Same or switch up
« on: February 25, 2026, 02:41:47 PM »
Do you tend to stick to the same stuff, or do you switch up a lot?
I am a bit of a mix I guess
I skated almost the exact same setup and shoes for like 15 years and then went absolutely mental in the past 5 or so with the switching
Interested in all components from shoes to pants to hardware

I’ll just say the 15 year setup for me was 8” dlx board on Indy 139 with bones stf and adidas busenitz shoes. I am tempted to go back to that setup (mayb exchange stf for x99)

Since then had every shoe truck and board mfg I could get my hands on

I skate whatever I feel like and am not consistent with any parts, except for the DLX 8.38”/14.5” and the 8.5”/14.25” on my main setups. When I try other decks, I usually end up not liking them, and go back to those DLX shapes.

I like various trucks and wheels for different reasons. Bearings aren’t as noticeable to me unless I go from skating Swiss 6 to Bronson G2s or Shake Junt bearings.

I want everything to be familiar and the same, so their is less variable in learning something new or landing stuff on new spots.

Even still… I feel the tug to try something different that provides something better at something else (while also being something very familiar).

Like… you have your character stats right? There are no characters with all max stats. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses.

But I only have 2 or 3 I’m super familiar with. I’d really like to just have 1 that’s good at everything I value… but that doesn’t exist.

So I pick one, and eventually feel the desire to try the other one. Then try that one, and miss the strengths of the other character.

Hopefully that made sense.

But under no circumstances will I try a new character with a completely different style and control scheme. Hell no. Aint got time for that. I feel like I’m on borrowed time as it is…
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

I'm open to trying different stuff if I feel like it but mostly end up just using the pretty standard 8.5" setup for convenience. Lately I've felt it would be fun to try out different wheels just because I've been using bigger wider wheels for the last few years pretty consistently. I've also felt the desire to try being gear indifferent to counteract all the madness talk that's so prevalent these days and just getting used to whatever I have on.

It's good to have a home base with something that's madness-free.

But I need to switch it up every now and then. Extremes, alternatives. A wide-ass cruiser or a 7.8 tech setup with low trucks. And then back to the usual 8.25–8.5 -ish.

Keeps my brain elastic and nurtures my love for the endless possibilities of skateboarding that are surprisingly easy to forget about every now and then.

I will go through long periods not changing anything and then go from ace to venture and throw my entire world into chaos. I tell myself maybe I need this to fix xyz or whatever and it just makes something else worse. I’m afflicted with more time to think about skating than doing it so I just fall into gear madness.  For example, been out for 4 months after tearing my mcl and last night I ordered thunders.. historically I hate thunders but I’ve convinced myself that the pinch and slightly lower height will help me when I can skate again lol

Rn I’m just switching up everything to find the main trucks and wheel combo I like with a good idea of decks I could switch between
But it might be a while before I find that

I get anxious when I switch from an old bloard to an identical new bloard or from an old Busenitz to a new one, let alone try a new shape or shoe.
why come?

I tend to stick with what I have until I struggle really bad or stop having a good time and then I switch it up.
Switching things up really helped me enjoy different aspects of skating. I used to think an old school heavy ass set up was silly to have but I have a lot of fun riding mine on occasion.

Hardware I used to switch it up every few years or so, but don't see myself changing 8.25s w/ Ventures anytime soon been on it since start of '21. I do like trying new F4 shapes each year tho.

Shoes I have crazy OCD and switch them up all the time, had a small collection before I started skating and now I have a pretty overwhelming half skated pile. Used to skate one pair at a time, but for almost 10 years now I have at least 3 or more in the rotation.

I don’t skate enough flatground to be consistent with flip tricks for it really to matter, so I end up significantly switching it up a lot just to keep it interesting.  Only thing I really can’t do is long wheelbase boards or trucks that push the wheelbase out like Thunder or Ventures (the V8’s were cool - rode them for like a year).  I’ve been on a shaped board kick recently but I think I’ll drop back down to some normal decks this spring.

My brother. I’m this way with Ace/thunder

It’s like the way I used to skate vs the way I’m able to skate.
Thunders bring out the try hard in me and aces remind me to focus on having fun just riding my board.

Keep it the same until I decide to mix it up. If it works, I try to stick with it until something else piques my interest, works better, or has to replace something discontinued.

Variety is the spice of life brother. Outside of a stretch when I was on Indy 159s, conical fulls, and 8.75 shop decks for like 2 years straight, I'm always changing something up between setups.

There's like a range of shit that I can get used to, but I try to stick with the same

I like Indy 144 standards but I would fux with 149s or stg 4 146s, or even 151s/159s

Same with 54mm classics

I might fuck around and throw some lil 50s on there, or some radial fulls

I'd rather keep shit pretty much the same tho, I don't want to get hurt hahah

My muscle memory is just as bad as my actual memory

I remember really enjoying my 10" 1986 Steve Steadham board with pizza tape, 169s, and 64mm g-bones, I could do all my tricks on it still

Trouble is I was 27 then

I'll watch T-Funk, Bannerot, Cody Chapman, etc and decide I need like, radial fulls and at least 149s

So I think it would be helpful to have another setup around, a grass-is-greener type of thing for when I'm feeling like I want something a little different, but still have my main standby board for when I eventually decide "oh, I just suck, ok" again

Cause I can have a blast on whatever and sometimes changing little things keeps it fun

I definitely think that once you have a main setup that's like, simple and easy and you can do whatever on it, keep that one around forever and then have another setup, a mistress setup

Oh, I love switching it up, or rather trying new stuff, but have to have a staple.

Like, in running, or even basketball, I love trying new shoes all the time. But when I know I'll have a hard sesh, pickup or want to "perform", I fall back to the staple. Besides, it hurts the mechanics to change it ALL the time. I try to keep it 60:40 in favor of the staple.

For me it's 8.25 with mid to mellow concave, steep nose, 5.25 Films, 58 full Spits and Busenitzes (the first ones...although 1010s are creeping in there).

Ooh. Tryhard setup and fun setup.

Yes.

Except I got a tryhard setup, and then an exploring/street mission setup that is only mildly different in case I find something worth trying something on.

It’s got same size dragon wheels, and 1/8” wider trucks and deck… but same brand trucks and deck.

So almost the exact same. ::)

Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

Big fan of small switch ups. The try hard and mess around boards is a cool idea.

Usually 8.25 or 8.38 but I'll try out different shapes, lengths, and wheelbases. I ride decks for 4 months usually so I have plenty of time to get used to it. Feel like at or above 32" in length is my happy place. Venture 5.6 v-light is here to stay for a while. Have a hollow axle hangar on standby once this ones finished.

Every month I swap my wheels with one on the shelf just for fun. Spit 52 classic is my homebase but I ride the radial shape in 54 pretty frequently. Next month I'm going to swap in 54mm x97 v1s that haven't gotten enough love. Saving some 103a stf slims for summer time.

Would like to pick up a set of thunder 149/151 standards for a wide setup at some point. Maybe next year.

I've always been of the mindset that if you're lucky enough to find something that works for you, stick with it, and hope the overlords keep making that product the same way. But, if you see a problem with something, and then see that someone else has made a product to try and solve that problem, give that thing a try. You'll have enough gear madness with the latter, so just stabilize the former. If you can figure out your board size, you'll have the energy and money to go insane over bushing shapes and hardness.

Also, there is a razor thin line between stocking up and hoarding, and most of us who think we're stocking up are probably hoarding. Unless you're a pro (or a really talented weekend warrior) you don't need another pair of those shoes you like when you have two additional pairs in boxes, a third pair that are currently assigned to "change of pace / non-skate / weekend use", and the pair you're currently skating still have life left in them. Also, when that other pair you were looking at is secondhand, and the seller hasn't been active on their account since 2023.
RIP Ben Raemers

I used to skate a bunch of different boards and would pick one based on how I was feeling that day, a lot of the time I would bring multiple boards to the park and switch them out as I saw fit. I stopped smoking weed every day a couple years ago and all of a sudden I only wanted to skate one setup. I still have like 12 boards and tons of other skate shit but they just collect dust now

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

The people running Indy are not racist, but pander to the edgelord shitheads who are, and (uneducated) pros who are just nostalgic.

You can choose Aces or Thunder T-IIs if you don’t want to support Indy.
