street fighter looks pretty sick. dat flashkick sending orville peck through the wall ooo

It’s as bizarrely miscast as the Mario movies, but I can’t say I’m not a little intrigued.   Had an over the top Speed Racer movie look that I hope it maintains

I don’t hate the re-cast of Jamie Dornan as Aragorn for the LOTR Rogue One movie they’re doing

Nearly a month away from Backrooms release. I haven't been this level of stoke for a new movie in a long time!

Project Hailmary was really good, liked the book slightly better but this was a fine adaptation.

I’ll see it bc I have a-list, but I can’t remember the last time A24 stuck the landing with this kind of movie.

Oh ok I can see where excitement comes from after googling.   I didn’t realize it was based off his own previous shorts.   That seems a bit more promising

Legitimately, I don’t think they have stuck the landing on a horror film negating bring her back since the 2010’s.

Forgot the Philippou Bros were A24 - I liked both bring her back and talk to me a lot

With you on I Saw the TV Glow.   One of those things where the reviews seemed like they were describing a different movie.   The allegory was conpletely lost on me

The soundtrack was great, I know in her previous film “let’s all go to the worlds fair” it was a similar allegory used, both films weren’t my cup of tea.

Apparently she is directing a “black hole” Netflix series based off the Charles burns graphic novel, hopefully that will be good.

That’s a title that’s had a lot of people attached over the years so I’m always a little skeptical.

When I was interning at plan b, they had a ton of copies of the graphic novel on their book shelf but would never let me read one of them which annoyed the shit out of me especially because they didn’t have much for me to do in the meantime

New Damian McCarthy film ‘Hokum’ comes out may 1st. Hyped for that. I thought 2024’s oddity was awesome.

It’s one of the best especially the line work by burns is beautiful, I know the director who made the crow remake and the live action ghost in the shell made a made a proof of concept in like 2010…. It wasn’t particularly great, always wanted Cronenberg's kid or Julia Ducournau to tackle it but I’m interested to see what happens.

Sucks to hear B.Pitt was being stingy with the black hole :(  was this around the time kick ass came out? I know that was a plan b joint so they were probably looking for their next hit.

Hah no he doesn’t go to the office  - it was the assistants.   It was during them trying to figure out the new third act for World War Z so none of the producers were in the office but I didn’t get to deliver salads to one of the meetings and got to meet drew goddard and Damon lindelof who was very friendly.

Looks like Mother Mary gets added to the list.  Was going to see it but came across an article about why do movies get pop stardom so wrong and it let me know I would have regretted going

I guess I’m in the minority, but Opus was maybe my favorite movie I saw last year. Fun concept, classic John Malkovich, fun twist. I had a blast and the music was solid too

I stumbled over the backrooms shorts recently and have since spent hours glued to the screen looking at empty rooms. Super stoked to see what the film does with it, the concept (empty rooms are super scary) is pure genius and the fact that they let the original creator direct gives me hope.

Exact same when I first found it. It's especially fucked when you go into these sort of spaces in real life and tap into the labyrinth atmosphere Kane creates.

Can you guys believe that Jackass made 5 movies, multiple seasons and spinoffs all because of skateboarding and Big Brother?

Checked out the Speed Racer re-release bc so many have said it was an underrated movie.   Wasn’t the best smelling crowd I’ve been in either, but despite the Spy Kids level cgi at times, I def got sucked in and was into what they going for, which was never going to be wide audiences

I mean if you like the anime, it seems to be loving crafted in respect to it, but you can see in that opening the wild juxtaposition of the use of CGI in the movie.   Once you get past the first act, everything runs a lot smoother, but ignore the hyperbolic reviews.   I don’t think they will put you in right expectation level

Don’t know if anyone missed this last month but here’s May:

May 1
Devil Wears Prada 2
Hokum
RZA’s One Spoon of Chocolate (first movie in the new RZA/QT partnership.  QT just produces/“presents”)

May 8
Sheep Detectives (seems like a fun kids movie adapted by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl/Last of Us oddly)
Mortal Kombat 2

May 13
Top Gun 40th re-release / Top Gun 2 re-release

May 15
In the Grey (dir Guy Ritchie)

May 22
Mandalorian and Grogu
I Love Boosters (dir Boots Riley)

May 29
Backrooms
Tuner
Breadwinner (Nate Bargatze movie)

Well its mainly because anime adaptions in the 2000s weren't usually good ...
I havent seen too many live action anime adoptions, did see that Ghost in the Shell movie with Scarlett Johansen and thought it was meh.   Blade of the immortal was probably one of my favorite live action version of an anime.

I watched that Patrick Wilhelm review and thought its something I need to watch, just keep forgetting to get around to it.

Checked out the Speed Racer re-release bc so many have said it was an underrated movie.   Wasn’t the best smelling crowd I’ve been in either, but despite the Spy Kids level cgi at times, I def got sucked in and was into what they going for, which was never going to be wide audiences

I still haven't seen it due to my connection to the anime but saw this last year and it made me want to give it a go...still haven't gotten around to it yet

Right - but those anime adaptations are just trying to make an American movie out an anime while Speed Racer is like the proto-Scott Pilgrim in embracing the visual style

Breadwinner looks ai generated

The amount of money that is being pumped into Nate Bargatze as an industry is insane.  Dude is getting his own theme parks

I liked Hokum.  Pretty spooky.  I yelled at least a couple times in jump scare moments.

Idk if it’s still in theatres but I saw the movie Undertone awhile back and it was the scariest movie I’ve ever seen in my life by far. I’ve walked out of a handful of movies in my life for being really shitty but I’ve never walked out of a movie for being too scary. And I strongly considered walking out of Undertone because my heart was racing so damn much. It had my lady tripping too. Wasn’t the type of horror movie to give me nightmares but it gave me such an adrenaline rush like a roller coaster to watch. Only criticism was the ending felt kinda weak but other than that it’s my new favorite horror movie. 10/10
