I spent 50 bucks on one of those plyometric boxes you jump up on.  It seems to be working, my legs feel stronger but I still don't feel like I have that lightness on my feet or the jump I used to have 20 years ago.  I don't expect it to ever be the same as when I was younger but I feel "heavy" and my vertical jump is weak.  I'm 46 so I'm not expecting a lot just more than I'm at now.

Dude I feel you so much on this one. Mid 40s started doing lots of plyo and box jumps, jumping on and off of picnic tables and stuff, trying to find that old bounce.

Wish I could tell you what works. But I have a theory: our old bodies can’t do that HIIT stuff as often. Max 1-2x a week. More than that (I was trying to do 3-4x/wk like I was 18) and you end up tearing down instead of building.

…somebody with more physio training please chime in here?

Also: one of the workout/man stuff magazines did a “dunk at 40” article a few years back. Esquire? Mens Health?

I'm aiming for three times a week.  The first time I did the box jumps my legs were sore for three or four days.  I might adjust the amount of reps I do but I'm going to try 3 days a week for a month or two and see what happens.

That’s some beast mode shit and I respect it.

I went on chat GPT asked it to make a good workout routine and warm up routine for skateboarding. I do an upper lower split. On the 1st upper lower days I do strength and the other two upper lower days I do hypertophy. Sometimes on my off days I’ll add some sort of cardio. Have to say it’s helped a ton strengthen the muscles around my joints. I have to sub squat for leg press due to a lower back injury but will say I’m able to skate longer and pop higher and falls don’t hurt as bad. Glad I posted this thread hope it helps other old guys out there. I will say skateboarding is making a huge comeback because of guys our age getting back into it

I saw this video (link below) that shows that derrick rose was injury prone and fucked because he would always land on one foot after dunks, instead of holding the rim and landing on both legs, softly.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4ALPRNq66So

Now I can't stop thinking about it. Today I was skating a ledge and noticed all my bails were landed like d-rose, always 1 leg because I tend to jump away from the ledge to avoid accidently stepping on the board and slipping.

If I tried to bail and land on both feet "proper" it was fucking everything up and I got wayyyy to in my head.

People talk about proper bails on transition or down sets where you roll, but what about the little things?

At this age this actually matters imo. If D-rose can tear his shit, why not me?

When I think back on every major leg/knee/ankle injury I've had (which is a lot), pretty much all of them happened landing on one leg with it extended straight. Nowadays I really make an effort to keep my knees bent at all times and if possible try to land on both feet.
