Learning new stuff is cool. Skating only because your parents enroll you in an expensive skate class as daycare and this daycare makes skateboarding at the park impossible for everyone else - that isn‘t cool.

How much do you get paid for teaching kids how to skate?

But Whatever, maybe you read what others post?

You’re right, I don’t read every post sometimes.
It’s just a discussion. All I meant was so, unless skate classes and businesses in general get made illegal, none of us can control what people do. Fact.

Therefore, if one can’t stop skate classes one has three choices.

One could ignore and never speak to anyone that has ever attended such a class
One could go further down that road and actively attack and discourage people from attending these classes
Or once could relax and not stress about what they cannot control and attempt to in a small way offer guidance and share stories with younger people as was the way most of us were treated

Most kids are weird and can do kooky stuff who cares at least they’re playing in the street and not playing Fortnite and getting fat

In fact no attendees of skate classes in my city have ever contributed to getting a skatepark built. The park I was trying to skate took two years of lobbying and politics to get built. Entirely done for free by older people like me.

Enjoy your time without wife, work or kids. I miss having endless amounts of time and energy. And yes, it‘s not the end of the world. I ended up skating on the basketball court next to the skatepark.

I have a wife and kids. My kids don’t go to the skatepark cuz I taught them the streets.
I personally don’t fuck with them so neither do my sons. Those ain’t my kids you mad at but they is kids and if one of them love skateboarding then how the fuck would you even know if all you see is the ones that don’t ? Your negative point of view make you see shit that isn’t real. Like how you think I don’t have kids and make money off skateboarding? You made that’s shit up cuz I called you out for being weird dawg.

This is not an issue of "gatekeeping" skateboarding because we're talking about people using public spaces for private businesses. If these were free classes open to the public, that's a different story.

My skate friend ran a class for the township in the spring/summer on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8-10 AM and 10-12 AM. No problem. Except when it got rained out and then classes were scheduled whenever. That was annoying when I showed up after work and there was a lesson.

The other consequence was the park was by a police station so the cops started buzzing around and would write $100 tickets for not wearing a helmet. So, I had to skate for years with a helmet on. They would also lock the park up if multiple kids were caught w/o a helmet as punishment.

Nothing good comes with parents being involved in their kids activities (parent of a 17 and 13 y.o.).

Yea but then they gotta ban tai chi and park run and dog walking, fucken heaps of shit

Using public spaces to conduct business is a good hustle for a lot of people that don’t make enough money to rent a shop and write it off on tax

Oi sorry that was spastic those things are free LOL

Most people would not say:

"Tennis players who don't want private classes hogging the city's courts are gatekeeping tennis."

"Fishers who don't want private fishing classes taking up the local pond are gatekeeping fishing."

I get you don't want to be the crazy boomer Karen of skateboarding, so you're overcorrecting to be the good guy. But private skate classes at the city-funded park are a major contradiction. In a way, private skate classes are gatekeeping skating for the privileged kids who get to take them.

I remember in 98/99 Ronnie Bertino had business cards for lessons at my local in lake forest.   I DMed him about it recently and he said he never had cards there, but Kastel was kinda cool at my junior high at the time so I knew his name from that and it was one of the first pro names I knew.   Willy Santos was the first because his birdhouse shirts were pretty popular too

Do any of you guys even skate before there was skateparks everywhere? They made them skate parks for the kids. Not no boomer over correction shit big breh. All those skate parks you guys got now made you guys forget your roots . Let the kids be. And yeah dawg I know it’s weird but that’s just how it be if you live long enough. New rules apply
