Why don't people skate with gloves on year round?
« on: February 05, 2026, 01:44:18 PM »
A lot of skaters wear gloves in the winter. I'm wondering why more don't in the warmer months too. They would prevent annoying palm gouges. Is it just not hellride enough? Seems like at least fingerless gloves would be good.

Sounds like you probably would need a helmet, elbow, knee pads, and wrist guards too. Throw in some shin guards for extra points.

It's very smple. Skaters have very fragile egos. They wouldn’t want to be seen as uncool by their peers. And any kind of safety gear is seen as uncool.

Also, your hands are THE LAST thing you want to fall on.

Also II, that wallride is sick.

I really wanted a pair of Clawz back in the day but all I could get my hands on was some old batting gloves that I found at a baseball field. I cut the fingers off and wore them skating but my hands got sweaty and they smelled reallg bad so I threw them away. I was pretty happy I didn’t waste my money on some clawz but I probably spent my money on something just as stupid like a beret or Fanny pack.

Rector fingerless gloves are so revered that Deerman, a vegan, wears them year round.

So sweaty. I'm the number one offender at work bc of this. Except in the winter, my hands and feet turn to ice for the season.

I actually skated with gloves a lot during the jump ramp era. Even through the summer, I wore smith fingerless gloves until they basically disintegrated.

They smelled absolutely awful and I wouldn’t want to be around someone wearing them nowadays. Stinky knee pads and such were almost de rigueur back when rector dominated the skateboarding safety gear market.

I don’t think anyone should go through that these days.

I don't know what it is, but gloves and sports always smell horrible. Hockey gloves are the worst. Smith gloves were horrendous. I have a friend who has pair of NOS Rectors (e.g. NEVER used), and I dunno WTF they made those things out of, but Jesus, even an unused pair smells noxious.

I copped those in black:

https://wifa.at/wifa-gloves-protective-ice-skating

Yes, these are women's ice skating gloves but who cares. They are padded at the right places (palm), thin, and even have finger tips allowing scrolling on a touch screen. Just the protection you want without being bulky.

Edit: I don't wear them all year round tho.
why come?

I rock gloves if I'm bombing hills. Firm Grips are less than $5. Having some thin hard plastic on the finger tips and the palm would be nice if I went down and needed to slide out.
