Putting together a ghetto set-up
« on: January 12, 2026, 06:08:57 PM »
Up front, I currently suck at skating, not real good at filming, just a little bit better than bad at editing.

Putting together a super ghetto 3 "camera set-up" using my current iPhone 17, and 2 iPhone XRs. Research says they will shoot 4k (overkill) at 60fps (should let me slow-mo well enough). Have 2 regular tripods, and one tracking tripod, and some external mics.

For now it is just going to be me, filming me, just want some different angles.
In my head all this works to get the footage.

Where I need help is figuring out if I should be shooting on an aftermarket app, is there one that is popular for skating?
I should get some strap on lenses for the life of me I do not know why the fish-eye is so popular.

I will find a free / free-ish program to Edit on, and some LUTs or the like to try and get the right "look"

It might not sound like it, but I am pretty excited

I am open to any and all input positive and negitive
Thank you!

Best setup is the one you have. Have fun and get some clips! you'll find out what you like. 4k is good if you want to crop the shot later, otherwise 1080p is great. 60fps is good. Apps aren't really needed. Most people use them to disable the auto steadyshot when using an iphone fisheye so it doesn't shake. If you're just using iphones, keep it easy and simple on yourself, that's the biggest benefit of phone cams. Fisheyes are a staple, but not for self filming. You want them for follow filming with other skaters. Fisheye looks boring on a tripod a lot of the time. Lastly, you don't need 3 phone angles. At all. If you're saying you're still learning to skate and still learning to film, you're way better off using one camera and learning what angles to shoot. If you use 3, you'll spend more time setting up phones than actually filming and skating. 4k isn't overkill, but 3 phone cameras for self filming is overkill. Focus on learning to skate, and learning to film with one camera finding the best angles that you like, you'll progress way faster. That's just my take and hope it helps! Either way go get some clips and have fun

Thanks for the reply

I did a trial run, set up was not too bad, my skating was horrible!
I think the only reason I mentioned using 3 phones is that is simply what I have access to, not that I need all 3 as you pointed out.  I can't remember if the older iPhone Xr will shoot 4k at 60fps natively, but according to Finial Cut Camera, the app will support it, so I tried it and had the worst time with corrupt files and getting them to synch with my iCloud account, so I scrapped that app.

If the weather holds, I might try again on Friday. Maybe I will land something!
