HALLUX RIGIDUS
« on: October 08, 2025, 02:01:28 PM »
maybe this isnt the right place to post but, as anyone had a luck with treating, relieving, minimizing pain, etc from hallux rigidus or big toe arthritis? I can still skate and play ball but it kinda sucks, im in my mid forties and still try and stay active.
I feel sometimes that i just need to deal with the pain and enjoy what im doing but this cant be the shit that takes me out...
the other day i saw a quick reel on instagram from chris joslin and he was showing his feet as he was waxing hair, i suppose, and it appeared that he had a huge knot right on the joint at his big toe. it looked like hallux. that must be painful.
anything worked for you? what are your thoughts?

I injured my big toe last year and it's never been the same. Have to crack it when it gets stiff, otherwise when it bends it causes an extreme amount of pain.

What helps me is wearing toe gel caps, they kind of reduce the amount impact that goes directly on the big toe. Pretty cheap too. Curious to know if this does help you as I imagine my injury is only going to get worse with time.

There's a thread somewhere regarding foot issues/tips for injuries that will have everything you need. I've had the big toe issue come and go a few times. Fp insoles worked the best for me. Make sure you get an insole that resembles the insole that's already in the shoe for a better fit. Also trace your existing insole onto the new one. When you cut it out, save the line. You can always cut it again to make it smaller, but I still haven't found an insole stretcher that works.

A pair of orthotics with a rigid morton's/1st mpj extension is what I'd recommend. Custom prescribed orthotics if you have the coverage. The orthotics' shell has a rigid plastic extension that spans the length of your hallux and helps limit the range of motion on your big toe and reduces the pain that comes from bending it.

After 3 weeks of constant pain I was able to get to my doctor and diagnosed with HR. I’ve got a pair of the cheap carbon fiber Morton’s extension plates that go under you shoes insoles, but the only shoes I own that they fit in are Vans slip ons which probably won’t be getting much use anymore. I’ve got my chill shoes figured out but I’m worried about shoes to skate in. Currently in NB 440v2’s and the one session I’ve had since this started didn’t hurt any more than normal walking but wanting to get something with a stiffer sole. I think the  Reynolds NB would be great, I have them for chill shoes, but I can’t wear them in the summer because my feet get too hot in them. Anyone have surf or stiff sole shoes to skate?

One of my big toes is fucked. Stubbed it right into a slab of concrete after sticking on a fucking crooked grind. Ever since then it doesn’t bend the same. Sometimes I noticed the pain would get worse every few months then go. Once skating I don’t notice it except I feel my switch flips suck now because of it.

Drinking heaps of water, lots of cod liver oil or other omega 3s seem to keep the pain away. The solution has to be returning the foot/body back into alignment. That’s what I’m working on. Sick of my garbage sw flips.
