not..idk boomer but whatever path you choose, I hope it's prosperous.

The answer is really going to depend on how close the dims and shape of the 8.25 are to your 8.0

Like if you ride a regular 8.0x31.875x14.15, then see if you can find on of the DLX 8.12x32x14.25. I think it should be pretty similar

Been going back and forth between this two for 10+ years now.  I have settled on the 8.25 G069 from crailtap as my winner in size and shape.  I honestly don't think it's beatable

8.25 pro: more/easier board options, I think skating a lot of ledge tricks/transitions 8.25 is better, straight flip tricks work same or better.  Cons: when boards get worn, or I buy wonky dimensions, I think it’s too big.

8.0: I skate this now, generally have smaller wheel bases, flipping my board is easier(ish), I can’t get mad at my board and call it a longboard. 

8.125 boards work well on both set ups, it can make 8.25 trucks feel nimble or give you a bit more leverage and width on 8” trucks.

I’d say if you are willing to search out the right dimensions, you can set up an 8.25 that works well….

i notice more of a difference moving up the truck size than the board size
if i go above 8.5" truck and 14.25" wb it starts to feel kinda too big for me
i noticed above 57mm is too big for wheels for me too kinda

Before I started skating again in the last couple years, my last few decks were 8" (from 10+ years ago). When I started back and tried to ride one of my old setups at a skatepark (I never had many or rode much at skateparks before), it felt way too unstable and slippery (I had skinny, 90's era 101, worn down 50mm wheels and 7.6" trucks too).

Ended up getting 8.25" with matching trucks and Conical Full 99 54mm and slowly built my way back up to being able to skate again. During that time, I went back to try my old 8" and was able to have some fun with it trying flat ground tricks and noticed it popped and flipped a lot easier for me. Currently on an 8.5" and 8.375" to check out even wider boards and the 8.5" seems a bit too much and especially because it also has a longer 14.5" wb. Next time I need a new deck, I'm going to try 8.125" with either 8.25" or 8.5" trucks and 14" wheelbase because now that I have a feel for what works for me, I think that may be the perfect balance.

Is their a difference, yes, obviously. Are there a lot of factors to take into consideration when switching or comparing, yes. If you skate an 8.25" with 8" trucks. And then go to an 8" board with the same truck. Really no difference. If you switch the trucks, you feel a difference. I did going from skating 7.6" trucks to 8" trucks moving up to 8.25". Feebles and krooks felt better. I skated some 8.5's in the mix with bigger trucks and that REALLY made a difference. Flip tricks felt weird, stalls felt weird, and a heavy ass board. So, 8 vs 8.25? Pick one and ride it. Switch it up. Have fun. Don't take anything to seriously.

Thunder lights for years. 8" trucks whater # that is. Been on crail shapes for a while. I've rode the geering 14" WB and liked that one. Board feels backwards though. Full tail with a tapered nose. It's like I'm one of those idiots who ride their board backwards. But it skates good. Also the delfino santa cruz 8" 14WB boards are nice. But a little too steep compared to the girl board.

I skate venture 5.2 on 8” /8.25” decksso I favor mellow decks with 14-14.25 wb and longer tails (over 6.5 if possible). Girl/primitive/April decks work good with ventures. There is the go52 girl deck or the quasi proto that skates super small because of short wheelbase and lots of taper in the back that might be a good stepping stone.

I used to ride 8s with 139s, then tried 8.1 and then 8.12 and 8.18 all on the same trucks, which worked well for a long, long time, then went with 144s when they finally came out, which took a little to get used to but were more comfortable for me.

Back in the day, there were no 144s so people who did go up to an 8.25 would either be on 139s or step up (massively for that era) to 149s with minimal washers, with some people still skating 8.25 boards in 139s just because that is what they were used to and don't want to change.


I think we have had this conversation before in other threads, but going in somewhere and standing on a few 8.1 to 8.25 sized boards, you might find something that feels ok and can try that on your existing setup, just swapping the deck in.

That would be a whole lot easier than getting an 8.25 and 144 trucks, but I know some people who wouldn't change out anything on their current setup and would get a whole complete of a different size to try, just to see what the two different boards feel like.


At least there are some options there, even with the same brands, just slightly bigger boards.

No better feeling than dialing all your flip tricks in on a bigger board because your technique is on point, which kinda makes deck size irrelevant in many cases.
