Does anyone remember skate videos on VHS used to cost like $40-60? I'm pretty sure I bought Modus Operandi for $60+tax in 2001 or whenever it was.

It was around $25-30 in the states if I remember correctly

sounds about right. google says $30 USD was about $45 CAD and then probably have to factor in shipping to canada and all that. the more expensive shops likely jacked it up a bit more.

I think 411s were like 30 or 40. Full lengths were up around $60 to 80 (New Zealand). For teenagers in rural NZ, any video was a prize. We had very few. I missed so many classics.

I distinctly remember saving up and paying 45 euros for the Really Sorry DVD in '03 and then breaking my board mere days later. My best friend and I had to share his board for a while until I scraped together enough dough to get a shop deck. Fun times.

As a kid/teen, my house was the most centrally located and closest to most of the spots we skated, also my parents were rarely home and I had the entire finished basement to myself, so my house was the unofficial meetup/hangout house.
I pretty much never had to buy any skate videos, they'd just end up at my house.
I had a shelf with like 40 VHS tapes on it and I think I bought like 5 of them.
I wasn't stealing them, or even asking to borrow them, friends would just bring them to my house and leave them there.

Like Eli shows up one day like "Guys I got Trouble Shooters, let's watch it!" and then he just left it at my house and I STILL have that Trouble Shooters VHS to this day.

Plan B „questionable“ VHS was 99,- DM in Germany when it came out, a pro deck was 109,- at the time for reference.
Couldn’t afford it. We then convinced the shop owner to let us rent a copy..

my "friend" sold me a tape for $40 that he copied 411 26, Fullfill the dream, and most of "The End" (he said he did not include the vert parts because they were "Gay"  >:( )

After I bought Modus, I borrowed a bunch of videos but then that was around the time Limewire type stuff started getting really big (KaZaa was the one I was using) I got a few videos from there and then saw like "this video came from #sk8videos on irc dalnet". was able to get pretty much any video through there, but it was hard because youd have to wait for certain users to come online and then queue up. it was really dope. I recognize a couple users on here from there over the years. My house ended up being the house everyone came to to watch vids as a result -  I also lived the most central to the spots, plus my dad always got Fruitopia 24 packs and pizza pops.

that sucks. I remember having baker 3 kinda straight away. that was a good video but i thought mostly for the funny parts and not so mcuh for the skating. i really liked the emerica : This is Skateboarding vid. I feel like that vid is kinda slept on and doesnt get much attention for some reason. it was absolutely huge at the time (to me at least)

I was such a shitty little pirate kid the only skate video I owned was RDS FSU 2002 on VHS and only because Sluggo mailed out a bunch of copies here on SLAP like 24 years ago lolol. I was pretty active on DALnet and later EFnet sv channes. Pretty sure I used the nickname infinite or just Daniel... I'm sure we crossed paths on there once before. I used to run a file server on there as well.

My childhood neighbor who I skated with had a DVD burner and we would essentially take turns buying videos and then just ripping them for each other. So a few of my classics like Really Sorry or Yeah Right are on burned discs that I still have.

In hindsight, I think he bought the better videos in the beginning.

Porn.

The worst was when the first minute or so is the intro to the movie, then a hard cut to porn, smut, snuff, etc. The internet was wild.

I was joking around with a friend who likes Jaeb telling him that Jaeb skates a 9. He was in disbelief of it but I kept the gag running telling him that he put out a setup vid stating it but then deleted it. He examined his footy to see and told me there’s no way but I told him it’s not really noticeable because he actually has really big feet.
I just got a message from him saying that he just bought a 9 to try out, invested in bigger trucks as well, he went all in. Now I’m trying to figure out how to break the news to him that I was just ribbing him.

Honestly if your friend is that impressionable just let him have it in his mind that he has his favorite skaters setup. This may have just been an excuse for him to spend $200 on new gear anyways.
