Alec Beck saved the Court House. Dude worked his ass off for the skate community. It looks like he did it again with the help of Converse, and Traci Park who went to bat for her constituents. If Traci Park saved the spot and prevented a bunch of condos being built, man we all need to be knocking on doors next time she is up for election: https://www.skateboarding.com/news/west-la-courthouse-saved-again

Nike only wanted it for a single day, just like when the X-Games got Philly for a day and it was shut down immediately afterwards. Alec saw the opportunity, worked with the city, and hustled for the community.

Bumping this to remind people to come out this Saturday 7th 11am-2pm for the grand reopening.

Here's Jef Hartsel on the first Courthouse sessions in the '80s:

“The first person that took me to the Courthouse to skate was Tony Alva. Alva was skating that before anybody. That was our regular spot. We would skate there for sunsets. TA lived in an apartment barely a block from there when he got married in the mid ‘80s. Also across the street, the last time I was in LA I went to check it and it was still there on Sepulveda and Santa Monica—but that marble (Eric) Dressen bank was right there too (Sadly gone now —Ed). It was hard to skate. It had a really tall corner. We would hit that and the Courthouse with the Alva crew.”

More history plus Dressen and Castillo interviews in the loooong article:

The first footage is Jesse Neuhaus when he was an Alva am... For 88 back 50 stall kickflip out is like Shane O'Neil level tech... love that Creager photo... his bs flip out on the other side then switch back heel into the fountain in Trilogy is one of my all time favorite clips

Oh wow, didn't expect it to be him. Was probably one of his first trips to California, I imagine.

They weren’t condos it was supposed to be affordable housing for low income, homeless homing projects and seniors. So if the skate spot prevented that from happening that’s actually pretty lame.

Ah, you're right. It did include some affordable housing:
The development proposes 926 housing units, including 431 affordable and moderate-income units (including family, senior, and supportive units) and 495 market-rate apartments.

So based on the footage I saw today the additions look super dumb purely from a practical standpoint. They added hubbas and a rail on the stairs and a bank to the fountain. The run up for the stairs has always kinda sucked since you gotta turn in and dodge cracks and I don’t even get the point of the bank in the fountain. Meanwhile there’s still puddles everywhere and it hasn’t rained in 2 weeks . Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but it just seems like no one addressed any actual issues and instead just threw some stuff in for the sake of making it more skatepark like

They need to let that place die. I’d love to see some new shops or even a Starbucks. It’s 2026 we no longer need Instagram edits from west la court house
