I mean...not much good comes from kids being on social media.
I'm sure her sponsors can still post clips on her behalf.

weird that there's no carve out for working professionals or celebs. Maybe there is, and it's less trouble just to chill for 2 months.

I read this article last night that was linked in the Simple Magic newsletter about governmental youth content restrictions.

Honestly wish they'd do this in the US. My teenage daughters are both stressing because of TikTok/Snapchat bullshit and I had to restrict both. That stuff is horrible for anyone, but especially young teenagers.

They absolutely need more laws like this. Social media is trash. I recently got my account suspended on ig and I feel like it’s a blessing

Seriously, most social media now a days is basically slot machines designed in a different way to give you that dopamine rush. Even shit like YouTube kids can be pretty damaging. I see my nieces watch the most brain rot shit ever from like verified YouTube kids creators and just sucks how this is basically the norm in the world

The world would be a much better place if this was mandated for all kids under 16 (maybe even 18)

Being born late 80s is wild, we’ve had experience of no internet, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, to dial up dogshit internet, MSN messenger era, early fb/instagram/myspace etc to whatever dystopian hell we are now living through

I was just talking to my colleagues (I work in higher education) about the school the most expensive school in Silicon Valley has a no device policy.

The same people trying convincing your school board they need AI and chromebooks don’t want any of that shit. They rather their kids paint or play piano.

don't punish all of society for not giving your kid a flip phone. this is another advance to control the masses and harvest even more people's sensitive data

Good for Chloe - I think this can only stand to benefit children in the long run, it's no secret that social media is FUCKED for kid's brains. And adult's brains really. Addiction, depression, anxiety, suicide, isolation. They might cry for like 2 weeks but then they'll just go and do something else. Hopefully go skate.

Saying that, there's a similar kind of thing happening in the UK, and I believe it marks the dawn of a new era of the internet worldwide - following China's / North Korea's example and using the internet to control and monitor the people on an individual level. Which, I speculate, may lead to a mass exodus. Only the future will tell, but I know the web is far more hollow than it seems.

Ultimately chaos reigns.

Cuz some of these systems / platforms run so deep in young people's lives that many have lost hope and feel only law can control their growing reliance. And it's partly true.

I think it's more of "I don't like something therefore it should be illegal" mindset.

As an Australian, there has been barely any backlash against these laws. They’re widely accepted as good, unless you’re 14, 15 or 16.

Social media sucks but this is a complete overreach by the government, classic Australian nanny state shit.

The legislation was rushed through parliament without proper consultation or debate, our government sucks.

More like "we have data that shows social media hurts everyone, especially young people, so we will try to protect them". Same as with alcohol or even driving, not everything should be accessible to kids.

I came here to be positive but you literally are an idiot.

Yes, that’s me.

Though I don’t think DUI laws and the social media ban are comparable.

A Jitterbug version of the internet for boomers isn't a terrible idea.
If you grew up with leaded gasoline and paint there's a special internet for you with 2 websites, one is just pictures of dogs and the other is knock knock jokes.

On the one hand, social media is a dredge on society especially the youth but it's also more of the nanny state bullshit we've seen pop up since COVID. I think this really comes down to parenting and accessibility. Your kid does not need an iPhone, all kids need are dumb phones that can only call and text. If you need the government to do your parenting for you, you probably shouldn't have kids in the first place.

Yeah why does the government have any laws protecting children when parents exist?
