Ave’s new streaming service, Griptape

Maybe if it was 2007, but even then, probably not paying more than a Netflix subscription to access skate videos that I can watch for free or that I already own.

I'd rather just buy a local/indy video. I think I own a video I got in Quebec city that is on a USB-C memory card. And, I still think local videos should sell stickers that have the QR link to the video on the back. Not the same as a DVD, but a cool/cheap physical way to represent the video and make a little money. Who doesn't like stickers?

In the latest Mostly Skateboarding podcast, one of the hosts decided to purchase the 10 bucks a month option to research the product as whole and he said once he got access, there was no content to be seen yet. This is literally ETN all over again, such a grift move from AVE here.

Except etn actually had some cool original content and lined pockets of the skaters. So this is just all the negatives of etn with none of the positives. 

I would imagine most of a griptape subscription would go to paying music royalties instead of paying skaters. Seems like a legal mess that will leave almost nothing on the table for skaters and filmers.

I skipped from page one, so this may have been brought up. I say this because if the concern here is revenue, the only way to address that is by including other boards: for example, snowboarding.

I got paid exactly nothing for this post, the same amount most get for having their parts available for free online.

That's a great question and one he should honestly address. Do the skaters, filmers, editors, graphic designers, audio people involved with the videos receive royalties? If so it's a great idea, and I'd assume that he'd have to pay people to avoid getting sued. Hopefully it generates some revenue for those people if successful, if not it reflects pretty poorly on ave and is disappointing.

Even though I think the app or whatever it is is a dumb idea and probably a waste of time and money, his heart probably was in the right place. It has to suck to see hardest good or whatever random youtube make money off of other people's labor. Same with Mike Mo's thing. Mike Mo did it in a creative way (even though I'll always see it as a grift)

Personally, I think he shouldve done it differently. The model they are trying just doesnt make sense in this day and age

I just don’t see a world in which UMG don’t somehow take the majority of money from any streaming service that wasn’t listed in the licensing agreements obtained when the video was made.

If it wasn’t for music licensing i’d just say the simplest way to allow skaters to make ‘residuals’ off their video parts would be for the companies to allow the skaters to post their parts to their own Youtube channels after a certain grace period. Might even make them work harder. Could work if you just skated to a homies music I guess?

It would’ve saved us all many years of watching shit quality skate parts with bad sound quality or different songs that’s for sure.

great point, more people should skate to their friends music or let their friends score videos. Would create some awesome art + it's mutually beneficial for musician and skater.

also, UMG is pretty evil and music makes up so much of a skate part in terms of feeling for me. Idk how ave could get rights to all of it.

This is the argument for Spotify, and it is provably incorrect. Musicians make less money off of music now than ever before. Spotify (and their corporate partners at Sony, UMG, etc.) make the lion share of subscription money and distribute it to effectively 20 other people. Spotify was touted as a way to save musicians from people torrenting music. Unfortunately, the torrenting population invested their few dollars in musicians directly. Now, that money just goes to streamers and never hits the pockets of musicians.

If this ever even gets of the ground, the money will never get to a single skater who could use it.

fwiw the guy from hardest good came here a few months ago to say he doesn't monetize. I don't really like what he does (I think people should watch the og clips / edits, seems more fair to funnel views on the original platform). But people have been making remixes since forever.
You know memoryscreen puts a lot of work into his edits and I think it serves skate history.

For sure differently... it feels like "app, pay first and content is actually lacking", rather than "ok let's make it fair for everyone, for this and that reason, we're going to do it it that way and here are the rules, use this website and see where it goes".

I'm pretty sure it's doomed from the start, it's not going to be easy with music rights and who deserves what among involved people.

Cole's questions are good, and if it's the case that Spotify's model is not the way to go as mentioned in the conclusion, here is a possibility:

Download parts @$00.69 per video, like a vending machine: revenue from a download goes directly to the people involved.

So, if monthly subscription is @6.90 that's 10 parts/videos that the user has access to for the remainder of their time on the platform: each month they'll get 10 more. Math, baby.

And again, it has to include snowboarding, surfing, and snowskating.
