I just wish he saw this response. Marc was truly beloved by almost anyone who has watched him and stepped on a useless wooden toy. Absolutely no one wanted this end result. May his soul rest in peace. He was an inspiration to other legends, he was an inspiration to people who were hyped on the one kick flip they landed. This is by far the hardest I’ve felt about an skateboarding related death.

It says a lot that essentially every sponsored skater that was remotely active in the last 35 years feels impacted and reflective of the effect he had. His style, attention to detail, and full embrace of life influenced everyone. Literally. You can't say that about all that many people.

Beautiful tribute. I am somewhat surprised to see mention of CTE there, though he has doubtless hit his head a few times over the years. And did he do that portrait of the Gonz and the shoes drawing? I've been looking for art that he made, besides his parts. Would love to see more paintings he did.

I asked him about this smoking monkey painting years ago and he said he painted it in 1999 and eventually gave it to a photographer/skater friend

Damn. Recopying this to page 19 for those without IG and added a few of pics you might not have seen before...

No amount of mental preparation could have prepared me for the pain I feel over Marc’s passing. I feared this day for many years. In a way, I’m relieved that his suffering is over.

He was the sweetest, most complicated person I have ever known. My time with Marc was a blessing. I can honestly say I loved him more than he was capable of loving himself. I did everything in my power to help him see his brilliance and worth.

Our relationship was otherworldly and defied logic. We often joked that his brain was jazz and mine was math.

My only wish is that his sweet soul is finally free from pain.

Marc was a genius, on and off the board. I’ve often heard people say he was the Van Gogh of skateboarding, I believe that to be true. For better or worse, he felt everything deeply. He struggled to let go of old narratives and carried an immense amount of guilt related to Avery.

In the end, he struggled to manage the responsibilities of day to day life. Perhaps he hit his head one too many times…. perhaps it was a dangerous combination of mental illness and addiction? I don’t know. What I do know is that he suffered.

For those who feel they were conned out of money by Marc, I think it’s important to set the record straight. Marc was morally scrupulous and genuinely humbled that people in skateboarding still gave a f**k about him. He felt rejected by the world he had given everything to. He wasn’t able to fulfill orders because of his deteriorating mental capacity, not because he intended to deceive anyone.

I will forever be grateful for his love and for the way he showed up for Cairo.

I love you, Marc. I look forward to seeing you in my dreams. ✨

Rest in peace, #222🕊️❤️

Lots of clips and interviews I've never seen before. Probably so much unreleased stuff too...that front board up that triangle ledge in the Nike Cortez is too sick.

When I first started dating my wife I was constantly putting skate videos on the tv because she didn't know what to watch that wasn't Maury/To Catch a Predator just because she needed something in the background.

She's pretty artsy so she can gauge if something speaks to her taste within seconds. As soon as I started running through all of MJ's parts she was down for his music taste and by the time we got to his Seven Steps to Heaven part she was a huge fan and analyzing every trick and asking me if so and so trick was difficult or was it just cool looking.

I told her the news as soon as it broke and she said she hasn't felt her stomach drop like that since Peter Steele passed. My wife, who has zero interest in the act of skateboarding outside of watching it with me, was actually devastated. Our man transcended just skating and turned it into a visual art form. I don't think I've still fully processed what a loss this is.

favorite part. He was magic. Literal magic. I can’t help but be sad. Marc!!! Wherever you are you brought a light to my life that I didn’t know I needed. At least you can provide that to the people on the other side now.

Man, I used to watch that part all the time.

It's so funny how only now I realize how big his impact was on my life and especially on my skating. The tricks, the mindset (for better or worse) and the outfits. Me and my friend would proudly wear a "Marc Johnson sweater." The influence isn't so in-your-face as say a major Tom Penny fan would be, but it's extremely subtle, so much so that you don't even notice it.

His splash of influence is so immense that on the other side of the globe, if you pay attention, you can feel the little ripples.

I cried a lot this wednesday. Not when I was watching, reading and listening to everything again; but only every time I had to utter the words or the thought: "Marc Johnson has passed away." It's still hard to believe.

I was out skating earlier this week and didn't know any of this happened, and I was having mini revelations/dubious makes of some tricks I've been working on forever, and it felt great. I'm choosing to believe it wasn't a cosmic coincidence cause it makes me smile to think of it that way.

A good time to reevaluate your feuds and the former friends you don’t talk to anymore due to a squabble. Only you can decide whether to let the past go but it’s worth thinking deeply about.

there's like 4 clips of him smacking his head in fully flared alone. i wouldn't be surprised if the head trauma from slamming resulted in CTE. symptoms of CTE can take years, decades to show and later in life can manifest as dementia. the parts about his inability keep up with responsibilities of day to day life, his deteriorating mental capacity kinda hints at that. i also think about the "kindling" effect of alcoholism, how the cycle of bender -> withdrawal -> sobriety can cause the onset of withdrawal symptoms to come much quicker and more severely with every relapse. i don't know if he relapsed, but he's spoken a lot about his struggles with drinking and withdrawals before. i don't mean to speculate on his death, but it's just so depressing how tragically it ended for him. it's been said a lot that he "gave his all" for skateboarding, and it bears repeating. he sacrificed so much for it.

I’m going to guess it’s the name of that little kid who’s hair he’s cutting in one of her photos and just a massive coincidence that it’s also a pro skater’s unique name/nickname

I've been asking @KyleCamarillo for years to post the lost MJ part where he skates to Chemical Brothers. I know it's mostly footage we've already seen, but maybe now's the time?

Can I just add that it's pretty fucking cool seeing dudes talking openly about their emotions here? It's really a welcome change.
