Sony a7iii fisheye?
« on: October 05, 2025, 01:05:15 AM »
What’s up everybody. Pretty new to filming/ photography I have a gh5 with rokinon fisheye setup I got from a homie.

Recently tho was able to get my hands on an a7iii which I enjoy using so much more. Problem is I’m not sure which fisheye to get. Looking at rokinon 8mm 3.1. Anyone have suggestions or experience using a7iii?

I used the A7iii for a while, and I like the Rokinon 8mm a lot with it for filming. You can film 4:3 with it, or you can use Clear Image Zoom to crop in and get a 16:9 image. That way you can set the vigentte where you want, or have none at all.
That said, it's not great for photography because you'd have to crop it. If you want something that does hybrid photo/video really well, you want the canon 8-15 or the new Laowa 8-15 probably. If you're mainly filming, the 8mm is an affordable workhorse in my opinion

Is the rokinon fisheye the same as samyang and/or walimex ? it looks like there are different versions of the rokinon too ?
which version do you use ?

Yea same as Samyang/ Bower and some others. I use the 8mm CS II, it has the removable lens shade. I heard the Samyang variants have better quality control when it comes to focus scale calibration, but can't verify that. I've gone through 4 copies of the Rokinon though, and 1 did have focus issues

thanks! so the only diff between V1 and V2 is the hood being removable ? and have you seen any comparison shots between this lens / the canon 8-15 / the meike lens ?

how did you adapt the lens to the A7iii ? i mostly see canon / nikon mounts

exactly, to my knowledge the only difference is the removable hood. On full frame the hood gets in the shot so the removable version is clutch.
I actually just filmed a quick comparison between this 8mm and the Canon 8-15 because I couldn't find one. I just started a YT channel to post raw footage/ tests and stuff for fun, so I'll post that up when I get it edited
I like to buy lenses in the Canon EF mount because they can be adapted to almost any other camera. I shoot on the A7Siii now, and use the Sigma MC-11 lens adapter to make it work. Highly recommend! There's no play in the mount with it

It's not the comparison but something to check in the meantime

Hey finally made a quick side by side and breakdown. I filmed this just for my own 4:3 test at first and wasn't intending to release a video about it, so hope it still helps. Interested what ya'll think and what I should've added!

I ended up with a Rokinon 12mm f2.8. Thanks for everyone’s input though. This camera is fun to use and the clips look great

Sorry if i'm hijacking the thread again. This reminded me I used to have that lens, dug up some footy from like 5 years ago. Good lens! I remember feeling like it acted closer to a 14-15mm

Instead of starting a new thread I thought i'd just post here and keep it all together. Tested out the Nikon 10.5mm as well and filmed a quick sesh with it. One of my favorites so far, solid black vignette is on point. Peep it lmk what ya'll think also

Dang I don't have the canon anymore unfortunately. If I find one to borrow I will. Could reference back that Canon video and see how the Rokinon fared against both, since I used that as the control point. Not a direct comparison but might help. By feel, Nikon felt very similar to the Canon at 8-10mm. I thought the Nikon might have vignette with no blue. Ended up liking the lens too aside from that benefit. Just had to saw off the hood lol

I tried to compare using the 2 videos before messaging here but it's kinda hard, because obviously the cam is not at the same spot. Nice to read your feelings about it tho. It almost seems like a better option than the 8-15

Yeah totally, I'm down to side by side them if i get a hold of one. I think most people would be happy with either lens. Canon is more versatile forsure, but has that blue vig and is expensive. Nikon looks just as good, is cheaper, and has the blacked out vig, but not as versatile and you gotta saw the hood off. Its always a trade off haha!

For sure! I'm really digging it right now. Felt sketchy sawing the hood off but took my time and ended up all good
