Childhood "Collectables"
« on: March 03, 2026, 11:25:53 PM »
I'm going through boxes of old shit and pretty much everything I've had in the back of a closest for decades is worth less than the day I bought it.

All those basketball and baseball cards from middle-school are pretty much worthless. I could possibly squeak 100 dollars out of these. Some lame ass marvel comics (and my The Maxx comics) are worthless. And, lol, my old pogs... these aren't coming back into fashion at any point either.

Does anyone else have this shit lying around? Does anyone have anything that could be worth some value at some point?

I wonder what was going on in this era and why so many parents and kids thought their mass produced garbage was going to have value in the future.

if it was me i would take whatever was worth something and sell it and then take the rest of it and either give it away or throw it away.
you would be surprised how good it feels to get rid of old stuff like that.

I found toy collectors that paid a decent amount for my all X-men, TMNT action figures, but could never really find anywhere to sell my old comics.   Ended up being a blessing bc I donated them to one of the charities collecting things for kids after the big CA fires last year

I'm a collector and still have most of my toys and other collections from childhood and beyond. Without getting too deep into it, I mostly have toys and comic books and as a collector at heart, I'm always collecting something. Be it cars, skateboards or whatever. Some of it is worthless on the market, some of it is worth quite a bit but I'm not into selling my collection since that kinda defeats the purpose of collecting to me.

Yooooooo, hyped on that The Maxx reference, loved some Image comics, Pitt was my jam.

Nothing like panning for gold at home. Recently unearthed mad GI Joes I had in Mom's basement. Several bins worth, like 70 action figures with weapons, tons of vehicles. Looked at dedicated sites and the lot looks to be well over a grand, possibly approaching 2 Gs. I plan to sell but seems too good to be true.

Got some Calvin and Hobbs, The Farside Anthologies, and Eastman and Lairds TMNT comics. And Palladium role playing games, basically Dungeons and Dragons in the TMNT Universe. Not sure if valuable. Sold some Garfield books on eBay last year, they are worth fuck all, even the rare ones. I cannot believe how unfunny Garfield is, the rest aged well. Buncha DVDs and VHS, skate and big screen. Almost sold my N64 and games but kept, should probably sell.

was great not having much... made moving a breeze

I kept all my homestar figurines though... which i still have in boxes somewhere

Yeah, the Maxx was a great comic and the anime series based on it was too.

Funny you mention Garfield since I have my whole collection of that too and my daughter really loved reading them. I think she appreciates the sarcasm in it.

I have the complete 2nd series of Garbage Pail Kids. I’m sure series 1 is worth a decent amount because, like most things, it took a while to catch on.

I've kept all my video games since I was a kid.  Some have gone up in value quite a bit, but I don't plan to sell.  I actually enjoy playing the games and hate the collector side of it because they've jacked up all the prices.  Some of my old bicycle parts have also gone up in value because they are getting more and more scarce.

I have an old, well used, Chad Muska Shorty's backpack. I just checked and a mint one is listed for $400 on eBay.  Mine is beat up, but I'd be stoked to even get $150 for it.

timely thread, one of my missions of late has been to get my cd collection together and in doing so have been going through boxes and boxes of shit i have hoarded over the years. the only thing that has gone up in value are band tees and old skate stuff. sorry anakin skywalker still in the package, you are worth less than dirt.

the saddest thing i found in the depths of this junk is an envelope of drawings a girl made for me. i don’t remember when or how i acquired it. it felt imbued with magic, the fact that i even came across it. i felt this weird jolt of pain. brutal, time spanning wistfulness. what the fuck!

Jealous you guys kept stuff. I had a hoarder family member growing up so I was exposed to that kind of thing young and went the exact opposite way. My whole life anytime I’d outgrow something, I’d immediately give it away, sell it, or just throw it away. Always been a bit of a minimalist.

I kinda collected Legos and these little firearm replicas for them called brickarms. I gave away 99% of it to a family friend’s kid. I still have a small box of my favorite mini figures somewhere at my dad’s house that I’ve never had the heart to get rid of. They’re not worth anything.

A while back I was really hurting for cash, trying to think of old shit I could sell. I got inspired by pawn stars (I know that show is fake as fuck) where this dude sold a coin for like a million bucks. And I remembered I actually did collect all the state quarters in this big book with my grandma as a kid. It’s in storage somewhere. So I looked it up and the whole thing only goes for like $14 lol. Id rather keep it for the memories at that price point.

My dad made the mistake of giving me his old football card collection as a kid. I never cared about football and I think he thought it might spark my interest in it or something. Instead my friends and I took my buddies BB gun and did target practice on the cards. That same day I even gave away the remaining cards to a friend. When my dad found out that night he was absolutely furious (rightfully so) so he called my friends dad and got them back. I was such a little shit for that.

There’s this family legend my dad and late grandparents swore about. Apparently my grandpa had a pretty extensive baseball card collection growing up. He had a pristine micky mantle, babe Ruth, etc. All those old time legend cards worth a fortune nowadays. But when they moved to the city when my dad was a kid, the box got lost in the move. Probably a good thing I didn’t end up with them. My dumbass would’ve probably done target practice on a micky mantle card too.

I kept all the skate mags, starting with Sugar magazine in 97, vhs and records I ever bought.
I'm not a collector though, collecting for the sake of it makes no sense to me.

I would double check those baseball cards you have because there could be something rare there in spite of the over printing during that era.
I’ve always been excessively nostalgic so I kept a lot of my shirts, toys, records, tapes, baseball cards etc. Sometimes it pays off to hang on to stuff like cds. Some cds are super out of print and go for a ton. The burden is that all this stuff takes up space but I’m pretty organized even though I’m kind of an obsessive collector.
I did get rid of or destroy some toys when I was a kid and I regret that. I’m slowly replacing them and display them in my cases when I get them. It feels nice to see them all in there.
Also those Maxx comics ruled! Still got mine!

I moved away from home when I was 17 and my mom made me toss everything I couldn’t take with me.

A lot of it was lost in the many moves I made during my college years and then I moved a few times in my active duty service in the navy.

I still have the first cassette my mom ever got for me (Nena, 99 LuftBallons). I have a few Garbage Pail Kids first series cards.

Everything else I have collected has been from the 90’s onwards. Mostly skate videos and video game systems and games. A few Spawn figures I bought from eBay.

Nothing worth anything significant and I’m so happy I don’t collect stuff like jewelry or anything like that. Anyone trying to burglarize my house is going to be bummed at how worthless everything I own is to any pawn shop.

I have so much.

Skate shoes, boards, videos, records & wrestlers. All for the purpose of collecting. I’m about to sell a nice box of records and get some good money for it but it’s just a sliver of what I’m sitting on. The shoes are mostly, if not all, Huf. Gillette/Dylan/Cromer/Sutters.

Boards vary but some Haring AWS boards, Barry McGee Baker, Dylan FA, etc.

Wrestlers… I’m regularly buying. I love it. Just got some AJ Styles figures that just came out. Plus the new Penta figure. Just a great time. I’m on another forum & I will say goodness, what a bunch of clowns on there…..

Videos. I debate selling the whole thing; Cherry/Inhabitants/Mindfield/$lave, etc.

I have a bunch of 90s baseball cards that are probably worth nothing now. I was a huge Jose Canseco fan as a kid and begged my mom to buy his rookie card for my birthday for $100, which was pretty big money back then for a kid. She actually got it. It came in a really thick plastic holder that screwed shut at the corners. Pretty ridiculous looking back on it.

Other than that I have skate VHS and DVDs and some decks. I don't collect stuff because I don't want to have too much stuff lying around.

I’d probably re-collect them and OG Transformers figures if I had space to display them.

Mighty Morphin Power Ranger action figures
Pogs
Pokemon cards (first-gen)

I gave the majority of my Pokemon cards away, don’t know what happened to the Pogs, and my parents donated the Power Rangers.

These days, I collect wheels, because it doesn’t take much space, and I have enough softgoods. If I didn’t buy another set, I would still have enough to skate until I die.

Fuckin' pogs!  Tossed mine last fall.

Still got my Reggie Jackson rookie card and a few others that have some value.  I got one with Babe Ruth, and I think Micky Mantle, together, choking up on a bat at an All-Star game or Home Run Derby.  I haven't put eyes on it for ages, so not super sure if it's Micky or not.

Can't forget my Pee Wee Herman doll haha.

When I was kid had pretty good Pokémon card collection, my dad always gave me grief for spending money on Pokémon then one day we were cleaning out my grandmas garage and I found his old baseball card collection which was a big box full of dozens of folders with mint cards etc and he got mad at me for even touching them blabbering about how rare and value they are, hypocrite!

I collect pretty much anything and have my entire life. Recently I’ve started getting into collecting knives, preferably fold action pocket knives.

As far as childhood collectibles, I used to have a ton of sports cards and they’ve all dwindled down to a small briefcase that used to contain a poker set. Some of the favorites I have that are worth less now than they were to manufacture…Nothing crazy just a few rookie cards of 80’s-90’s stars, Ken Griffey Jr, Eddie George, etc

The craziest collection I’ve ever seen was when I worked for a pest control company. This dude was loaded to the point where he had an indoor gym and a basketball court, a movie theater, and a game room full of arcade machines. In the basement, there were 3 rooms full of mint to near mint golden era baseball cards from anyone you could imagine. Some of the ones I remember clearly were a Bowman Willie Mays rookie,
Topps Mickey Mantle, and like 5 or 6 Jackie Robinson cards. Dude had every single card enclosed in this thick ass glass, a lot of them were PSA graded, he took it very seriously.

When I was nearing the end of high school I made it my mission to reacquire all my PlayStation 2 collection that I had sold to GameStop years ago. Now like 15 years later I’ve got that and then some.

I’m big on collecting physical media as well. Have a decent amount of records, probably close to 1000, not a large number at all compared to other collectors I’ve met but the average person thinks 1000 records is a lot (and nowadays seem to think it’s worth a lot of money; little do they know a lot of my records are bargain bin jazz & good stuff I bought back in 2011-12 when no one cared about vinyl). I’d say most of my records are worth nothing, but they’re cool to look at and listen to

Another piece of music media I’ve started to collect that’s worth even less than records nowadays is cassettes. I used to have a decent tape collection when I had an older truck with a tape deck, but I gave them away to a friend when I got the car I have now. Regret that one for sure because I had some good tapes there.

Have way too many VHS and DVDs, I had so many VHS at one point that I gave damn near 4 boxes of tapes away to one of my collector friends. Still have around 200 tapes after the fact. DVDs altogether probably close to 750-800. I have to get a storage unit here soon and turn the 2nd bedroom into a baby room just because I have so much useless shit that I don’t need but can’t get rid of

Back to childhood collections though, one thing I was obsessed with collecting as a kid was wrestling action figures. I had so many back then that I had my own universe mode, had rosters, ppvs, the whole 9. I even had the announcer table with Jim Ross & used to announce in his voice, and had the little titantron entrance ramp that played the wrestler’s music when the strip on their foot hit the magnet. I sold all of them at a yard sale when I was 12 or 13 (I don’t really regret, they lose all value once they’re used)

I’ve bought a few WWE figures here and there to display but they’re in a box in storage nowadays.
