Was the plan to not end up back here for some time but here we are.. Another knockout, fractured jaw / cheek bone, lacerated kidney. I’m sure there’s tons of people see this happen again and think “damn this dudes an idiot and never learns his lesson” or the classic “ Told ya you shoulda started wearing a helmet.” Those are the people that don’t understand the minds of us skateboarders and how dedicated we can be.

I’m no helmet nanny but ffs if I was doing the shit he was and sustaining consecutive head injuries I wouldn’t be scoffing at people suggesting a helmet. Obviously the guy has some issues with his dad but it’s a weird time to be bringing it up.

 I also don’t like how he’s speaking for “us skaters” like it’s some unanimous thing that we all agree that PPE is wack or something. The guy has a ton of young kids who look up to him and he’s being pretty fuckin irresponsible by even posting this tbh.

but... skaters do think PPE is wack. It's maybe not unanimous, but it's definitely the majority.

And I don't think a helmet is gonna help much if the dude keeps falling on his head and then going back to it right after getting a concussion.

After two consecutive out cold, hospitalization caliber head injuries, in this short amount of time, I have to wonder if a helmet would even help at this point. I mean, it'd help him not crack his skull for a third time, but I don't think many helmets can totally stop your brain from slapping around in your skull, and he reallllllly needs to avoid that.

Some skaters are really good at bailing, jumping clear of a failed attempt, rolling out of wrecks to minimize damage, but I swear to god that's like the one skill Nyjah never mastered, dude just EATS SHIT, gets tangled in rails and slams into the ground like a sack of wet play dough.

I totally get that skaters want to seem all cool and careless because that was a big part of the initial appeal of it, and we are probably collectively stuck in that 3rd grader mindset no matter if we admit it or not. But Nyjah's attitude towards helmets is just from a whole another dimension of cringe.

This is simply describing an addiction.

It's kind of miraculous that no pro has ever died as a direct result of an on-the-board injury. It does seem that, if someone as  high-profile as Nyjah died while skating (or as a complication from two documented traumatic head injuries), that would truly alter public attitudes about skating.

I agree. Although even if street skaters wore helmets, it would still be dangerous compared to almost any other sport. I'm as hardwired to see helmets as uncool as anyone else, just thinking out loud.

But I will say Mike V pushing fast as fuck through some crusty sidewalks with a helmet does look pretty rad.

I see posts / sentiments like Nyjah's and my first thought, "Dude's ego and sense of masculinity is more fragile than Trump's. Fuck these jocks--same dudes who used to yell "SKATE F*GS!!" from cars."

Irony runs strong with skaters. Collectively, we aren't scared of 20-stair rails. Yet we are terrified of being seen as "uncool" by our peers.
