didn't MJ say he filmed those Tricks on a Sunday 3-4 days prior to the premier of Away Days. If so, how could he have known? I don't think MJ would have expected his footage to be in there since the project was already ongoing for 3 years.

Crail wasn't paying him for 5-6 months--yet we expected him to be honest and fully transparent? at that point, he didn't owe Carroll any explanations.  According to interviews, he did disclose that he was leaving for Adidas, but Crail wanted him to wait said 5-6months (without pay).....in his shoes (no pun intended), i would have done the same. And sometimes, its easier to just not say anything. Perhaps it was a struggle for MJ to say "Sorry Mike, I don't have time to wait, i gotta go. Bills need to get paid. The IRS is on my ass for back taxes that i neglected because I was on Tour filming for Fully Flared"..

Marc getting kicked off Chocolate is whatever, crail was at a low point and they were probably tired of each other’s shit anyways.

The Jenkem character assassination and the implied blacklisting Marc got afterwards is some gross bullshit tho.

But, this isn’t the thread for that tbh.

Even though I’ve been following this thread since the beginning I can’t remember if this was posted before.
He really was such a great story teller and I wish there would have been more stuff like this.
But that ”thank you for still caring about me” made my chest squeeze…

I don’t often post anywhere but the all of the positive vibrations of this thread (excluding the negatives) inspired me to share. Marc is one of my all time favorites as well. The news of his passing broke me, similar to when I learned of Grosso’s passing.

I’m a middle school art teacher in MA and run a skateboard club. On Friday, I spent the first 20 mins talking to the kids about MJ, his contribution to skateboarding, his struggles with substance abuse and depression, and encouraging them to access their support structures if they start feeling ways that could bring them harm. The group of 4th through 8th graders were fully engaged, and respected the moments of silence we held for MJ. After watching his fully flared part, we went skating. Earlier in the day I made them stickers, later this summer I’ll screen some shirts. (See below for images. And this is not promotion - I make shirts and stickers and give them away to support what I believe in.)

MJ will be missed forever, and in some small way I’ll do what I can to ensure his legacy stays gold.

There arent some interviews that Marc talk about how big corp shoes ruinned skateboarding? I wonder if he did right choices with  health checks that adidas gave to him.

In his ex partner homage she said he was into substances, I guess it was not only alchool.

Peaple saying the skateboard game canceled him after crail beef is a fucking lie, dude was able to join many brands as possible...I could see him on kroocked, Jacuzzi or Jerry Hsu brand, even back to Enjoy. Dude was a supertalented and productive skater, any brand could wish him on.

I think, If Carroll just kept this behind the scenes, it could be much worse for Marc, as it would just be gossip and rumors inside  the game. In my experience if it happens things getting worse for the skater.

I dont blame Marc or Carroll for nothing, that was two grown ass man business, people who does it are fried.

Allen.

Youve turned a death thread of a legend into being partially about him, further associating the two forever and thats your own guys fault.

Haha.  Even in the most lame retrospectives of skateboarding history Bink wont be mentioned and certainly there isnt a single person that associates bink with Marc.

Its also pretty great that you dont understand what hate follows are.  The followers went up when the account was private because people wanted to watch the drama. That instagram account is a LolCow at this point.

Don't have ig or would be happy to help.

Can you screenshot the image and save it, then click add image to post (to the left of the post icon) and select "browse from your device", afterwards select the screenshot

Would also love one of those stickers. Great work!!!

"i first met Marc Johnson through a project we worked on together, work chats quickly turned into chats about the uncertainty of working within the subculture of skateboarding. Along the way, Marc mentioned that he had dealt with some tax drama early in his skateboarding career. I shared that i was currently in some pretty heavy tax trouble from several years of pay and life just not adding up. The next day i got a fedex package with a copy of the TAO TE CHINH that had a post-it note on the cover that read “YOGA, BRO”. Shockingly, inside the pages was enough cold hard cash to cover my debt and get me in the clear with the IRS. We were essentially just acquaintances through work at that point - a true testament to what a selflessly generous and caring person he was to anyone around him. Thankfully Marc and i continued to work on random projects over the years, unfortunately most of them never seeing the light of day. Here are a few examples…

Love / Miss you Marc. RIP. 💖" - Todd Bratrud

The Nine Club gets some hate here but I thought that MJ tribute was very cool. Crob was definitely in contact with MJ and Avery, and that Crob has been through some really tough shit as well lately ...

Cool heartfelt MJ stories and despite being still on girl/chocolate they didn't give a damn about what Carroll thought, and did it anyway.

Also, I think it's very telling that quite a lot of old crail riders: Tony, Chico, York, Eldridge etc. were all so positive about Marc

I never met Marc. I live on the other side of the world. I started skating when I was 7 or 8 but I was 19 when I bought my second ever video (skate videos were hard to get here - in the old days before the internet), Modus Operandi. MJ's few words and his part changed how I saw and understood skateboarding.

'You can take something that is pure thought, and make it reality.'

The way MJ spoke about skateboarding, the way he moved, his trick selection, his lines - It opened me to seeing skateboarding completely differently. With this new perspective and inspiration for skateboarding, I was able to step away from some heavy drug use and trade it for my new drug, skateboarding.

Probably like most of you, I consumed every video and magazine I could lay my hands on but any MJ part, interview, photo or trick in a montage were pure gold.

When he started Enjoi, it was the antidote for a sickness skateboarding was experiencing; a sickness where everyone was becoming a carbon copy of each other. Same style, same tricks, same clothes. Tilt Mode and Enjoi shook skating out of its disease and gave it new direction. At the time I was running a skate store and would flick through every new release of transworld to find that month's Enjoi ad for the hilarious satire of skating and the industry. MJ was not only an incredible skateboarder but was the industry's trickster that would make skateboarding take a good look at itself. He lead the way to better places. The tilt mode videos made skateboarding shake itself off and start being creative again.

I think it was 'Hot Chocolate' where he said;

'If you can think of something, you can do it. Skateboarding is ideas put into action ... you can do any trick you want, if you try it for long enough... your body is only doing what your mind is telling it to do.'

We have all learnt the hard lesson from skateboarding that if you want to do something, it only depends on how much pain you're willing to tolerate but MJ's words hit me deep. Shortly after, I travelled Europe skateboarding and on returning moved to a new city and started a new life path. He made me realise that if I wanted to do something I just had to persist with trying it long enough.

When Fully Flared was released I realised my days of keeping up with skateboardings progression was over. MJ moved things so far forward and it was too big of a leap for me to try to follow and emulate. We all know that MJ gave his body, mind and soul to that part and went to a place that I don't think he ever quite fully returned from - fully flared indeed.

Pretty Sweet - to me - is his best part. The power, speed and finesse with that unmistakable MJ silhouette, whilst showing he could do anything. (Just think of the fs 180, fakie 5.O to fakie tre line at mach ten!) MJ was not just one of the best skateboarders we have ever seen, he was not just a trickster and a leader of skateboarding as a creative act, he was an artist. No argument. No discussion. He made skateboarding an art form.

I don't know what was going on in his mind or his life but I can't shake this tragically sad feeling that MJ was an artist that gave all of himself to his craft, he embodied the spirit of skateboarding and the collective entity of skateboarding wasn't there to hold him when he needed it (I am not pointing fingers to any certain people or any company or even the industry)

MJ's death has broken my heart and the soul and spirit of skateboarding has gone with him. I have seen skateboarding change dramatically since I was a kid but with MJ gone, all that is left is a simulation that serves a mindless machine seeking profit from the next product.

I remember when I listened to the 'basement tapes' interview and he talked about wanting to help people and change their lives - I really wanted to be able to tell him that he already has and does!

I am not one for heroes of fanning out over famous people - quite the opposite - but I looked up to MJ, he inspired me. I never met him and my life feels more empty with him gone -  I am a grown ass man and I have cried everyday since Wednesday. Damn it, I didn't cry this much when my dad died! The deep intrinsic unfairness of life - that someone that shone so bright, suffered so much.

MJ's words, his thoughtful and sharp opinions, the way he approached skateboarding, his creativity and style - affected and inspired me much more deeply than just skateboarding, he changed the way I met my life, and showed me that anything I want to achieve is only limited by how long I'm willing to attempt it for.

Sorry if this is a bit deep - I just had to put this somewhere.

Thank you Marc.

When Grosso passed, didn’t Vans release or rebrand a shoe as the Grosso Mid and direct a portion of the proceeds to his son and family?

Maybe this is a naive idea (and I’m sure I’m not the first to express it), but it would be great to see the Nidecker Group rebrand the Emerica OG-1 back to the MJ-1 and share a portion of the proceeds with MJ’s estate.

I have no idea what kind of numbers that shoe does these days, but even as a symbolic gesture, it feels like MJ’s impact on skateboarding, and on Emerica in particular, deserves that kind of recognition.

I remember at some point when MJ was a free agent Louie said something along the lines of enjoi always being a home for him, would be pretty awesome if they did some reissues of his graphics and the contributions go to his family.

This is so awesome! Stickers are perfect!

I remember at some point when MJ was a free agent Louie said something along the lines of enjoi always being a home for him, would be pretty awesome if they did some reissues of his graphics and the contributions go to his family.
i've heard from multiple sources the last week that MJ was getting involved with the enjoi reboot and he was supposed to have a welcome ad in the next thrasher. fucking gutting.

Well then. I don't ever dip my toes into the kiddie pool.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

I rode for DVS during the podium times. Was supposed to be one of the euro dudes with Paul Shier, Frank Barraterio and a few others, but it never manifested as a euro team so was under contract as regular AM instead. During this time I also ended my board sponsor, and didn't have a clothing sponsor, while starting to look into finding an more personal identity in clothing outside sponsor clothes and figuring out what I was actually into.

Since Im Scandinavian I had the scandi fashion influence, while still having a foot an skateboarding and tried to mesh it. Marc was such a good inspiration to bridge that for me, and I wanted to emulate it soo bad. That led me to ask Gavin, which was my contact during a period where DVS didn't have a team manager, if I could order some Matix stuff - which was fine and it became routine to order Matix suff with my regular order, each month for a good 2-3 years.

It was all inspired by Marc, the sweaters, the Marc pants. Anything he wore, I pretend to believe it would fit me as well. Ive never really thought in the later years how much influence he had on my personal growth, it kinda hit me hard these last days. Like knitted sweaters - still to this day. There obviously been tons of skaters trough different periods of times that have had influence, but it was different with Marc since I had this vault of things to pick directly on what Marc wore and in such a changing time for me. I still must have a tons of Matix catalogues and pre-sale material somewhere where I use to mark what I wanted. Always Marcs fits.

I got to skate a few times with both Jerry and Louie, and other in the Crail camp like Jereme and Jeron, but never got to meet Marc. After reading all stories, I feel gutted I didnt have a chance to.

Sorry for the ramble, just trying to make sense of the feelings of loss for someone I never got to meet.

didn't MJ say he filmed those Tricks on a Sunday 3-4 days prior to the premier of Away Days.

Of all pros gone, this one feels most surreal (Except Lewis, but he was a friend so hit me on another level) - its really hard to come to terms with MJ passing, especially with how the industry shunned him and how things escalated. So damn tragic.

Now this is the kind of tribute Marc deserves and would likely appreciate.  8)
